Help Finding a Breeder in the Southeast

Hello!

I am looking for an old english sheepdog puppy somewhere in the southeast. I have found two breeders in north carolina carolina shores and riverbin dogs. This is my first time buying a puppy and want to make sure i go with the best breeder. There are not too many breeders in the area. Does anyone know anything about these two breeders? Also how many litters should a dog have of puppies?

thanks so much!

From what I see most bitches only have two or three litters - in a lifetime, not a year.

Why limit yourself geographically? I had my dogs shipped from Chicago and Michigan - they were none the worse for wear. One thing I learned is finding the right breeder is more important than finding someone who happens to have puppies available.
I believe there have been conversations about both of those breeders on this forum-- and I don't think they're reputable breeders.

Have you looked at the breeder referral section of the breed club website? That's where we always refer people first:

Yup, I was right. Riverbin sells its pups on Puppyfind and Carolina Shores was questionable, too.

Thank you all for replying back. The most important thing to me is getting a puppy from a reputable breeder, it will be much better in the long run. I would not mind getting a dog shipped to me although i am hesitant because that means i would not be able to visit the home where the puppies are raised or the parents before i purchased the dog. Can anyone reccomend breeders that ship great old english sheepdogs and have had a pleasant experience with? i am not sure how to go about this process and find the best breeder.

Thank you so much!
I am in St. Louis, MO....and my dog was shipped from Colorado..
I went with an OESCA preferred breeder, but also, we talked and emailed ALOT before the puppy came.

I can tell you I followed my gut and not my heart!! There was never a time I had any doubts about the quality puppy I was receiving. I was able to 'see' the mom and dad through photos, and I trusted my breeder to pick the perfect dog for what I wanted. I told her I needed a calm (er)...great temperamented dog because I was interested in doing pet therapy.....

Finally, I made sure I was connected to this wonderful forum!! The advice, suggestions and support were (and are) an invaluable part of my success with raising my pup so far!!!!

On Tuesday of this week, my 2 1/2 year old, "Heart" graduated from the TOUCH therapy program... :yay:

Good Luck and please keep us posted!!!!!!!! :D

Most reputable breeders probably won't have both parents on site for you to see anyway. As breeders work to improve the quality of their line, they seek out other lines to breed with to add strength to their own. Many times, the breeding occurs artificially or the stud is brought in during the female's ovulation time.

If you're working off the list on the Old English Sheepdog Club of America site, you can feel pretty confident that the pups are all raised well and the parents have undergone proper testing before breeding-- genetic, temperament, soundness. They all sign a code of ethics to adhere by and most of these people are really serious about it.

Many times, even if a reputable breeder doesn't have pups, they'll know who does and may be able to refer you to another good breeder to work with.
Can you register as a member and I can PM you with info for an OESCA (Old English Sheepdog Club of America) breeder in NJ that has puppies right now.
I had a puppy shipped from Seattle to Detroit with no problem. Zachary is from a very reputable breeder in WA.

My Bogey is from Riverbin. He is wonderful! healthy, has a greatl temperment and beautiful. I am in touch with others who have pups from Riverbin and was before I adopted Bogey. All are healthy and wonderful. Ruth has been breeding OES for more than 20 years and is very knowledgable. Bogey is one of the best OES we have had. Check out his photos in my photos. he is 6 1/2 months old now.

I don't think a ladies' sweater will fit James very well-- not to mention, he doesn't really swing that way.

I suppose I could forgive you for pointing it out if you wanted to just buy me the sweater. Size M, please.

"oes.org: good for sheepdogs great for ecommerce."
I am looking for an old english sheepdog puppy that will be ready to go around MAy or June of next year, unfortunately i am not able to get a puppy before then. Does anyone know of any breeders that will be having puppies around that time. I would really like it to be sometime i am able to drive and visit the parents and maybe a previous littler of puppies before i purchase. I live in north carolina now. thanks!
you can see and meet dogs for most OESCA breeders at shows. the best idea is to try to find a show around you. However, meeting the parent and seeing puppies is not a substitution for making sure all health testing is done and viewable at OFA or another site. In fact a lot of questionable breeders might use those ploys to get an emotional response - OES puppies are had to resist ;)
