Vaccinations

I've been very concerned about vaccinations and I read everything that comes to the forum. The last time I gave Ellie and Buff DPP was 1 1/2 years ago.

Here's my quandary. My vet is telling me they now recommend DPP every three years like rabies. He also recommends that Rabies and DPP be given at least one year apart. I don't do Lepto and Bordadello (sp?) only when they have to be boarded which isn't often.

Ellie turns 7 in January and I was going to make this the last year she receives the DPP.

My question to the forum is; how many people follow the 3 year vaccination protocol and how many people don't vaccinate other than rabies after the initial shots?

If you don't vaccinate how do you deal with boarding etc?

I didn't vote because your choice don't cover our protocal. I give three year rabies as required by law, and I do titers for other vaccinations. My four y/os have not needed shots (other than rabies and lyme) sinc ethier one year shots.

I also alternate and do titers for one int ehSpring and the other in the fall. I always suspect if one shows a low titer I would test the other .
We try to balance their need for protection from horrible illnesses with keeping their immune systems as strong as possible. Only rabies vaccinations here after the initial puppy shots, then titers. It also depends on what conditions are prevalent in your area.

Bumble was due for his annual vaccinations this fall. He's close to 18 months now. He did have his 3 year rabies but we titered for everything else. His levels were adequate except for lepto because we don't vaccinate for it. There haven't been any cases of Lepto here and we don't visit dog parks or places where they'll be in contact with standing water... we try to prevent habitat for vermin in the yard too.

The older dogs haven't been vaccinated for about 5 years now. Some boarding facilities may wave vaccination if you have proof of titer levels.
I used to vaccinate my dogs annually until I learned
a bit more about it.
I used to vaccinate for kennel cough every 6 months
due to having so many foster dogs coming in BUT,
my dogs actually got kennel cough more often when being vaccinated :?:

Our Georgie girl who will be 1y/o this Saturday came from a vet
who actually gave her a 3 year Rabies and 3 year DPV.

I really freaked last summer when I brought in a litter
of terrier fosters that had poss parvo.
I certainly used alot of bleach and kept them isolated but,
all of our dogs did fine... :phew:
I talked to the vet when this happened and he said as long as
they went through the puppy series they should be fine!
Needless to say, that won't happen again!

I know Rabies is required by law and we do it but, when I did
Quin's last summer, a month later his lymph nodes were swollen.
He died from Lymphoma and I can't say it is related but, I wonder...

Good luck!
I know there is such a fine line!
My girls are still young, and I was told that I had to do the boosters at one year, after their puppy shots. But my vat said that after that, we can do the titers test to see what they need. And my kennel and my doggie day care will both accept the titers results in replacement of vaccination records.
I have to get rabies and since we board our dogs... generally have to get bordetella. Our new boarding and grooming place require you be up to date on ALL shots so now we have to get anything offered here. If it were by choice, I wouldn't get them.

Depending on the facility they will accept titers as well - I have used them to board the dogs.
I'll have to look into that. Thank you for telling me. I'm sure many of these ol country folks don't know what that is and will just say no ...just cause ...but I will at least try.
I do puppy shots then once every three years.
I only give the basic 4 though and rabies, no lepto, no bordatella etc...
Rabies vax by law, the others I keep avoiding tho the vet keeps pushing. If I send the dogs with DH to vet, they'll come back vaxed, so I make sure I'm the lead partner there.

We have enough wildlife around I'd probably keep the rabies vax going anyway. The others.......I just don't see the need. They don't go to dog parks, play areas or doggy day care.

I thought I was the only one with that problem

and that's our house too.
Although our vet doesn't push them. He just asks and Todd says yes.

Geez, I'm glad this topic came up. I'm going to pin a note, NO VACCINATIONS to Michaels shirt the next time he takes anyone to the vet. 8O
i gave him a note and he still came back with vax (on his own dog) maybe I should have pinne it to his shirt for the vet to see :)
My dog is 7 months old now and he had the required shots. I hate when it's time for shots. I get nervous with both my dogs and my kids, but the all seem fine having had them. :D
