Always double check

DH has had a chest infection that he cant shake. Not pneumonia but quite bad. His doctor prescribed antibiotics with a repeat course.

He took the prescription to the mall to get the repeat filled and the lady at the counter said it would be 10 mins so did he want to do any other shopping. When he went back the same lady got his meds and took his credit card for payment.

He came home and left the meds on the kitchen counter. I looked at the box and asked did the doctor prescribe different antibiotics if the first course didnt help?

DH looked at me like "what the hell are you talking about?"

Well its a different drug name and only once a day not 3 times.
There was another repeat prescription. I looked at that..............yep a different name.

DH had cholesterol lowering meds and a prescription with another man's name, address and medicare number on it.

The lady at the counter was a student and didnt follow the correct procedure re checking that she was giving the right meds to the right person.

Thank goodness I'm a curious, sticky beak. DH admits he would have just started taking the meds 3 times a day without realising that they were different. 8O

It pays to check this stuff, it could have been a disaster.

Thank goodness you're on the ball!

I always check the labels as well as the appearence of the pills themselves for fear that the pharmacy technician (high school kids usually) just grabbed the wrong bottle.

Anytime the pharmacy dispenses a pill by a different manufacturer than your last prescription of the same medicine, they notify the customer that the color and or shape of the pill may have changed but it is the same medicine. I generally go online and look up the pill to ensure it is the right stuff.

On new prescriptions, I also ask the pharmacist to include the
package insert so I can see it for myself, and read about all of the nasty potential side effects that might arise.

My favorite one so far was called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. It causes all of your skin to die and fall off. I haven't started taking that prescription yet.
Good catch mim :D
Good one.

It always pays to double check!

...Todd would have had no clue either - just started taking it....
Wow! That's honestly scary! Good thing you caught it.
Yikes! Good thing you checked. Though it would have been funny if it had been Birth Control pills....
Way to watch out Mim...that could have been bad!
Yes, Mim's warning is all important. I am one that always checks the pills before I leave the counter. A few years ago, when I was on hormone replacement theropy, I went to pick up my bottle of hormones and they where usually a pink color, but the ones in the bottle where green. I brought it to the attention of the pharmacist and she apoligized over and over again and tole me she was going to write herself up. Anyway, I don't know what I had, but definatly not what I was supposed to have.

Good catch Mims!

Also it is important to know your blood type. I had a blood transfusion with my the birth of my first daughter and was always donating blood so I did know my blood type. So 9 yrs later when I was pregnant with my 3rd child, they always run your blood type, and they came back and told me I had positinve blood. I know I have negative blood, so told the dr it was wrong and how I knew it was wrong. I'm glad I caught the error. So plz be vigilant regarding your medical information.
Adding my voice to "always check your prescription before you leave the store" chorus. I've never gotten the wrong one, but pharmacists are so busy, mistakes can happen.
Wow that was a close one. Good pick up!
Good catch!!!

I had a re-fill and at my pharmacy they always open the bottle and shake one out to see if it looks the same. Well my pills are pinky/orange. I said to the pharmacist that they must have changed colors because mine weren't the same color. She told me to wait a moment and went and double checked and it was the wrong prescription.
Wow Mim! 8O It's a good thing you are a sticky beak. (LOVE that EXPRESSION  ) That could've been a disaster.
The true question is ..would you of said anything if the refill was VIAGRA? LOL just kidding good catch
Of course not. :sidestep:
