Thinking about getting him a companion

He will be 5 in a couple months. Very well socialised with other dogs and great overall temperment.

Both my boys have moved out and he gets lonely when I'm at work. I was thinking of getting him a friend. The breeders I got him from just had a litter and was wonering if/what could be problems of introducing a younger dog into the house hold?

I would talk to the breeder and get her opinion. I for one always say you should never get a dog to be a companion for another dog - each dog should be desired for their own sake.
I agree as I have done it twice thinking it would make my single dog happy. Daisey, my 9 yr old OES not only wouldn't have anything to do with Rosie at 6 mths but she wouldn't look at me for weeks...she really liked being the only dog. Rosie, 9 yrs later tolerates Maggie but prefers being the only one...Maggie on the other hand loves snuggling with Rosie and seems very close to her. The puppy loves being with the older dog...the older dog prefers being your one and only! I love having both dogs as they are different...do it for you not your other dog.
We added another sheepie puppy when Baley was 2. Baley was very accepting of Baxter and they got along great from the beginning. Although I work from home--I do travel a lot and they seem to keep each other company and enjoy each other when I am gone. Before we got Baxter--Baley would stay rather aloof when I returned from a trip--he seemed lonely. That doesn't happen anymore--they are great buds! :D :D
We originally rescued Lola to be a companion for Lily. It was a perfect success. They are inseparable. They were both under a year old though. Lily was so playful she was harassing the heck out of the poodle and yorkie. Lola and she have a matched level of energy. They play ALL day. Now I can't imagine life without Lola. She is my love.

I added Henry as a playmate for my 4 year old Maggie. It is fabulous. They play nonstop. You have to be willing to tolerate alot of chasing and wrestling and play noise. Of course, I thought having a puppy would be lovely but my main goal was to entertain Maggie and it is working out beautifully.

Isn't THAT the truth!

What a lovely video. The ending was very heartwarming!
i get tired just watching my bozos play all day
^^

 So true...

My new pup loves his fursis (who is about 5). It's taken a full year and now I can tell she likes him a lot too. I think it's a great idea because I know it makes one of mine feel more comfortable when we're gone. Bad side is, if the older one goes somewhere w/o the pup, all hell breaks loose w/the puppy. He totally misses her. The older one considers it a vacation when the pup goes somewhere. ;)
Max was five when Sammy joined our family. He was napping all day and being a couch potato. Sammy gave him a new lease in life. They played all day long despite the difference in size. They were loving companions for ten years. Max missed her so much when Sammy passed and took him about a month before he realized he now has all the attention. But sometimes I find him lying on her bed which he has never done before. I think he feels closer to her when he does that.

At the end when they both look back at the camera is tooooo cute!
At the end of the video its like....'Lola...look, careful, we're being watched.'
I just adore them both. Thanks so much for the kind comments!
