Looking for help with questions and breeders in VA

Hi! I live in Central VA and am looking for a male puppy. Does anyone know Shaggeybark OES in Mechanicsville, VA? I would love to hear honest opinions about them.

We're new to this process of working with a breeder to find a family pet, and I have to say that I'm having a hard time understanding the show world and culture. Especially when people have large numbers of dogs on site. I just don't understand how anyone could adequately care for 30+ dogs at their home.

Also, I would be so grateful for help with a few questions in general about the breed:
-How much should male puppies weigh at 5 weeks?
-How soft should an OES coat be?
-Is it normal for grown OES to have pink rings around their eyes?
-Is it possible to determine if a puppy will end up being on the small side of the norm?

Thank you!!

First off, welcome to the forum! In response to some of your questions...

I couldn't tell you for sure what weight you should be looking for in a puppy, but a lot has to do with genetics. Owning my OES and seeing others I've seen OES that can weigh as little as 55lbs and as much as over 100lbs, both male and female. You would really have to see what mom and dad look like to get an idea of that.

OES puppies have a very soft coat, as they age, they will undergo coat changes and change from a black and white coat to a grey and white coat and grow coarser hair.

I've seen sheepies with pink around their eyes, you can see some forum members who have sheepies like that.

And in answer to your last question, its tied into the first question... look at the parents and see. My Asterisk's father was 95lbs and her mother was 60. Asterisk is very tall, but is only 64lbs. Her brother, who is from a different breeding pair is 75lbs.

Good luck in your puppy search!
Shaggeybark is on the OES club breeder referral list so that's definitely a good start! We normally refer people to that list to begin because it's a safe place to start as all of the breeders on that list are breeding for sound dogs-- structurally, temperament-wise and health. A good breeder should be able to answer all your questions openly and honestly, too-- especially things like size, temperament, etc. They usually know their dogs well (though I understand that if you're new, you may not know if they're honest or not!).

Though there's a ton of information on here as you look around on this site, it can be a lot for a newbie. Check out the breed club web site-- it gives you a quick overview and then we can help you with your more specific questions.
