Update on Gigi's OCD surgery

It willl be three weeks tomorrow that Gigi had the surgery on both shoulders for OCD. There were only two tiny incisions on each side with maybe one or two stitches which were removed last week. The day we picked her up I was expecting her to be unable to walk and be more or less out of it. Well she was up and jumping on me. We were instructed to keep her separate from the other dogs. The first two weeks we did. I was back and forth with Gigi in one room and the others who had the run of the house. That was sooooooooo difficult and tiring. Gigi could only be leased walked. She jumped and kept biting at the leash constantly. I could not keep her from jumping. The last week I have let her out of the room but i watching closely and most of the time she is on a leash.

She now has taken to biting me. I am bruised and have little teeth marks on my thighs and arms. There are periods i cannot get her to stop. Only with a squirt bottle - well she barks at it and still attempts to bite me. This part has been hard on me. I have taken so much good care of her and she is biting me. is she just bored and wants to play?

I have spent a lot of time with her. We played find the treat with cups and a treat hidden under one. I gave her gongs. I brushed her. i laid down with her. I tried to keep her mind active. Now I cannot stop her from jumping on the bed, the couch and me outside. She almost knocked me down yesterday when we were outside on the leash. She wants to run so badly. I don't want to cause any problems with the healing.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhrg I am trying to the right thing but she feels fine and wants to play. I put her in the crate for her to rest at least a few hours each day and of course at night.

She looks so bad with her shaved legs and chest. there are little tufts of hair at the bottom of her legs. that is why said she looks like a poodle.
Maybe she hates the haircut. HA

Any other ideas on how to stop her from biting me? keep her from jumping up and down on the leash? I asked the vet for meds to calm her but he refused and suggested benadryl. did not work.

Sorry such a longgggggggggggggggg update. will post photo of my poodle soon

:(

Sheepdogs NEED lots of regular exercise. So while she is recuperating she has all this excess energy that she hasn't expended. The biting is just her way of dealing with some of this pent up energy.

I am not sure what to suggest since she IS recuperating. Maybe someone else has a suggestion.
are you restricted in how far she can walk on a leash? maybe getting her out and walking (and working on some obedience things like sit, down and heel - if they are allowed) would help keep her mind occupied. Obviously sh eis frustrated as I am sure you are.
Maybe see if there is a place you can take her for water exercise, since that would be very easy on her shoulders, no impact...

good point! Not only is it great exercise, it tires them out!!!!!
That is what I was thinking Kerry....it will tire her out and she will be strengthing those shoulders...but DO ask your vet about it just in case it would do more harm than good.....
Oh thanks! Yes there is a water therapy place not far from home. Will check with vet. Duh - I never thought of doing her obedience training. Great idea and she loves it too. i have taken her for rides in the car. she loves that. she cannot walk very far. I walk her a little in the backyard. Yesterday she went for a bath. When I picked her up she was beautiful. As soon as we got home, she fell in the pool! I got her out immediately. This has not happened before. She now has a top knot. I think she cannot see with the hair in her eyes.
Again thanks to all
If you have a pool and she can swim I would do a 10 minute morning swim (well 1 minute swim, 2 minute rest etc) and again in the evening. Check with the vet. At swim therapy my dogs get alternated swims and massage/stretching, but when we are on our own, they just swim/rest. I know some hydrotherapy involves walking on treadmills etc underwater.
when my pup was recovering from a pulled groin muscle and couldn't run for 6 weeks, I found chewing on a bully stick helped alot. I like the ones from Red Barn. The other brands seem very thin and she chews them to a small nothing that I take away ( so she doesn't choke on it) but the thick red barn ones seem to last. I buy the 12 inch.

We also did alot of heeling on leash exercises, long sits and downs and doggy "sit ups"...sit to down to sit. Not sure if you should do that one with the injury you have.

We also have another dog and I feel for you when you say how tiring it is to keep them apart and run from room to room...Hope she can run soon!
poor you i do know what you are going through i had to take my bed and put it on the floor.. i think she is just wanting to play with her bro.. hang in there
the first week i slept next to her crate. it's getting better.
i posted some photos of her before and after the surgery. sorry i still can't figure out how to get them here. duh
so peek at my photos. you will see the poodle

Oh dear, I had to laugh at those legs. Poor Gigi!
I hope your vet says yes to some swimming to keep Gigi entertained and your sanity intact. :D
thanks for posting a photo Suzi. Gee i better learn how to do thatl
Thanks. yes the legs are funny.
here is a better pic for youImage
what a cute bro and sis
I actually think her legs look good compared to what my dog looked like after ten days in ICU! Don't worry, the hair will grow back. She looks great. Hang in there. She will be able to run soon.
