That is sad, I can't imagine how the owner must feel......
I got as far as this line:
Cautionary tale lesson No. 3: A spay is a basic procedure owners may deny their pets only when they have a very specific reason for doing so.

And decided I didn't want to be indoctrinated today.

It's not about spaying, it's about Euthanasia just like the headline states.

There was a very good segment recently on NPR's This American Life recently that went into detail about the growing Pet Insurance business. How it relates to the expense of human health care insurance and also the dollar amount that people choose in their own minds that their animal's life is worth. You can listen to it online for free on this link http://www.thisamericanlife.org/Radio_E ... sched=1321 (Act III)
I agree with VerveUp on this one. I think the overall purpose of this article was to make it known what dilemmas pet owners have. I believe the story was to illistrate that a person who recently was in the hospital and incurred her own medical expenses was probably struggling with the monitary aspect of this problem with her dog.

With the economy as it is, this may or may not be a more common occurrance.
Very interesting to think about it from the Vet's perspective. Maybe if she had presented the possibility that it was not one of the serious scary conditions, then the owner might have been more willing to treat the dog (if she had money for the surgery). The Vet wishes she had urged them to provide treatment but she herself gave the diagnoses that made the owner unwilling. If she had said it could be a treatable infection, the outcome may have been different. I'm glad she's still thinking about it but to me, the lesson isn't that Vets should offer forceful opinions (not saying they shouldn't -- it just isn't the take-away I get from this story), it is that Vet's should present all the possibilities, not just the most dire ones.

Yes so obviously its easier to get the information from a nonbiased source since there are other areas of coverage out there. I just choose not to read anything that includes an agenda that is not germaine to the topic.
We probably should practice that on this forum as well.
"Don't throw the baby out with the bath water." 8) There are important considerations in the article.
We don't have to agree with the entire thing in order to gain something of value from it.

An interesting outlook, however someone may read the article and decide to have their bitch spayed, possibly saving it's life. I wouldn't dismiss something out of hand because there may be an agenda.
