Kids or Dogs? Who gets the honor....

As it says under my username, I just can't make decisions. During the holidays I sit in every aisle FOREVER because I can never decide what to get and a 10 min. trip takes over an hour.

Anyway, I was thinking for Christmas, I'd get mr. j personalized plates since he's talked about wanting some for a long time. Assuming it's something easy that I can do...

Back in the day, we were going to get something Yuki or OES related. He loves loves loves his girl. Now that we have kids, I was thinking Dadto3. I also don't place our dogs as high up on the priority list as I think Mr. J still does, so that's why I'm not sure I'm thinking clearly.

(FTR, I say that b/c now that we have kids... my priorities have completely changed and my world evolves around them while before it was just dog dog dogs)

I can't figure out what he may want.
I keep thinking if I get him an OES plate, his family and maybe him will be sitting there wondering why I didn't get something kid related. I mean, he IS a proud father.

On the other hand, if I get Dadto3, he may wonder why I didn't get something OES related since that's what we talked about (again, this was a few years ago), and he loves his dog. ...and maybe something kid related is cheesy?

What would you do if you were in my shoes? My shoes being 3 very young kids and 2 dogs. The 2 cats don't count to my husband.

Also, I'd love to hear some ideas for kid or dog suggestions for a license plate. OESLUV and pretty much OES related was available when I checked, as is the Dadto3. ( ...and yes 3 is all we're having)

What's your letter limit? There must be way to incorporate both.
DADTO5

oeskds

Yukis

:lmt:
How many letters can you have? :?
six

i'm not sure there's a way to incorporate both w/o making what you choose confusing? I want him to have a cool plate whether it's dogs or kids related.
OESORG ?
FLHOUS

full house(cards) = 3 kids + 2 dogs

or my german-ness would make it FLHAUS

Is Mr J a poker player , if so full house sounds great
I like Dadto5 as well!
I'm now thinking I should just try to get 2? Still doing a kid one but putting the OES one on mine. He drives both cars more than me anyway. I can't get anywhere without a driver! I have at least 10+ sheets of paper in my car with directions to my favorite places ...like turn L at the mcdonalds and R when you see a rainbow b/c I have no idea how to follow normal map directions.

forget the license plate and buy yourself a GPS. :P
I have the animal friendly plates here in Texas. Can you get those personalized? Then that would be the best of both worlds.
That's the one I was looking at getting personalized since I don't see an option for a normal kind.

When I followed the link, and clicked on personalized plates for passenger cars and trucks, it only showed a plain plate. I assume the "regular" one - With TEXAS across the top, and The Lone Star State across the botom. and a plain white background.

If you only get one plate then I have to agree that DADTO5 is the best choice. If you get 2 and choose one for the 2 footer kids and one for the 4 footer kids then you're on your own.

Now as to your paper directions explosion in the car! There is a neat little device to sort that out and get you where you want. Its called a GPS. It provides maps, turn by turn instructions, distance to next turn..... Everything you need to never get lost (as long as your destination is on the database and most are). I got one last December and it has been worth it's weight in gold and then some. Once you get your favourite address and locations entered tey are exceedingly quick and easy to use. Even without the favourites entered keying in your destination address is quick and easy. I keep it in th car all the time, even when I know where I am going. I like the virtual dashboard it has, it's independant speedometer and trip clock functions all of which is useful to me.

Good luck

Thanks and Cheers

Carl
No suggestion for you-- but mine says :

1BUCKIE

I also got one last December and was told how wonderful it will be [even though I told mr. j I DID NOT want one]. I still don't trust it, and the only person who uses it is HIM. Otherwise, it just sits under my seat hidden.

...and you know what, half the time, it has us going the wrong way, ,and that to me is not trustworthy. Having my husband take me somewhere 10 times before I write my written instructions is more reliable :) Granted, one time I did have a road block that left me totally lost even though the guy told me what I had to do to get back on track, but that's when my phone with a whole list of friends came handy. Thankfully they knew where the blue sign with the dead skunk on the road was... b/c that's all I knew. ;)

I always get told by the other half I need to learn how to read a map, and and while I agree... I am thankful I already have two boys that know how to get home better than me. The 3 yo says "you kill me mom" when I went the wrong way to his school, and the younger one says "bubbles" when we're approaching the road home (that has a waterfall with bubbles).

One day, I'll learn...
Of course you could resist the whole vanity thingy altogether and put the savings into college funds to really honor your children.

Yeah casue that $80 (in NY) will pay for something like a 5th of a textbook

Grandparents put in 2K a year for each child, his work starts us off with a nice chunk, and we put in 1.5K a year for each of them, so I think I have a few extra bucks to spare for a nice gift for my husband. ;) We definitely don't plan on paying for ALL of their college, but I also know we put in more than the average family.
My Dad has tried a couple different GPS systems and none of them work well in both Canada and the US. He's constantly making trips to Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, some place in Colorado that I can't remember the name of, Littleton I think? Anyway apparently they all stop functioning correctly when you hit the border.
Re the plates... I would go with something herding related maybe? That kind of works for both kids and dogs

EXCELLENT! Then perhaps for your own retirement!
(Then again, a college education at a top notch university will require at least $10,000 per year from birth through 18. Each.)
I just put that into a spreadsheet to figure it out and jeeeeesus, that's a lot.
And a lot more than I expected.

$160 per year for 30 years with 5% annual interest compounded annually turns out to be just over $5,000!
That's a REALLY nice retirement present! :D :D :D

Look, I'm only half serious -- I have a vanity plate as well. Just thought I'd throw out the suggestion (and the numbers). ;)

I have a Garmin that works in both places but I have to be in Canada or halfway over the bridge to program it. Once I save a Canadian address I can use it from any US starting point. I do have to update though since the Red River Parkway (I think that's what it is) doesn't show up.

I understand your map issue completely, having just come back from Texas and getting lost on every single trip I attempted while I was there - I never got lost like that in my whole life. Half the roads I needed to find weren't even marked, and we all know that I90N becomes I90 E without even having to change lanes. Maybe it's not you - It's Texas

.......and yes, we had 2 GPS with us, one for me, one for my sister. Driving in Texas reduced my sister to tears and after the second day she refused to do it, so I was stuck with it

Why not get 'DADTO3' for the plate and get the biggest OES decals you can find for the back window, or an OES plate holder? That way you've got it all covered. I decided not to give NYS their exorbitant $80 fee for a vanity plate (they get enough of my money as it is) and went with the 'Proud Air Force Mom' plate holder, and the OES decals proudly displayed on the windows. Works for me.
