Heartbreaking

Yesterday morning DH and I took the dogs to our favorite cafe. We can sit outside and have coffee and lovely Italian pastries. :excited:

While DH was inside ordering a young woman stopped to make a fuss of Tiggy. :D She then told me that she grew up with a sheepie. She said her Granny named him Gypsy because he was very patched.

Then she got all teary and said that she was Croatian and when the soldiers came through they shot him.

I didnt know what to say, I was so shocked and horrified. She only stayed a little while longer to pat Tiggy some more then she said Goodbye. It was so surreal sitting outside a cafe on a lovely peaceful morning hearing about the terrible things that happen in the world.

It would kill me if something like that happened to my pets, I just cant imagine how bad it would be. I didnt dare to ask after her family.

I think I would spend the rest of my life tracking the shooter down if that's what it took and making sure he got his.

Taking a train back to grad school from a quick trip to see friends in Vienna I detoured through Budapest and Prague just to do some quick sightseeing. Leaving Budapest I shared the compartment with only one other person, a young, clearly nervous young woman who almost jumped out of her skin as we entered the Czech Republic and the customs people came through. They gave her a bit of a hard time after barely glancing at my Norwegian passport, but they finally left. Afterwards, she started chatting, mostly I think as a release of nervous energy. She was from Bosnia, had been a grad student when the war broke out, but traveling on a Croation passport apparently acquired by interesting means we didn't get into.

We ended up talking through the night and even with the language barrier, we spoke a mix of german and english, I walked away knowing more about the war than I ever wanted to know. She was meeting up with friends in Prague, but her ultimate destination was Copenhagen - her boyfriend had been there when the war started and was allowed to stay. She didn't know if any of her family members were still alive.

I still think about her some times, when I get cranky over stupid stuff, and how spoiled I am in the relative scheme of things.

So sad but I am glad tiggy brought a bit of joy and comfort to her.

We are a lucky country not to experience wars and I just cant imagine through wars loosing your fur kids and family and friends.

Very hard to know what to say, just glad tiggy was there and she could pat her :D
True. Nothing like a dose of reality to put things in perspective for us, huh? Sure makes you appreciate how blessed we are. Hugging Tiggy must've brought her some comfort. :ghug:
