Bamboo

I have been meaning to post this for a while now,so I have been wondering does anyone else here have any Lucky Bamboo in their homes?I found Bamboo over a yr ago,and I just love it.They are so pretty w/ being really green and leafy.I have a pretty good green thumb, however my best friend kills anything that is green..hehe!! I turned her onto this bamboo and she loves it not only is it pretty but it is very simple to care for.You can buy it as stalks and make your own creation w/ differnt vases and differnt stones or you can buy them already in vases or differnt containers. All you have to do is make sure it has alot of water and keep it out of direct sunlight. No dirt,no fertilizers, just water.I have a really big one in a really beautiful oriental pot and to hold them in place you fill your pot w/ rocks and on the top of the rocks or gravel i have some really beautiful stones, and seashells. My daughter and I collected some seashells from our trip to florida so i placed them on top of the gravel.Theres many things you can do as far as what differnt pots, vases, and containers you can put it in.Also theres a few differnt types of lucky bamboo.theres curly stalks that has they grow they spiral up really pretty and unique, then theres the straight bamboo that spuds grow out of the stalk, and then theres the leafy type that is really pretty. For me I have all types of it,and it just adds so much growth and beauty to my home, and like I said it really is easy to care for.I mist mine w/ water every day due to the dry air from running the heat. Now where can you buy it?i know here target sells it,and they are $9.99 and they come in a square looking pot,but I have found target doesnt take care of them and the stalks are usually yellow meaning they havent been watered, but also i have found some healthy ones there,so you just have to go and check. Also you can find them at a nursery for plants.Like a garden center would carry them. The curly type is a little bit more expensive but well worth the unique look.I thought Id ask if anyone else has bamboo in their homes, because I just love mine, and my best friend just loves here.My daughter has a small one in her room and it just lights up her room.Let me know if any of you have questions, and please let me know if anyone goes and gets any,I should say they are addictive!!LOL!!I just wanted to pass them on because like I said I just love this plant. :D

Tanya,
I just bought one for a friend as a house warming present.
My sister gave me one when I moved into my last house.
I had it for three years and all of a sudden it started turning yellow.
Two of the three stalks died. I am so upset about it.
I have no idea what happened or why it died...
Maybe the water here... It seems to have been dying since we moved here in June..

Sounds neat. Sadly, the only plants that survive around our house is my rose bushes! I manage to kill ivy! lol
Cool. I'm a serial plant killer, so I don't think Bamboo will be safe with me
As long as we keep it high up. Our cat likes to eat all of our plants, which is why we only have 2--one is Ivy hanging in the kitchen which she either can't reach, or doesn't know is there, and the other is on the table by the front door that she has chewed almost every leaf. We've given up stopping her from doing it because it makes her happy.

My wife brought home a bamboo from a bridal shower a few years ago and as long as we remember to water it, it's been keeping quite nicely.
I have a pretty green thumb and still manage to kill my share of bamboo. It can be easily found in any China Town and many Asian stores including Asian food stores as many people use it in their alter rooms. You can get a lot of varieties of bamboo on Ebay. I've gotten three varieties that way and only managed to kill one. My oldest healthyist bamboo came from Wal Mart, go figure. I've found some really healthy pieces at booths in Festivals, especially those featuring lots of different countries. I like to make nice arrangements with it as gifts as it is so easy to custom fit to the person with their favorite colors in the stones or even little figures or shells mixed in.
I'm not an expert, but the last time I bought some the lady told me to change the water weekly, and was advised that they only live for about 3 years, so don't think its your poor green thumb. I've had some for about 2 or so years, and have lost 2 of the three stalks.
I tried to keep some in my office at work-- which has no natural light--and it lasted a week. I figured that was the reason so I got one for home. Same thing happened even though I followed the directions. I'm comfortable now with the fact that plants do not like me :x
Shelly,
I feel better after hearing that they only live for about 3 year.
I have a green thumb and every plant I have ever had has flourished.
With the exception of heather (Nobody I know can keep that stuff alive) and this now almost dead bamboo.
The one Ivy plant I got I bought it because it looked sickley... To see if I could save it. I had it for 7 years until I had to move. I was bringing it with me and put the pot on my car truck when it slid off and the pot shatter into a million pieces. I was literally leaving right then from NY to go to CA so I left it..
ButtersStotch...My Mom has one in a bathroom with no natural light. The only light it gets is when someone uses the bathroom and it is doing great.
I don't understand that... Mine was in a bathroom with indirect light like they are supposed to get. Though maybe it liked my other house better.
I had it on my mantle there. Or maybe like Shelly said it was it's time to go. I had it for over 3 yrs.

I did a bad trick on my dh. At our old house, we had bamboo stalks growing in our backyard. So one day, he took a cutting from one and tried to grow it. The poor cutting, it sat in water for a few weeks and didn't do anything....until dh left on a business trip. I tossed the pathetic cutting and replaced it with a very nice piece of bamboo that I bought at the flea market. Except dh came home... ...feeling like the guy who could grow anything and feed the masses to boot. Eventually I had to 'fess up  . He did laugh about it....well, kind of.
How funny, that sounds like something I'd do. I'd never be able to hold out and not tell right away. I'd be doing my sinister giggle. muhahahahaha
We're going to try to grow bamboo outside in the next few years as a natural barrier between our yard & the neighbor's. It's an awesome plant.
yes i agree bamboo is awesome.i cant believe so many of you had problems growing it.uhmmmmm.....i guess plants are just not some peoples thing..hehe!!i mist my plants every day because it gets so darn dry inside from the heat running.Im thnking the bamboo in the bathroom is doing well due to the humidity from the shower.i have a couple of plam trees also inside and they are doing great also but they need to be mist like 2times a day they dry out so fast.well im glad that alot of you have had success w/ bamboo i just think they are so unique and really nice and green.im so addicted to bamboo my house looks like a rain forrest in Asia!!!LOL!!
The bamboo at the old house grew to about 30 ft when left alone. We were constantly trimming the evergrowing patch...my son loved making fishing poles out of the slender parts! Now we are trying to grow coconut palms....I do love the sound of the wind blowing thru palm trees (except during hurricane season :( ).
I love plants, and have one plant that has lived since it was given as a gift in 1997. I've taken cuttings from it over the years, and they have all done well too, but any other plant I've had dies a horrible dehydrated death. I dunno... I just forget about them. Maybe if they were furry I'd remember to water them... The one that has lived has done so out of sheer stubborness I'm sure, it has nothign to do with me. I rarely remember to water it, but every couple of months I might throw it in the shower. Then I forget to take it out of the bathroom and it hangs in there for a couple of weeks at a time.
Okay - I am poking around and I realize this is a "dead" post but wanted to share somethings.....

Ready ?

I purchased my first "Lucky Bamboo" plant 5 years ago. I still have it :) I have never heard that they only last 3 years, but then again - I havent asked. I will give you some helpful tidbits to keeping it ALIVE though.

The general care is indirect light - NO DIRECT LIGHT. It will grow fine in an office with no windows, surviving on the light that is on while you work ! Always keep it watered.

NOW, bottled, room temp. water is best. I have found that tap can lead to yellowing. With that in mind - once a stalk turns yellow - it is GONE. No matter what you do, it is dead. Not only that - if you do not remove it. It will kill the entire plant. Now, if you have yellow leaves, try and cut them back - then watch the plant to make sure the stalk was not affected. If so - remove.

Once a yellow stalk is removed, it is important to completely remove ALL stalks out of the countainer and rinse well. Rinse the rocks and the container itself also. I usually blast it with hot water to kill everything - then rinse in cool. THEN I rinse it all in bottled room temp water. - Then put it back together. *whew!*

To make Mr. Lucky Bamboo grow faster - keep it in an elevated spot. They like warm. Dont bake it - but you might want to keep it in an upstairs room, versus a basement type thing....

Why is it called LUCKY BAMBOO ??

Well, first remember, man made luck and heavens luck are two different types of luck. Heavens luck is your fate due to the time of your birth. Man made luck, is the luck you derive from hard work, timing, brains and prayers. Lucky bamboo is said to help accelerate your man made luck. The more you have, the more acceleration you get. At the very least - place your lucky bamboo (and be careful about this!) where you NEED luck ! I, had mine in my kitchen - till I heard this. I was wondering where those extra pounds were coming from ! Now I have it on my desk where I pay bills....

Hope this helps !

Dawn

Dear Tanya, I was reading your post, and I pray you could help. I have a bamboo which I am very attached to... It has been with me through very tough times... It has a yellowing stalk and a couple of leaves are starting to turn yellow now as well. I read that you were able to save yours! Can you please help me and tell me how you did it? I would be so very grateful to you. Thank you so much.

Warmest Wishes,

Dominique
