Early Morning Risers

Does anyone know what is going on with my dogs? The past two days, they have been pawing and whining at me to wake up at 2am, and repeatedly till I finally start my day at 6am. They're adults (almost 4 and 1 1/2 years old).

They don't go out to use the facilities, they just want to veg and play. I let them out, they go off the deck and touch down on the grass for 5 minutes and then come right back to the door. I let them in, and we start all over again in 20 minutes.

It is getting cooler now, so I'm thinking it may be that they just like the cool air. We keep the house at most at 72, so it's not overly warm inside.

Any ideas on what I should do? I'm reluctant to leave them outside for long stretches in the night, as we have a ton of racoons and stray cats that frequent our yard.

Help!

will they get in their bed when you tell them??? My girl will whine when she needs to go out and then goes right back to bed. She has gotten up to get a drink in the middle of the night as well. If you think they are hot they do make a bed which can be cooled. Sounds a little crazy but if they are hot it may work.
Are your windows open at night? My dogs do this sometimes too and I think they smell the racoons or possums, or even cats, in the yard. Also the wind causes some strange noises.

Sounds like they are either smelling something out there or getting spooked by something and just want to alert you to it and/or go out and check it.

Could there be a new loose dog in the yard or possibly one in heat?
Wendel sleeps on the floor next to my bed, Asterisk likes to sleep at my feet. They do go into the kitchen and sleep on the linoleum to cool down. It's hard to describe, but it's as if their internal clocks have told them that it is time to get up at 2am. Asterisk will whine, Wendel will keep pawing at my face and shoulder till I get up. I don't know what the deal is...
this might sound weird. But have you checked your health lately? Could be something they sence in your sleeping that they are alerting to.
Do you live close to your nearest neighbors? Maybe someone close by has had a change of schedule, either a night job, or a new baby, that has them up and moving around at 2 AM...your pups may be interpreting those sounds as "its morning"!

I did have to laugh, though, over your "not overly hot" house at 72...we keep ours at 60, and the dogs are still usually wanting to sleep plastered up next to a cool doorway or window! Like most Alaskans, they are heat-wimps!
Yes, I had to laugh too at 72 degrees...We live in New York, not too far north and keep our temp at about 65 or less and I wonder if that is too warm! For me personally, at my age  I need it colder than 72 or I am uncomfortable.
Baley and Baxter started getting us up earlier after the time change. They both always slept until 7:00AM--even after my husband got up at 6:00 they would stir a bit and then go back to sleep. After the time changed they both started getting up around 5:00. Baley does the same thing--paws me until I get up and let them out. They are out about 5 minutes and want right back in. We don't have the windows open and our bedroom is always around 66 to 68 degrees. We have been wondering why too--at first I thought it was the time change--but their timing is off more than an hour. I am hoping that 'this too shall pass'.
