Time for a new laptop

My laptop is dying, and I need to replace it very soon. It is an old Dell that I got from a family member years ago - used! I use it at work (on mute) during my 12 hr shifts, as we can not listen to radio, have TV on or anything that makes noise (my client is on a vent and I need to hear for any problems).

It needs to be portable , as I lug it along every day. This one is quite heavy! I am considering a smaller laptop or a netbook. All I need is to surf the net and for it to have decent photo storing capabilities.

Input please! :)

Ahh my new laptop is being delivered this weekend - and its :yay: green :yay:

Anyway - Dan's laptop died about two months ago and he got a netbook through dell. So when mine died two weeks ago, I tried out the netbook. I did not like it at all.

So I bought a newer version of the Dell XPS I used to have, I left out a lot of the extras (like TV) I never ever used and spent less than $1,000. It is light weight (although I always order the longer battery that makes it heavier) - weighs less than a folding crate and is a lot less bulky :D It even has a backlit keyboard - I can't wait!!!
IMHO, your best place for advice would be with a Dell Tech. My dad works for Dell, and they're very good at getting you exactly what you want. Like if you told them lightweight, what you do mostly on the net so they know how much storage you need, price range, etc. Then when you hang up with them, call back and ask the next tech the same thing. (I'm being serious) This gives you something to compare with, and even if you gave the new tech exactly what the last one did... they can tell you what you may NOT need or need off of what you were given. That's at least what I would do ;)
I was wondering about the Dells. Used to be top of the line. The new Consumers Guide rated them at the very bottom for customer service. :(

So do I just hope I never need help?
My opinion really is that they have the best, but I'm going up against consumer guide. I'm going to guess they know what they're talking about BUT I question if it's the product they're upset about combined with the fact they have to talk to someone who doesn't live in the country b/c from my experience and everyone I know that HATES Dell...

they answer the phone quick now
they send products out the very next day if they're broke
they stay on the phone with you until it's completely fixed

problems are:
you have to be patient with your slow-talking customer service rep who is hard to understand (unless you're lucky and get someone from the u.s.)

a lot of the problems you run into like a virus require you to be on the phone with them for 2 hrs (not from wait time but steps you must take and how long those steps take)

things do break down a lot and there were ZERO (that's A BIG FAT 0) notebooks in iraq both of my husband's tours that didn't have missing keys on them. we're talking several 100 laptops. Again, plus is... you just call and no questions asked about anything really, they'll send you new keys out.

my mil and fil were SO fed up with their dell. They hated it breaking down a lot. So they went with apple and after JUST buying a laptop, they went with another dell. They couldn't stand their apple or the customer service.

Having two college students in the family almost required we have two laptops so my daughter bought (through school at a discount) a Dell. Less than three months into useage the hard drive went out. I did an online chat with a tech and they overnighted a new hard drive at no cost to us. It was easy to install (they would have walked us through it if we'd needed that). I'd recommend their outlet section which has new (someone ordered but didn't follow through) and refurbished equipment at great prices.

Just wanted to let you know my experience with Dell.

Good luck!
thanks guys - keep the comments coming! :D
my son bought this one at Best buy. He does a lot with it. He likes the 17" screen and has a lot of RAM for speed. the price was good too. We liked the service from Best Buy as well

I dont know if they're available over there but whatever you do dont get acer.

Wayne and I both bought acer laptops and they have been back under warranty way too often.

yes we do have them here. I don't (other than you) know anyone who has them though.
I was recently at an IT technicians to retrieve some lost data and he said that the few people he knew with acer had some problems too. :P
I have a Dell. The first one died and they replaced it with a refurbished - bigger hard drive and faster processor. Zero problems with the replacement in almost 4 years.

My daughter had to have a laptop for PT school, so we bought her a Dell. Since we bought her one, we also bought each of her brother one. Almost 3 years and zero issues - and my daughter has to carry hers to and from class and to clinicals. Very durable.

With all of the problems that I had with my first Dell laptop, I must have my account flagged as a troublemaker. I instantly get handled by the supervisor. They have been great about doing what they say.

My next laptop will be a Dell.
I will never buy another Dell, bought a laptop in 2005, it arrived but didn't work, when contacted Dell said oh it's the hard drive we will send you another so that you can replace, that didn't work so then dell said ..oh it's the motherboard we will send you one so that you can replace it. I said no. if I'm speding big bucks I want a computer that works, not one I have to build myself. Well after about 3 months of almost daily phoning ( to India) and complaining they did send me another one that worked. But I will never buy dell again . Oh and by the way in the meantime I bought a little Acer (which I gave to my gdaughter when a working Dell finally arrived)and it is still working great
Love my Dell-- HATE my husband's HP.
Joan has a Compaq... it has been 100% reliable for 2 (3?) years. She's on it 8 hrs a day plus travels with it occasionally. I make use of it when we travel over the holidays.

2 Downsides: the fan is noisy and there is no PCMCIA slot.

I think we paid $200 or $300 on a black Friday sale. My brother got one at the same time -- right now he has an issue burning CDs.
I have a Fujitsu Lifebook P series. Size/weight was the ultimate issue for me, as I travel around the world constantly for my job and did not want to be lugging a monster laptop. This one weighs a little more than 3 1/2 lbs, is 10" wide x 7 1/2" deep and 1" thick, fast, has all the computing power one could possibly need or want, including a built in CD/DVD burner and card slots. It has taken a lot of abuse from me over the last several years and still looks and runs perfectly. I highly recommend Fujitsu laptops. Both my husband and dad have other models and none of us have had one problem with them. One the downside, Fujitsu laptops do tend to be pricey.

Thanks - I am still looking.
I have been searching online, looking at sales flyers.
I plan to shop in person at Best Buy after work, to actually see some of them!
Wow... haven't even thought of pcmcia cards in a long time Ron, I threw out a ton of them as they just aren't necessary anymore, haven't been in years and years.

I would most definitely go with a Dell for any computer, desktop or laptop. Very reliable, decent customer service most of the time, but what I like most is I just don't NEED customer service.

Ya know, I guess that's true. I used them for networking and cell Internet and it was handy to have when my USB 802.11 went down, but come to think of it with builtin wifi and USB everything else, you're right!

So I take that back. It's just a bit noisy.
I got my new laptop last night, and I'm using it at work right now!

It is an Asus, and overall had most of the features I wanted, without breaking the bank (remember my Element vs deer accident - I took a hit in the computer budget on that one!).
I was hoping to go smaller than my previous one, but it is lighter weight!

Some features:
Intel Pentium with dual core processor
4GB memory
DVD/CD RW
320GB hard drive
windows 7 home premium edition
web cam, facial recognition, built in wireless/ethernet,
and a bunch of preinstalled software
16 " HD backlit screen

Thanks for all your input!
Pyr friend bought an Acer on recommendations of computer tech in their small town. She just wrote her DVD/cd went out and will have to buy a stand alone, she is mildly pissed. Her machine is about a year old.

I've heard the Acers are OK, but don't last long over a year. So, I avoided them when looking.

I bought a new Dell laptop in April. I'm very disappointed. The first one I received would not even turn on. I spent HOURS on the phone with "customer" service to get it resolved.

I will never buy a computer online again. I want a store I can walk into and complain (if I have to) and not sit on hold listening to the New Deli top 10.

Buy one in person!
