Ear Calamity!!!

:( I found a swelling in Willoughby's right ear and decided it must be a haematoma. He had an ear infection about a month ago which had cleared up. We went to the vet this PM and he does indeed have a haematoma. 8O He has to have it drained tomorrow AM under anaesthesia and then the ear has to be stitched together. It sounds gruesome!!! The only positive thing is that he likes the vet we saw today. He growls at the other one who seems perfectly nice to me. Sigh!!! :crossed:

Newer thinking is not to drain and stitch, but to let it run its course. Sausage ear can last awhile. Hope your case heals quickly, some of mine have, Paige always drive the vet crazy with her ear.
good luck with tomorrow
:crossed: :crossed: that things go well for Willoughby tomorrow!

Hope all goes well and Willoughby gets better fast.
My first sheepie had this surgery. He came home looking like a wounded soldier, head and ear wrapped. But he healed and was fine. Hope all goes well. I think it looks worse than it really is. Hope he fels okay and gets better soon!

Thanks!
:( This has been a traumatic experience for Willoughby. He hates the cone! He slept most of the first two days after, but woke up long enough to have diarrhea on the downstairs carpet! He's on Metacam for pain and to reduce swelling. I have put him on a rice and chicken diet until he's finished the Metacam. He's not happy, bumping into everything but managing to get up and down stairs with help. I have to hold the cone up or he stops. He's supposed to keep the cone for three weeks! 8O I wil try a short walk tomorrow to see how he manages. I have pictures. :?
Oh they do get frustrated! And so will you what with shin scrapes, wall scrapes, bouncing off doors......argh!

There is a soft cone available at PetCo, problem is if he's of any size they probably don't carry the size needed. It's padded, still restricts his site, movement but doesn't hurt you when he runs into you. In some situations you can reverse it, wearing over the shoulder.......but not for ear work. He has to keep his paws off that ear.

Also in some cases you can cut a portion out of the bottom to aid with eating and drinking. Once again, depends on what you are protecting, sometime you can't make the notch.

You both will survive, maybe not your carpet though.
We have the Comfy cone from pet Co. We loved it! My dog is a big guy and they did ahve the size we needed. However, if you need to order one, you can get them on line. Just search "comfy cone". I did not like the doughnut kind. I think its called the bite not collar or something. Didn't work for us. Nor did the blow up type from petco. If you need to keep on for thatr amount of time, I would strongly suggest you look into the comfy cone.

Sorry to hear he is having such a hard time. Did they prescribe any pain meds or something to keep him a bit calm while he heals?

The chicken and rice sounds like a good idea. I used one tablet of Pepcid Ac about half and hour to an hour before meals to coat the tummy and then give the pain meds with the meal. Helps alot....

Hope he feels better soon....The diarrea may ahve also been from the anesthesia as well as the tramatic events. The pain meds and anti inflamtories cause that as well. Unfortuantely we've been through it so hope he feels better soon!
Darby wore this soft one...

We also have a clear yellow plastic one.
Sigh...

Willoughby will probably get so he just plows through things...
that's where the wall and shin damage comes in. 8)

Gentle hugs to your boy.
We had a girl who had to wear one for over 5 weeks once due to surgery on her leg. 1st day she was afraid to walk. By day 2 you wouldn't even know she had the cone on the way she was moving around. I gave her some time to run in the dog run, cone free, under strict supervision. Took it off for eating & drinking.
Kody just went through this same thing only he had a small one one each ear...our vet opted to wait and see if it would go down on its own. It did but it took about 2 weeks before it was really not very noticable. We had to keep him in the house when I watered my plants so that he wouldn't attack the water thus causing an extreme constant hard head shaking! He is now fully mended and you can not tell he even had an issue! Good Luck with your furbaby!!
 Well, I see Darby also wore PJ's!!!

Willoughby is plowing into things, mostly me! He still has trouble going downstairs. the tummy is now much better and he's finished the course of Metacam. :phew: We've managed two morning walks where he's figured out that the cone will bend when he wants to examine a tree! 8) I can't get him to stop shaking his head altogether. There has been some bleeding around the sutures on the outside of his ear. I'm putting baciguent on the area to see if that will reduce the itch.

Forgot to log in! I'm at work in a slow moment. :crossed:
