Anyone consider CPE trials - just so you know.

I entered Marley in her fourth CPE trial for early December, notice I said fourth. The trial secretary figured out we were jumping at our regular height under the enthusiast grouping. Apparently that is a no- no. Although everyone I know thinks you can choose to jump at a higher height than you would regularly you can't except for, well, regular.

Now, for those of you who have no idea what I am talking about - aren't you the least bit intrigued? CPE is a great venue to trial in for agility - usually fun people and entertaining courses. You should all give it a try. Some people choose only to trial in CPE or you can use it for practice - I like to use it for skill building (and we were doing Enthusiast for my own comfort :) )

I've been surfing the CPE trials, with recommendation from my instructor that it would be a good practice for us (I interpret that as ME!)

Sadly, one is this weekend (I work) and the next is Dec 5-6. I emailed the secretary and they are already full. :( :(

The next planned one in MN is in March.......but not on the schedule yet. Hopefully they (host club) decide to do it!

I planned on jumping the 20" that regular uses. He has no injury that we are nursing, and he jumps 20 all the time so far. In AKC he will be jumping 24".
Yeah I jumped Marley at 20 - she is AKC 24 as well. But I entered as enthusiast, mostly because of the time and - in my head - less pressure. we will just do regular from now on. we have a trial the weekend of the 4th and (hopefully - I haven't heard back yet) over New Year's weekend as well.

I think its a good idea before AKC if you haven't done AKC before - jsut for the procedural practice
Around here I think most CPE trials are in IL. Or I don't hear about them   They do sound like good pratice. If Sybil doesn't stop sightseeing in the weaves I may need to find one or two myself. She still needs more ring experience and AKC isn't the best place to get it, that's true.

No not in WI. I looked. :(

Lots on the east coast, and in MI.
The 2 in the next month were the only ones listed in MN for the whole next year. It was the full show's trial secretary who told me about the one planned for March. Luckily, it's a group I know - they host the UKC weight pulls in our area - great to have contacts!
ASCA is also good for green dogs. It's like NADAC used to be before the originators ran amok.

I think one of the Aussie owners in my club announced that the local Aussie club was offering both ASCA and CPE in January. I also think it conflicted with an AKC trial, but I have to check.

This is mainly AKC and USDAA country. There used to be more UKC agility, which, Dawn, you are NOT to try, please, because it slows dogs like ours down to syrup mode. All tight, tight control. Basically obedience with obstacles. Snore. By all means do NADAC if you don't have ASCA trials in your part of the world - Gale and Sunny and I used to do that and it was a hoot. The UKC obedience program on the other hand is supposed to be excellent.

Kristine
I haven't heard of any UKC agility around us. (yes, the UKC obedience is good - I've done that)

Mostly AKC, with the occasional USDAA here too.
The NADAC nationals were in Mankato, MN about 10 yrs ago, for 2 yrs running, don't see them too much lately.

At this point I don't want to scramble my brain with rules/regs of a ton of groups anyway!

Rules smules - I just go in and follow the course :) Since I have a bizarre instructor who gets her kicks tormenting me that isn't as harsh as it sounds. :)

yes, but agilty is just one of the many sports I am keeping track of mentally.
I would hate to have the message appear that my "memory is full, please start deleting".

and I'm feeling a bit "full", as I just renewed my nursing license and packed 2 years worth of CEU's into the last 2 weeks of October.....
that would be bad planning on your part?

Honestly I only do CPE, DOCNA and eventually AKC - although we are registered with USDAA and if they have a trial in our backyard I would go, but for fun not titles.

We do have a fun group - I think there is an article about it in CR last month - that meets and has little run thrus I guess you would say off and on all winter. Its made up of the major area training centers and clubs teams. I don't train with them, but was able to get on one of the teams this winter. Its a good deal and a good way to get familiar with some of the indoor venues.

Just saying - you might want to look into organizing something like that in your area. They grew from something like five teams five years ago to 80 teams this year.
Geographically, how big of an area does this group of 80 teams cover?
and what constitutes a team? - a group of handlers with dogs, or are you talking each handler+dog is one team?
each handler and dog is a team. they allow 60 (I think) to run each week and some people have more than one dog so they count as two teams (but can only bring one dog per week).

as far as geography, (NY is really more rural than people think) I guess most people come from a radius of just over an hour in all directions, although I know some are further out, the most I have to travel would be an hour and 10 minutes :?: .
How many different facilities do you meet at? and how many different ones do you all train at?

We really only have the one Kennel Club facility in Mankato offering agility, and people are driving an hour plus to get to this one. Rochester (MN ) is about 1.5 hrs east and they do agility too. Those are the only 2 I know of. I guess I am in a black hole for agility classes and facilities around here.

Me too!!
Just last week I downloaded the Registration Form for CPE. I haven't filled it out yet. Just lazy, its cold, its dark...Man I hate fall and winter.

Anyway, I think Simon may be ready for this. He's come a long way and is doing really well...when I'm not flying over the top of him. "We" are working on him NOT running in front of me and then stopping.

Just this last week, we were "supposed" to do three jumps and then into the weaves...The A-frame was close to the jumps and would be a natural to do next and the weave was off to the side a little.

Sometimes (alot) what we are supposed to do and what we actually do are just a little different. We did the jumps and I took two steps toward the A-frame with my arm extended in that direction and realized thats not where we are supposed to go  I was exasperated with ME and I put my hands over my face and said no, no, no. I pulled my hands away and there was Simon right in front of me...waiting. I thought for sure he was going to do the A-frame because my arm was extended in that direction.

I think it was a combination of NOT telling him to climb it and my stopping that made him stop...whatever it was...I sure was PROUD of my boy.

Yeah, I think he's ready for CPE...even if I'm not.
no weaves in level 1, which makes it a nice transition
My CPE application is in the mailbox!

Now all I need is a trial in driving distance.....

If I do that I will be a holiday deserter! 8)

Memorial Day - St Louis - Sheepiepalooza
Easter - WI for agility seminar

But, I will talk w/ Todd. He really is gung ho about getting Chewie started in agility. He always liked this sport, and after reading your book, he even more is on board!
He was pretty bummed when I told him there were no trials for months and months around here....

oh, and there is work to consider as well. :( I asked for Christmas off already.
geesh Dawn we are doing a three day new years CPE trial
LOL - that would be pushing it... I would need more than 3 days just for for travel.
At least Kristine's is under 7 hours!
