Running with your dog

So, I have toyed with the notion of picking up running over the past few years. I have always enjoyed walking and can walk all day. As you can imagine, anytime I go out, I take the dogs with me.

Since I feel guilty going outside and doing activities without them, I was thinking about encorporating them with this new idea.

But I'll admit, I'm intimidated. Everytime I have gotten the nerve up to try it, I keep envisioning Asterisk and Wendel running and dragging me behind them.

Does anyone run with their dogs? Any tips to begin this?

I have tried. Morgan is tooo slow - well maybe lately he has picked up a bit but more of a sprinter than a runner:)

Marely is too fast, I annoy her, but I can "jog" and keep her in a trot for short intervals - which is good therapy for her.

for real running I do the tread mill and they watch, or I ride a bike and she runs.

Morgan thinks such exercise is overrated.
Don't want to rain on your parade but I'd check with your vet about this first. My vet has always told me this breed is NOT one to go along jogging with their owners for any great distance. A short romp in the back yard or some running after sheep is a lot different than jogging say 2-3 miles. It's the repetitive action in jogging that is hard on their joints. Not that I ever had any intentions of jogging (you'd know if you saw me  ). Now Isaac & I are back to taking a daily walk. He's 11-1/2 years old now & gained some weight over the last 6 months & winter isn't here yet! I attribute it to the fact that his companion (Melody) is no longer here to play with  . And José & Mariah always seem to pair up together. At any rate, when he weighed in at 97.5# at the vet yesterday both the vet & I said "time for some exercise". Can't change food due to his sensitive intestinal tract. Can't cut the amount too much or he'll be scarfing up dust bunnies 8O . And the walking sure won't hurt me either. Not to mention the fact that it is sorta nice to have some 1 on 1 time with my oldster who always is "waiting his turn" while the 2 younger ones vie for my attention!
How about walk/jog? You walk and then jog for about 30 seconds and then walk some more, jog for a minute, etc until you get up to about 2 minutes run. As far as running continually, talk to Chewie. I'd think softer ground would be important.

Me run?
I have been taking Bella jogging with me for the past 3 weeks. We just rescued her and she loves going for a jog. We only go 2 miles max and I do not run that fast - only 3 mph I'd guess. That probably the same as a fast walk.

I take her and my other dog at the same time and make sure that both stay on the left of me and do not pull. I don't want to go super fast and my other dog is 9 and slowing down some.

It does help her burn off some energy and I want to keep her and me in shape. She now expects to go every day and is disappointed if it is raining and we don't go.
I (sadly) am no longer a jogger. (ex-cross country runner in HS and college - shame on me! )

But, we definitely get out and do stuff!

1st - get medical clearance.
2nd - start slow and ease into stuff like distance, taking terrain and heat into consideration.

Just like us - some dogs are more of athletes than others * think Chewie, vs.....Clyde??*

Some love it, some will heartily protest it.

Surface is a major consideration. I never do more than walk on paved surfaces. All our running is on gravel or grass.
I am looking at doing these sports long term, and a senseless injury brought on by repetitous activity on hard surfaces is just plain stupid.

This run on Monday was 2.7 miles -

and this one last year was a bit over 5.5 miles - and this is them almost back in - (water and rest breaks included, of course)

We also mush in the winter, do agility, rally, obedience, herding, weight pulls and backpacking, and preparation is so very important. All these sports use different muscles and need to be addressed separately. But - we LOVE it!
I walk/sprint with Jackson and we do okay. I walk for a few minutes to loosen up and then sprint as long as I can (30-60 seconds max) and then resume a fast walk. Slowing down from the first few sprints can be difficult because Jackson tends to want to keep running and will try to pull, but after 2-3 sprints she does great. We sprint again whenever I feel like I can breath halfway normal and my heart slows down from the last sprint.
