puppy coat or adult coat..how can you tell?

Does anyone know when the puppy coat is gone and the adult coat is in? Lucky's hair is all gray where it used to be black with the exception of his ears...they are still black. He was 7 months old Nov12th....
Oh and he is shedding quite a bit. But the hair that I find in the house is white not gry or black  Any ideas?

Puppy uglies are called coat transitions in the sheepie world and yes sheepies have two puppy uglies. One from puppy to junior coat and then another from junior to adult coat. Happens at slightly different ages depending on the dog.

When does this happen? I know each dog is different, but is there a time that it likely happens?
Tonks and Luna are 2 years old, and still doing thier coat transition. My understanding is that they will go through several before hitting the adult coat.
You'll know when the coat starts changing... suddenly your dog will be covered in mats every day.

though I will say that my girls didn't seem to lose any hair. So I'm not sure what that may be.
The hair is always after he gets groomed. Your dogs have never shed hair? Not even after grooming or when they started transitioning their coat? Maybe becasue it is so hot here....I don't know. The groomer says his coat is very thick. To me it feels very soft but she said she's groomed 2 other sheep dogs and Lucky's is thick in comparison. WOnder what it is going to be like when he gets his adult coat then.
How often do you brush him yourself? It sounds like he is leaving parts of his undercoat on the floor ( :) maybe you can remove some of it with an undercoat rake to minimize the shedding? I am stumped - my girl does this, but only when she is coming into season.

As for the coat change it is different in different lines and your breeder could tell you best ewhat to expect and when.

It takes most (?) of the dogs until they are almost three to get their final adult coat. they will still have darker patches if they have had an injury, even sometiems bug bites.

My girl is four and the dark hair on her face is darker than that on her body. My boy is also four and all his dark hair is darker than hers.
Wendel will be 4 January 1st and he has a lovely, plush, coarse coat. It's the easiest of the two to keep groomed owing to all the guard hair he has. His coat is a blue/grey and will always be dark.

Asterisk is only 1 1/2 and has a snowy white grey coat. She still has two black patches at both her elbows but the rest is very, very light. I can feel some guard hairs beginning to grow along her spine but the rest is very soft. She matts often owing to this. Her mother had a very soft coat and her father a coarse one, so I'm hoping she will inherit her father's coarseness.

I think you still have awhile to go. Just remember, you can always keep Lucky kept shorter in the warmer months, this will help you through the coat changes.

I hate to admit, but I haven't really brushed him yet  He has been getting groomed every week (Thursdays) since he is 2 months old. Apparently doing that was a great idea because the groomers say he is so easy to grrom and doesn't seem to mind it at all. i do plan to start grooming myself. I got a TON of information here on what I need to go about it. I just cut my groomer back to every other week while I start brushing and bathing myself. He was groomed last Thusday so Thanksgiving is the first week he'll miss. I will brush him tomorrow and probably again Sunday, then the groomer comes again theat Thursday. His coat is short right now. She used an "E" blade on him. I don't know what that means or how long that is supposed to be. She said it is longer than the #3 3/4 , but he sure looks short to me. I definitely wouldn't be able to line brush him properly, but do plan to just to go through the format of it just to get him used to it.
I have mohogany wood floors so they are dark.....3 days after I vacuum I can start seeing those white hairs on the floor. They are like my Bichons hair....not shedding like a German shepard, more like a small puff of hair ball.

So does he have an undercoat now? I thought the undercoat was when the get their adult coat. OR is the top coat when they get the adult coat. I'm so confused.
All mammals - including us - lose hair every day. The average human being loses between 50 and 100 strands - imagine what the average OES looses!!!

No big deal, but run a brush thorugh the hair daily or every other day and mor ewill come out there than on the floors. But I vaccuum constantly - of course I also have a Newf and an Irsh setter and they do shed.

I absolutely hear that. I vacuum every other day becasue if I wait for the 3rd day I see hair and I hate that. Sometimes even every day if they are out a lot....sandy paws means sandy floors
Glad to see another 'Lucky' owner with so many questions as well.
