Can a tail grow back after docking???

This is really difficult to explain. Buffet was docked as flush to his behind as possible. No protrution at all. Over the last 6 weeks I noticed the coat covering his nub looked different, it was sticking up when it never had before. I felt his nub and it was extended where it had never been before. 8O Then a few days later it was flush again. Now it sticks out more than not.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Maybe he is holding the tail up?
Does it wag?
Dogs can't regrow tails, no  But as they mature the dock may not seem as flush as it was when it was done (this from my vet who spends the first two years of my dogs' lives grabbing their behinds to check her handiwork - docking is an artform) I can feel just a little bit of a nub on my guys. Not a bad thing in my mind. There is such a thing as too close.

How old is Buffet?

My foster was docked improperly and has this bizzare stub you can't pretend to ignore. I've never lived with anything like it before so don't know how to trim it. The hair grows kind of oddly. Instead of growing off the butt like on my dogs, the hair on the stub grows in it's own directions which makes for a funky look. But I haven't really noticed any actual changes to the stub itself in her case. She just has these regular bad tail hair days

Changes over 6 weeks...what was the hair situation during that time? Was he shorter and now it's growing out maybe?

The original docking left nothing to hold up. I could feel the tiniest little bump on his behind. I haven't seen wagging yet.

Buff is 5 1/2. I think he falls into the "almost too close" category of docking. His hair has always looked perfect as it grows out for the winter until this year. Now it looks like he bought a hair bump at one of the mall kiosk's. :? I can feel a marked difference to the tail. It was almost nonexistent before, literally a mosquito bite on his butt. Now it really sticks out.

I thought I'd throw this one out to the board before taking him to the vet to have it looked at. My vet doesn't know squat about Sheepies and this topic should really baffle him. Time for expensive tests!
Before you throw yourself into expensive testing I'd ask for a recommendation for a good chiro vet. Maybe something is simply out of whack? 8O

If your regular vet tells you he's totally baffled, he has my sympathy.

You're 100 % sure it's the tail stub and not a growth? Probably an insulting question, but, really, these suckers don't regrow. Maybe best to check with your vet first and if he (she? sorry) is totally baffled, consider vising a chiro vet if you have one in your neck of the woods. I can't imagine what other possibilties there could be. Keep us posted please.

Yes, I was thinking Chiroprator. Buff is a hairy freight train on paws. When that boy runs and plays, nothing is safe. Head butts and body slams just come natural for him. I'm hoping he popped something out of place the last time he took the turn too high and went rolling.
I wondered if his tail is swelling due to a sprain. Can you sprain a tail? :?
Or else an infection or as Kristine suggested a growth/tumor.

Good luck. :crossed:
Have a good feel of the nub and see if any swelling making it protrude more then usual. Feel it at the end no sort of like maybe some sort of abcess at the end of the nub or swelling making it stick out more then usual.
Just back from the vet with our B-boy. It's another one for the books, his tail is growing, sort of. The vet believes it's either a calcium deposit or tissue granules (?) that are building up on the end of the vertebra. Over all, it has been put in the don't worry about it for now category. I just need to get acustom to a tail that is about 1 inch longer.
8O 8O
Now that is a new one.

Indeed!
8O WOW 8O
What was that guy's name? John Bobbitt? I bet he'd be interested in learning how a tail can grow back!
I had an aunt whose tonsils grew back.

Holy crow, I hope he doesn't figure out how to grow anything else!

My Puppy i just got tail was stubbed and now its getting longer. I Swear O_O maybe chiuauas can be born with stubbed tails and they grow out? =/
This thread is taking an uncanny turn in the direction of the infamous "Tubes is tied" thread.

That's not that uncommon. Half of one of my tonsils has grown back too. My internist says it's almost impossible to get every bit of tonsil tissue out and tonsils are like livers - they regenerate.

It really makes me mad because I suffered with tonsils for so long, had them out as an adult with a terrible surgery and recovery only to now get strep throat occasionally again.

Anywho.

I had a foster with a bad docking job too, it was almost like a broken vertebrae was still attached and hanging on the end of his nub. Sad.
