Hi From Diana in Louisiana

Hi my name is Diana I'm a 47yr old mom, grandmother, sheepie mom and I'm a full time trainer at the Petsmart in Bossier City, Louisiana.

I just recently adopted my first Sheepie from a family that had her for 6 years and then decided they didn't "want" her anymore. (I've done rescue for years). My old girl is a DREAM.

We do have a few Minor issues to work on, she had never been walked on a leash and really had no real socialization or training, but shes been going with me to work and is doing fantastic! She LOVES to learn, all i have to do is get the clicker and she is all attention. In no time she has learned sit, down, leave it, stay. We are still working on walking nicely but she is getting there. She is FANTASTIC with people and other pets and has already become something of a celebrity in our area. My pet Parents regually ask about her if she isn't at work with me.

She is SUCH a gentle giant and I adore her so much. I know that I probably won't have her but maybe for a few years, however I'm wanting to learn as much about this breed as I can because if she is typical of the breed I know for a fact I will have another I'd love to have a YOUNG rescue (only so I'll have them for awhile) but me who thought she would never ever buy a puppy would also be interesed in finding a really really good breeder. So I you know of a good source of info for me please pass it on. I'm looking for anything on this breed from grooming (although I think I have a great groomer), to diet (I'd love info on raw diet for this breed, to just everyday "stuff"...I look forward to hearing about other Sheepies!
Thanks,
Diana

Welcome from NC...you will get wonderful advice on here!
In fact weekends are generally slower on here as alot of
folks are out working their sheepies! 8)

As we are on our way out the door, I will check in later
BUT, just wanted to let you know that most of the sheepies
we have had have lived to be the 12-14 y/o range.
Their life span is alot longer than people expect.

Look forward to many happy stories!
Kathy
Welcome to the community!
Welcome, Diana! And congratulations - you're hooked!!

Kathy's right - sheepies' lifespan can be far longer than "normal." My first sheepie was just shy of his 16th birthday when we lost him, and my second one was just shy of her 15th.
Hi Diana
Welcome from Mim and Tiggy in Australia.
I just got my first sheepie puppy last April and I'm addicted to them too.
Like you I'm already thinking about having more sheepies in the future.
This forum is great for good info on everything sheepie. :D
Welcome Diana :D

There are several members here who feed raw, and they do wonderful on it. If feeding raw is something you do (or want to get started with), it would be a good choice.

How much hair does your girl have now? That would determine grooming recommendations. Members here go full coated to shaved and fuzzy, and everything in between.
Welcome! :D
Welcome from Atlanta! I can say one thing about sheepies in southern climates; unless your new pal is going to be a mostly indoor girl, then I'd consider doing a summer "puppy cut". Its not a full shave down ( take the hair too short and they can get sunburned) but a 1 or 2 inch length that makes the summer heat MUCH more tolerant. I had my first sheepdogs when I lived in the northeast, so we never cut them down. But our first summer here in Atlanta with my sheepdog pups, and a brush with heat exhaustion easily changed my mind.

We do a shave down in June (right after Sheepie Palooza... I'm sure you'll read more about that soon enough!) and then spend the rest of the year growing them out. By the time the weather begins to get cool, they have a nice looking coat going, and love playing out in the cold!

WELCOME!!!!
Welcome from Germany
Welcome fro Upside down land. :D
:D Welcome from Canadian cowboy country! I'm just getting back to reading forum news after a break over the summer due to gardening, work and vacation travel!

I have one OES, Willoughby who is 4 1/2 years old and two cats, Edwina, 12 1/2(Maine Coon) and Percival, (who knows?) willoughby is sometimes r4eferred to as "the baby" as he's the youngest of my companions.
Hi & welcome from Maryland...please post pictures of your new sheepie girl.

Welcome from Tennessee--you will learn a lot on this forum! What is your sheepie girl's name?
Welcome from Texas.
I want to thank everyone for the great info and huge welcome. I have learned that Sheepies live alot longer than I expected...working in rescue I was just used to the larger breeds not being around for long and expected the same! Bless her heart I just found out my younger son has enlisted, his cousin was killed last May while on active duty, at the same time my brother was stationed "down range" in Afganistan. I'm so proud of him, but I"M JUST NOT READY YET. Anyway I was sitting here all weepy and Roxie came and laid her head in my lap and looked up at me with those beautul eyes. I was telling her, you have to live to be the oldest Sheepie ever I just can't loose you too, promise me you'll be the oldest and healthiest ever. She lick me and stare at me I swear she was saying...."ok mom, it's ok...I don't know what you want but I promise I'll try it's ok" gotta love it.

Roxie Is 6 years old...soon to be 7. She was clipped down for the summer, right now her coat is about 2 inches long (when I pull it up to measure) She really is an inside dog, unless she tells me she want's to go out it's outside potty then it's right back in. So I'm really thinking about letting her grow out, but I live in Louisiana and I'm just not sure how that will go for this summer. How fast does their coat normally grow? of I guess a better question would be how long until she'll have a long coat again?

I dont' have any pictures taken yet but I'll post some soon!
Diana
