This is why we can't have nice things!

Ok, I know I'm not the only one in the "can't have nice things due to our dogs" category, so let's hear your stories.

Yesterday Dave and I went to Target to buy a $7 plastic trash can to place under our sink. This trash can is replacing our $100 stainless steel trash can that holds a ton of garbage and has a motion sensor that automatically opens the lid. It was a wedding gift and I loved it as much as any sane person could love a garbage can. Unfortunately after 3 strikes we realized Rudie and our beautiful garbage can cannot coexist and the can is too big to fit under the sink. Sigh.

I also preemptively purchased a $29 acrylic Ikea rug when we moved last May. I wanted a $130 very nice light gray rug, but after our last ivory rug became a magnet for dog urine and vomit I opted for an ugly rug that won't make me flinch if it gets ruined. I clearly made the right decision as everytime Rudie has to puke he goes straight to the rug.

It is weird Langley likes to chew on certain spots on the couch and obsesses over it especially if I tell him no. Funny thing is if I leave them alone he doesn't touch it; actually he leaves everything alone. Only once did I find him with something recently and that was duct tape. I come to realize my bedroom door doesn't click shut and he learned how to push it open and it isn't a doggie proof room. Have to fix that! or the door.
We have dogs - ours, family's, fosters and now new puppy Biscuit. I constantly remind myself why I don't have new carpet or furniture.......

Mine are NOT destructive dogs, but the odd accident happens (puppy potty training AGAIN  ) and dirty feet, the odd puke or diarrhea attack......

And the cat leaves quite a bit of white hair on the couches as well!
I have often wondered outloud why it is that my dogs and cats all make a bee line for the one rug. A nice light straw color when they need to puke. 8O

DH says its because they dont want puke on their feet and it bounces and splatters when it hits the tile.

OK enough I'm having my breakfast.
We are udating a few things around the house that we didn't do when it was built. One large item on the list was a new entry door. Something nice to replace the nasty steel monster the builder installed.

So there I am in Lowe's talking to the guy about my door needs and bottom line, the door that will fit my requirements will cost around $2000. 8O 8O 8O It's not gold plated, no side lights, nothing, just a simple Pella fibergalss door with 3/4 glass. Who knew doors were this expensive!

So after the initial shock wears off, I look at the sample door and notice a rub mark which leads the conversation to how well will it stand up to 3 sheepdogs. Now my guys aren't that bad at the door, but stuff can happen when a ball or toy comes into play and I don't want it to happen to a $2000 door. So the Lowes guy tells me I will have to train my dogs to stay away from the door, no scratching to go out (which they don't do), no body slamming as they all run for the car at the same time (it's a clip from the three stooges).

So, do I get my new door and start doogy door manners training again? Or do I stay with the craptacular steel monster that is in place. I must say the current door doesn't look beat up after 4 years of acting as the stooges bottleneck.

Am I crazed for thinking I can have dogs and something nice too?
We've slowly but surely just been making things more dog/human friendly. We redid the whole bathroom just so Bear could sleep in it and not make it super gross. We retiled everything, put in darker grout and even put a few plexiglass pieces on the wall so when he lays his head against it, he won't get the wall wet and make holes like the last time. Now, hopefully, the bathroom will stay in good condition.

Heather, I know I've suggested these before but I really love those FLOR carpet tiles. They really easy to clean (you just take out the one that was peed or puked on and put it back when it dries) and if one gets too bad, you just replace it. The ones we use as our area rug in the living room has really lasted.
I feel your pain.. Just today I was at Pottery Barn drooling over those cane boxes and my husband reminded me that the sheepies will chew them apart. :(

Ive lost many pointy flats, expensive eye glasses and ruined rugs over years and ive grown to accept that I cannot have pretty things without thinking they'd ruin them. :)

I have the Flor rug too and theyre so chic. Theyre much bigger and prettier in person. I love that its plastic underneath - easy to clean. I have them in Camellia and needlepoint - laurel. Pictures dont do them justice.
Nice thing about older dogs, they aren't as destructive.....except....to the doors. A few scratches here and there.....I'm at a quandry on how to fix the interior doors since they are the cheap luan doors. The front storm door is held together by duct tape and has no latch except a locking mechanism which is barely working. Nothing like dogs slamming the door to be let out. The back sliding screen door is frozen in place what with the bow out from Glacier's break in 2 summers ago.

Oh yeah, the "new" hall carpet didn't hold up near as well as the salesman promised (of course they lie)......beige Berber, never again! But I found four 4x6' throw rugs that pretty much cover all the barf stains and pull outs from dogs digging a nest in the carpet.

Kitchen cabinets show some dog wear but they are cheap cabinets to start. The walls get regular washing thanks to the guys' early morning rub down the walls.

Being older dogs doesn't mean the house is dog proof.......since they are older I know someday we'll be facing the opposite of house training, senior dog incontinence issues. Been there, done that before.
I just looked at these Flor rugs and I love them! Do they stick to the floor?

We rent so luckily the dogs aren't destructive, no chewing or scratching at the door. The walls are black at Rudie's level though since he likes to rub his whole body against them... nothing a coat of paint wont fix though!

No, they only stick to each other so no damage to existing floors. They come with these adhesive dots that you use to attach them to each other. They're rubber backed, too, so they don't slide. They've worked out really great for us. They even survived house training with Owen!
Our guys aren't intentionally destructive- but I wonder how it would look if I covered all the walls and ceilings with plexiglass for the Newfie drool????????????????
Mine don't destroy anything other than snitching from your plate when your back is turned. Asterisk will put her head right next to your plate... Wendel will lean in an snatch up your food if you don't watch.
I miss house plants! I used to love having them up corners ...floor level. Cant do that now dogs seem to think they are herb gardens!! The only other thing all my tea towels, and hand towels have holes in as they think it is great to steal them and play tug...I have given up now xx
ok i can top you all .. i went a bought a very nice quilt for my bed of couse since a pup dreamer has been sleeping on the bed .. he has never even a pup had an accident in the house ok see where i am going sleeping soundly 4am dreamer sleeping on his back and then i heard like a nice fountan noise yep dreamer in his sleep on his back p----------------ing he did not even know he was doing it .. there goes my nice new bedding nothing more fun then top strip the bed down in the middle of the nite
New house or New rug always means diarrhea or piss. Guaranteed. The more expensive, the more you're asking for diarrhea.

If it ain't coming out of their private parts, they suffer from their oil and paws running on it within a few years anyway. Reason why we wanted all tile at the new house, and now our knees and back suffer.
Barney isn't too destructive overall, but he LOVES to run alongside the walls and he also loves to scratch the side of his mouth on wall corners, which is super gross.
WOOOOHOOOO finally I get to give Chauncey an "at a boy". He is actually very house friendly, other than snatching an occasional dish cloth.
:yay: :hearts: :hearts: :roses:
