Jumping revisited

OK, now that the Advil has finally kicked in (headache from too much :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: ? ) I happened to come across two pictures that sort of illustrate what I was talking about in terms of the correct take-off point and Sybil's propensity to take off too early on the spreads (it's a confidence issue that should get better with experience, but handler can also affect a dog's jumping)

These happen to be from a trial. One day. Miraculously she never took a bar down, but I happened to notice she was jumping early quite a bit the more excited she got and the photographer confirmed it with her pictures (photographer: Patti Pendler)

This is what happens when the dog takes off too early: notice how she's already descending over the farthest bar on the double. The apex of the jump arc should have been midway between the two bars. In this case it was most likely over the first bar. She cleared the second one, but her timing was off. What happens is to get over the second bar she ends up having to overjump (her height at the apex of the jump curve was probably much higher than it would have had to be if she had taken off at a proper distance in order for her not to take down the second bar )

Image

Here, too, she's probably overjumping a bit, but her takeoff was timed a bit better. Less cause for the handler to experience heart failure at any rate

Looking at these pics really brings it home to me how important it is that the dog be a smart, confident jumper. I like the fact that she really cares about keeping the bars up, but we've still got more work to do before she becomes a truly confident jumper.

Looks like all the :headbang: paid off.

You are actually able to see how she is doing. Very nice pictorial.

I need a personal photographer with me to capture our problems.
That's amazing... love the pics....

Videographer is better. Mine only seems to be able to capture the tail end of our runs... She's getting there though

You need a trialing buddy to help you keep your sense of humor. Ideally one who isn't running in your jump height. And who will tape you so you can go back and see what you're doing.

One day after I had been trialing Belle for some time I was home sick. Not deathly ill, just enough so I stayed home but needed something non strenuous to do to keep me out of trouble. I rustled up all of the video I had of Belle's runs to date and sat down to watch them. Then I watched them again. Then I walked over to Belle and apologized to her. That was maybe 6 or so years ago? I still apologize to her daily. And she's been retired for several years.

I am not apologizing to Harry.
Cool pictures!
Amazing she made that 1st one - lots of extra "oomph!" to pull that one off.

Ahh, I just love jump pictures....dogs, horses, even humans.... :D But especially the mechanics of the 4 legged jumping.

OK, we're starting a pool: date and time when Judi retracts that statement and decides to apologize to Harry?

Person closest wins a....? Dawn, what do you suggest?

Kristine
I have been told I need to apologize to Marley - constantly by my instructor. Her other favorite saying is "that dog just gave you a gift, she had no clear idea what you wanted her to do and managed to pull it off anyway"

My problem is she gets too close to the jump and then takes off when she is frustrated with me, or tired, or stressed. well you get the picture (even without the emoticons which don't seem to want to work for me today)

Well, there is that. Though I suppose we can put a statue of limitation in it. Harry is what, 4? If she hasn't apologized to him by 1 pm October 29, 2015, Kerry (and whomever else picks never) wins (splits) whatever it is we haven't decided the prize is yet

hmmmmm :lmt:

I'm guessing sooner rather than later.
March 15th, 2010. 9pm.

The prize?? I think dinner out, paid for by Judy sounds fantastic! :D

------ before Nationals next year??? I would say a DVD of Judi apologizing to Harry would be a pretty good prize. :D
Oh, boy! I don't think there's an emoticon cranky enough to cover Judi's reaction to my proposed pool, and especially not if we suggest she needs to pay for the prize either in terms of dinner or a public apology to Harry on top of that!

Stephanie, you need to pick a specific date.

My inclination is some time after the next national, but are we talking days, months, years...? :lmt: on that and the prize both.

And I'll try to narrow down a date as well. National next year starts September 20th or thereabouts. Agility is on the 21st.

September 21st 2010, 6:47am - Another suggestion for a prize should be dinner at Gian Tony's on the Hill with a screening of the apology DVD.

I do believe the Nationals start next year on or about the 19th - with herding  WHich reminds me - I have something to send you but my gmail is down. I may try to cut and paste into a pm.
