double speuter

The time has come. We took in our babies, Jack and Annabelle, this morning for their spay and neuter. I know in my head this is a good thing, but I still very much wanted a baby from them. Ashlan has taken the news of them never having puppies the hardest, but the news of kittens on the way helped. I have family members and well meaning friends all telling me, the dogs are fine to be bred, just go ahead. I have tried at length to explain why we decided against breeding, but they just stare at me with no clue.
The vet said they would call us around 4pm to let us know how they are doing. Did I say I am a nervous wreck? :? They will come home between 6-8pm tonight. I felt awful just leaving them there.
Thanks for letting me whine to all of you. LOL I will let you know how my babies are soon.

Clyde is going on Friday for his neuter. I'm a little nervous too so let us know how everything goes. I resuced my other dog and she'd been spayed so young that the shelter couldn't tell that she had been. Long story short, I took her to get spayed and we found out it was unnecessary. As an adult dog, she did not recover quickly and was quite uncomfortable for over a week. I know it won't be the same with Clyde but my experience hasn't exactly been positive.
Hi Stormi,

Just a short note of support. Its not easy leaving your pets,
its only natural to be nervous. Its a fairly short recovery period,
so they will be back to themselves soon...
We wish them both well and a speedy recovery !!!
We will keep them in our thoughts today....
Hi Stormi!

You took the right choice. We also wanted a baby from Lennon in a later time, and I would have loved a baby from Jack and Annabelle.

Danita and I made a 180 degrees turn after we adopted Sofa and Frida. They were so abused and neglected that we swore ourselves we would never breed a dog. It's would be awesome to have a grandpuppy, but then you start wondering what homes will you be placing the rest of the litter, and just thinking that a puppy we put in a home ended up neglected or abused was enough for us. Also, after seeing how stressed Sofa got when we picked up her baby chiken, I would not have the hearth to take away her puppies to give them to someone else, no matter how much they would love them. Sofa would never forgive me for doing that.

We also have well meaning friends who are displeased with us for "Taking away the joy of parenthood" from our dogs, and no explanation seems to make them understand that it's for the best, so you're not alone.

Danita is also a nervous wreck every time they have to be at the vet for anything serious (And me too, I'll admit it, but only one person is allowed to go crazy at the time). Your babies will be just fine, the recovery time sometimes is really short, your babies will be running and romping in no time, you'll see.

We wish them a speedy recovery!!
Hi Stormi!

Big hugs!!!! I know it was a tough decision for you to speuter the OES kids. Chin up- your foundation dogs are out there, and they'll find you when the time is right. I'm sure all will go ok with Jack and Annie! Try to keep yourself busy in the meantime.

So- which kitty is preggers now? What colors are you expecting? Details? How're you doing in the shows- (is it working? are you distracted yet?)

Karen :)
Aw, Stormi, hang in there! 8) I'm sure Jack and Annabelle will be just fine. A bit groggy tonight and a bit uncomfortable for a few days, but they will amaze you at how fast they bounce back! Will they have to wear the conehead collars?

I know how nervous you must feel right now with them being away from you, but you can rest assured that you made the right decision for them. You will have your breeding stock someday, right now just concentrate on those kitties!

Hugs,
Chris
Hang in there. They will be back and doing the doggie 500 in no time.

Ask the vet about what to do if Jack or Annie are into over-grooming. Abbi is a big Over-groomer. She licks herself like a cat. When she was spayed she licked the stiches so diligently they bled and absessed. I had to put ointment on them every couple of hours. Ended up putting the ointment on first and bitters on the outer area just to get her to stop. Had to take her for lots of walks to keep her busy the first week too. Vet said to let her rest, but she wouldn't leave the stiches alone! Drove me crazy the first 10 days. I must have bought her 5 new toys to play with, and she tore two of them within a few hours. I don't think she liked getting spayed much.

My vet told me that it wasn't usually such an ordeal, but Abbi just was too persistent. Maybe with two dogs they will not even think about it much? I know as long as she was busy, she left the area alone.

That was about 5 years ago. About 2 years ago the vet put Abbi on Proin for bladder dysfunction. Seems when large female dogs are spayed their bladder muscles give out in a few years and they need Proin as a hormone type replacement to tone up their bladder muscles. Wish I had known that before I had her spayed at a year old. I might have waited until she was two or so ..., but it was nice to not worry about the mess. Maybe there's some type of muscle exercise you could teach your aging female dogs  . I guess just keeping them up on the basic tricks is hard enough.

Good luck. Regrets don't help much, but hugging your puppies is a fantastic stress reducer! :D
Hi Stormi!

I'll be keeping Jack & Annabelle in my thoughts today, too. Know you're not alone in being a nervous wreck when your baby is at the vet's office without you. I'm the same way...calling constantly to check on them.

I hope they have a speedy recovery! Big Sheepie Hugs to you all!!
We will keep you and your pups in our prayers. I think you made the right decision.

Our vet offered a "pain shot" that lasts for 3 days. While it kept Abby pain free it also kept her from feeling the natural limitations one would feel recovering from surgery and she pulled a couple of stitches by "thinking" she was okay.

Congratulations on the impending kitty stork visit. Keep us posted!
Yes for bladder exercises. I remember someone posting to another list they put hurdles just outside the dog door so the dog had to make several jumps coming and going thru the door. The owner felt this jumping exercised different muscles than just running and helped with the bladder. It would be interesting to see if agility dogs leak........I dout it.

Not all females get leaky after surgery. I have had an extreme wet butt who ended up wearing diapers and others who remained dry until their natural end....so it will vary with the dog, er, bitch.

Hope the patients are well and the girl is staying away from her stitiches.
dougal is going on friday to be neutered. I had thought about breeding with him but I look around and see so many unwanted animals. I know we have made the right decision.
luv Pepe
Thank you for your decision. Unless the dog will benefit the genetic pool, it's best not to breed. Too many people, both in the show ring and out, put their own intersts before the breed.

I'm not saying only show dogs should be bred. If a "pet" is certified healthy: hips, eys, hearing, thryoid, etc......and the breeders assume responsiblity for any pups produced (taking back pups that don't work out with the adopting family for example), then I say breed....with discretion.

(of course there's much more I could write on this.......but let's skip it)

As for too many dogs........indeed there are!
Hi Stormi-
How are Jack and Annabelle doing ??
You, CJ and the kids must be feeling the house is empty without Jack and Annie!
I'm sure they'll do fine, and be back to normal in no time!
*hugs*
YAY!!! The vet called and both Jack and Annabelle are doing well. We can go pick them up in just a couple of hours. I don't know if they are giving us the cones yet to prevent the licking. I guess it would be a good thing to have just in case. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders for a few different reasons. For one, they made it through with flying colors, you can't beat that. :D Secondly, it was coming close to Annabelle's next heat, we were always very careful with her to make sure she didn't get pregnant, but it is now something we don't have to stress for 3 weeks about. I wonder if Jack will act any different, he had never shown any aggression or what others would consider "whole male" tendencies, so I am curious to see if there will be a change in him.

I appreciate everyone's support, it helped me go through the day. Aginright, it made my day seeing your post. I hope you and all your girls and Rootbeer are doing well.

I will post more in a few hours, when I get them home. :D
Thanks again,
Stormi and (the not so whole sheepies, but still perfect in every way)
Stacey,

You wouldn't believe how quiet the house is. 8O And just to think, I blame the kids for all the noise. LOL The cats have all been sleeping, but just a couple of hours ago woke up and decided to try out for the circus acrobats. "Catrobats" Hahaha!!! They decided Mom was worried, so why not make up for some of the sheepie noise being gone.
I will be glad when they are home and back to normal. The sheepie 500 will be up and going again in a few days and I will feel much better.

Stormi and co.
I hear tell they make a cervical collar similar to ones designed for human use (if not identical but larger), that limit the dog's ability to curl around to lick, but aren't a cone, so they don't stick out, cause the dog hearing issues, nor wall/furniture damage.

I've enver seen a dog using one. I've seen others on the net that look like a giant pillow with a hole in the middle for the head, but again, I've not seen them in use.
Stormi,

Don't forget your dogs will feel sick from the anesthesia. Don't feed them until tomorrow and give them a little water. It's very much likely that they will throw up everything they eat and drink, so it's better to keep it at a minimum.

Probably most of the male attitude will remain on Jack. Most of those things are learned, and even with neutering they may not go away. That happened to Lennon, I taught him to be very territorial to protect Danita (We used to live in a bad neighborhood) and he's still like that at home. Outside he's an angel, but since that's taught behabiour, it just calms down with the decrement in hormone levels.

It's great to hear they are OK now! You'll see they recover pretty quick.
Stormi-
That's great news, wishing Jack and Annabelle a speedy
recovery !!!
We are home!! :D They are both very tired and they said Annabelle was sick, but she hasn't been since we picked her up. I was so happy when they brought them out to us. It was like a weight was lifted off. They did not give us any collars and so far they are not licking or chewing. I am sure that will come when the anesthesia wears off a little more. CJ is off on vacation and of course I am always home, so we can supervise them very easily.
Jack doesn't have to go back since his stitches absorb, but Annie goes back in 7-10 days to have hers removed.

We still hope to breed someday, but I am not in any rush to jump back into it. I want to spend time continuing researching OES genetics and breeding and one day in our future will breed OES. I am still a little sad that it couldn't be Jack and Annabelle, but it is also nice that we have 2 healthy pets that will give us a lifetime of joy.

Thanks again for everyone's well wishes, they meant the world to me on this nervous day.

Karen~

We should be expecting kittens at the end of April, and blue and seal colors, with mitted and bicolor patterns. Showing is a lot different in cats, and it is really just a vacation to go see your friends and chat....LOL Kiara will be entered in the kitten class and my fingers are crossed for her to do well. Other ragdoll show people say she will do great. I am waiting for 2 kittens from the same breeder, but different lines. We are just waiting to see if the kittens are show quality. I am excited!! Thanks for asking, as you can tell I can ramble on and on. LOL

Stormi and co.
Stormi,
So glad to hear Jack and Annabelle are home and on the mend! And how cute is that that CJ took vacation so he could stay home and help you care for the patients! Gotta love him!
Chris
Fantastic! Give them both a hug from us. We are doing fine. Had a few setbacks this last year, but it's full steam ahead from now on.

All of the pups look so cute. It was good to see so many folks still here. We must really love our dogs? I need to get some new photos of Abbi ... she has developed some new habits that keep us rolling in the aisles.

She's taught RootBeer to fetch for her! No kidding. I throw the toy, ball, treat -- Root Beer retrieves it, usually from the air; then as he heads back Abbi takes it away from him and delivers it to me. Then sits to wait for him to go get it again.

Our dogs are just perfect. Little alterations are just a bump in the road. Jack and Annabelle will not even give this a second thought in a month!
Spaying and neutoring is never a wrong decision. I just wish Abbi didn't have to take meds continuously. I only give her a pill every other day and it seems to work, but if I forget a day, we have a small Lake Conroe under the table. And she doesn't seem to even notice, sigh.
Despite what I wrote earlier, Abbi's stiches healed in 10 days. I mean it wasn't lthat big of an ordeal; I just worried about her getting infected or something.
Bothered me more than her. Doesn't it always.
Good Luck to Dougal.
There does seem to be more than enough dogs to go around.
That's one of the reasons Abbi was neutored as soon as possible. A lab I owned was impregnated despite a 6 foot fence and being locked in a storage hut (with windows open ---) while I was at work. A pit bull dog dug under the fence and climbed in through the window, where I found him sleeping with my Ruth! Ruth seemed happy, but 8 puupies later I wasn't. Wish I had known what I know now!
All of my dogs since get spayed or neutored as soon as possible. Only way to go.
Abbi loves to jump. Maybe I should incorporate jumps with our walks. Couldn't hurt either of us.
pleased Jack and annabelle are okay. funny how it affects us more. Dougal goes most places with me during the day. Its like my right arms been cut off when he,s not there. He chats away gets under my feet wants to play all day. At the moment he is playing with Steve up and down stairs generally wanting all our attention.
luv pepe
Hi Stormi,
How are things going at the home post op unit ?
Hope all is well, and your sheepie patients are resting
comfortably (and not disturbing the sutures).
I did not get a wink of sleep the first night postop,
how are you doing ? Things went much better after the first night
I'm happy to say ! Just make sure they keep the incision line
dry and they don't disturb it. Use the leash to prevent them
from racing around. Its amazing how quickly they recover
and get up to full speed again !!!

Wishing Jack and Annabelle the best !!
I stayed up until 3am with them, but they didn't budge. With the exception of one more throw up from Annie. They have slept all day and are both walking slow and carefully. They haven't ate much, but have gotten up to get frequent drinks of water. They are leaving their stitches alone for the most part, we more have to worry about Annie cleaning Jack and Jack cleaning Annie. That has really been the most difficult. This late afternoon, Jack is starting to walk around a little more and become more attatched at the hip, but Annabelle is still down and out. I feel bad for them both, but I know in a couple more days it will be like it never happened.
Joey got scared when he saw Annabelle's incision, it is about 3 1/2-4 inches long and does look very painful. We have had to keep Joey away, because he wants to lay next to them and love them, but at 4 year old, it is more like roll around, give them a hug, roll around some more, and while Jack and Annie didn't seem to mind, we let them have some peace.
Thanks for caring!! :D I will keep everyone updated as to when the spunky nature returns. LOL

Stormi and co.
It's great to hear they are doing OK, it's just a matter of waiting, your guys will be up and running in no time!
