Evil puppy spent the night at the vet.

Thankfully he'll be coming home soon.

Night before last he spent vomiting and had explosive. um, backend messiness. He didn't want his food at all, and couldn't keep down water either.

The vomiting persisted long after there was nothing left in his system poor guy. I know that we could have gone to the emergency vet, and were in contact with them, but I really wanted to see our regular vet, so we comforted him through the night and took him right in. (The vomiting would happen every hour and a half or so, twice, and then he'd go back to sleep.)

Something upset his tummy violently, but the x rays showed no blockage or obvious damage. They did bloodwork and put him right on IV fluids before the results were done. When they came back they showed everything was okay, but his kidneys were on the borderline between normal and distressed due to dehydration. (That was the thing I was most concerned about when I raced him in.)

A round of barium went through without incident and he didn't vomit yesterday at the vet.

He was on fluids overnight and has kept his breakfast down today, so I can pick him up in a few hours. Thank goodness.

I have no idea what made him so violently ill. He did have his first ever (AND NOW ONLY EVER) Dentastik so maybe he can't handle those. Or maybe it was stale/spoiled/whatever. At any rate, those won't be coming back in our home ever again, just to be sure. All of our sheepies had hard times with the richer kinds of dog treats, so I guess Hudson's on that list too.

I was so worried about him as we went to the vet. He walked beside me perfectly, made no noise or fuss in the car, listened when I told him to sit, was super quiet, and didn't even try to jump on anyone. I thought he was dying.

I've been told that he's back to his old tricks now at the clinic, and that things will be "much quieter" for them when he's back home. :D :D :D (I take no offense whatsoever to that comment.) That line alone is how I know evil puppy's going to be okay.

Glad he is doing better!! I have one I can'r give any treats to or he ends up in the Morgan suite at the vet clinic.
Poor guy - and poor you! :(

I'm glad he's on the mend :D
Poor Evil Puppy.. I am glad he is on the mend.
Poor boy!
Glad he's up to his old tricks.
I know how glad you'll be to get him home.
ahhhh poor boy and not so good for you either. hope all is better
Just to update...

He's home and while he's not a hundred percent yet he was feeling well enough to steal a sock and be chased through the house by his crazy mom yelling drop it. (As if that EVER works.)

So, he's on the mend.

We're on bland food for a few days, some Zantac (they chuckled when they were describing that medication to me so I'd know what to look for at the store and I pulled the jumbo economy sized bottle out of my purse. I never leave home without it...) and something called gastri calm.

All seems right with his world.
How very scary. I am so glad the he is okay!
You know I have to admit, I was surprised at how serious a bout of vomiting/messy bum could become. Once we ruled out an obstruction I thought he'd just be sent home.

I knew he was dehydrated, but I had no idea how quickly that would happen or how serious it really was. I'm really pleased that they put him on fluids immediately, based on his symptoms BEFORE waiting for all the tests.

It killed me to leave him there overnight, but what a difference for him once the fluids were in!
I really feel for you. I had a scary time with my sheepie once and had to leave him in the vets for a couple of days. Visiting him was so traumatic as he was hooked up to a drip and really feeing sorry for himself. I had to take some friends along with me for moral support.

I'm so glad that your evil little puppy is on the mend.....poor little guy!
I know how horrible it can be. They go down so quickly. When Lola was having her seizures, I about lost my mind. I am so glad he is almost back to 'Full Mischief'. :yay:
Just catching up on this post - so glad Hudson is on the mend from his very scary experience! :phew: :excited: Isn't it funny how the very traits that drive us so crazy when they're normal are the exact ones we look forward to when they're better!

Big hug to the evil puppy!!
:ghug:
So glad your baby is home and feeling better!

Dehydration can happen very quickly - even with the bigger dogs. My dog, 100 pounds, was admitted to the hosptial for dehydration. It happened overnight, he vomitted once and pooped very loose a few times bfore bed ...then overnight, he woke me up to poop again... and again and again..He was acting strange...I took him in to ER and he was severly dehydrataed. They said if I had waited until the morning ( like I planned to do and take him to his regulr Vet) to take him to my regular Vet, he would have collapsed from dehydration! He spent three days at the hospital... He needed IV fluids abd other meds...No matter how much fluid you think your dog is drinking, when sick, vomitting and diarrea, fever, etc., it is not enought to sustain them and they will dehydrate.
Fo all the readers out there, do not fool around with a dehydration problem...

Glad your doggy is doing better and hoep he continues to do well.
Ooooh poor Hudson!! I am so glad he is on the mend. Give him lots of love and
:ghug:
Hope Hudson is feeling better soon!
