Several years ago Rosco picked up something at a show and passed it to the others. The result was projectile vomiting and extreme diarhea. Sad
By late Saturday we had called our(no longer) vet and his response was bring them in Monday. By midnight we were frightened because we had 4 very sick dogs and no idea what to do. I called an ER vet place, they told us to come right in because it sounded like parvo. By 1am we had covered the truck in blankets and loaded them up. When we arrived the vet tech took blood, etc. and asked if we could wait outside with the dogs because they would make a mess! We waited with them in the truck for 2 hours then they finally let us back into a room. The dogs looked pitiful as you can imagine and my husband and I were wrecks. The room we were in was just in front of the lab and I heard someone say "this one is positive for Parvo" and I got hysterical. Finally the vet came in and said our dogs had tested negative for parvo and told us they just had a bug. We had to buy a case of very pricey food, our total bill was 1147.00.
After all that we still had the problem, the meds had no affect and we still didn't know what to do. Somehow my husband found an old country vet who told us right off the bat they had giardia and were passing it back and forth, they certainly didn't need meds or special food(his bill 30.00)
I had recently seen something about a giardia vaccine and had our new vet order it from Michigan State. They each received 1 shot with a booster 2 weeks later and we have never had a problem since. Each shot cost only 16.00. I don't know why the ER vet didn't know what he was looking at but it sure made me angry. Mad
I've never heard of a vaccine for a single celled animal ... protozoan

Giardia lamblia (intestinalis) is a single celled animal, i.e., a protozoa, that moves with the aid of five flagella.

There is more info about it here: http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~mow/chap22.html

There are several medical treatments available, a more detailed site specifically about giardia in dogs can be found here :

As far as my information goes it was developed at Michigan State. When I called there to inquire they told me to have my vet call them directly and they would send it out. I'm not sure if vaccine is the proper word, whatever it was worked like a charm. I did see an ad in Dog Fancy or Dog World several years ago and think that's where I remembered it from.
