Animal poison control

I was putting together some information at our 911 center for animal poison control and thought I'd share it here. You never know when you might need it so everyone should have emergency info handy. (This goes for every member of the family both 2 legged and 4 legged!)

The best number to call for animal poison control is (888) 426-4435.
This connects you to the ASPCA's service. The call will cost you $50.00 unless the poison is covered by the Animal Product Safety Service, then the product manufacturer will absorb the cost of the call.

Be ready to provide the following information:

Your name, address and telephone number
The species, breed, age, sex, weight and number of animals involved
The poison that your animal was exposed to
Amount of poison, length of exposure and time since exposure
(It's imprtant to be as accurate as possible about this)
The symptoms/problems that your animal is experiencing now

Here is the website for the ASPCA poison control center:
http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=apcc

You should also have pet first aid supplies handy. The following list is from a veterinary site.

A fresh bottle of hydrogen peroxide 3% (USP)
Can of soft dog or cat food, as appropriate
Turkey baster, bulb syringe or large medicine syringe
Saline eye solution to flush out eye contaminants
Artificial tear gel to lubricate eyes after flushing
Mild grease-cutting dishwashing liquid in order to bathe an animal after skin contamination
Rubber gloves to prevent you from being exposed while you bathe the animal
Forceps to remove stingers
Muzzle to keep the animal from hurting you while it is excited or in pain
Pet carrier to help carry the animal to your local veterinarian

Some people had been talking about poisonous plants a little while ago. Here is a link for that:

Hope you never need this information!

The national poison control center will also assist in these types of calls. 1-800-222-1222 for free. I remember with my last dog Nana having to call a few times for things that she would get into. Like Combat ant traps etc....
Excellent post.... very useful information, although I agree calling National Poison Control is best. Anything poisonous to a person is most likely poisonous to an animal, so they of course would be able to help out. If a poison should be washed down with water, or milk, or induce vomiting etc, would be the same for either species.
THANK YOU!

Great thing to post, I had quite forgotten they can poison themselves, and the vets office is NOT always open when you need it. I called poison control with my first sheepie many years ago and it was the best call I made, I found out what she had licked up was inert, but even good news is still news! It is so worth the call just to know that everything is indeed okay.

Up.

You will NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS believe what happened to me today. I thought the above information was so helpful and important that I copied it and posted it on the malteseonly forum, to which I belong (or did belong). I indicated that it was not my material but that I had copied the post from here. I HAVE BEEN BANNED FROM THE SITE FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I sent the post, on that site all posts are sent through a moderator, I wrote a note and said that if it was not allowable to please just delete my post. But my log in has been withdrawn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT??????????????????????????????????
You're right - it's unbelievable!! I cannot fathom what is in this post that would make it offensive. How strange!!
You have to be pulling my leg? I find that to be beyond rude! You try to be helpful and you get that kind of treatment. We love you here at OES.ORG!
You've got to be kidding. Are you sure it isn't a mistake? What reason did they give for it? Or did they just revoke your account? Even if you have no intention of rejoining the board, you should follow up and ask what the reasoning was.

My devilish mind immediately thought that you should give the address to the forum and we should all bombard the moderator with the information that got you banned. He or she has it coming!
My posting "privileges" were revoked (no it wasn't a mistake) because I included the web address in my posting. The users agreement does state that you are not allowed to post web address'........... I guess I assumed a non profit site for poisen control would not be the same as a "commercial" site. But what REALLY galls me is that in my post I told them if it was unacceptable to simply delete the post.

Unlike here, where we are treated like ADULTS (thanks to Ron), all posts on that forum are censored by a moderator. It borders on ridiculous at times and I have often found it quite frustrating to have portions of my post "edited". I did email them with my thoughts on their policy.

Thank you Tylersmom, apparently I am not quite so popular with the maltese owners.....................

I was threatened with banishment once before because I dared to disagree with a breeder on a breeding issue but at the same time he was allowed to post something that was sarcastic and degrading to my opinion. At that time I thought, why do I bother with this forum. But I kept going back because of the breed information.

THose folks aren't anywhere near as nice or as fun as you guys!!! :D
I can't imagine why a site devoted to dogs would NOT want to post websites for animal poison control. That's crazy. Their loss, Tasker's Mom! We'll keep you, Tasker and Ty all to ourselves :D
They may have a deal or advertising with a competing Animal Poison Control line.... the ASPCA is not the only game in town in this very profitable field.

I previously have provided a post from another group that charges "only" $35 per call. I'll have to look it up.
They could have simply not printed my post, they didn't need to BAN ME!!!!
Are you sure you didn't beg to be banned like Integra Helsing?

Hey, I agree with you, but everyone runs their forum the best way that they can.

Here's a link to the "Pet Poison Helpline"

I've come to realize that dealing with Pet Poison Helpline is a nightmare. I feel that they are a lousy company to deal with... so come to your own decisions about whether to contact them should you be desperate to deal with a great company when your pet is ill.

You are right Ron. Technically I did break the rules.

Sooooooooo I'll just have to spend more time HERE :D :D :D :D
Every species of animal is different, making a generalized statement that Human Poison control centers can tell you how to help an animal because its the same, is very wrong. Treatment isn't the same for each animal, especially if its a species other than a cat or dog.

The ASPCA poison control center charges $60 for a consultation. To some that's too much money, but late @ night when your vet is closed and an ER trip is way more expensive (not always needed)> they not only provide treatment info. but peace of mind.

They are experts in Veterinary medicine and have gone to school for several years to specialize in Toxicology and Animal medicine. They are the experts and know what they are doing.
Thank you for your concern Vet Tech, but if you read back you will see the suggested contact is for animal poison control not human. I don't believe anyone suggested calling human.
I was so excited... while I was out I picked up a buisiness card from the Pet Poison Helpline...
I didn't know there was such a thing actually. (I would have just called the vet begging for assistance! )

SO I drove home.. all a flutter to get this info on the forum-- AND YOU ALL BEAT ME TO IT!!!!! HA HA HA  You guys are so smart.

Just to make myself feel better I am going to post this info

(ok i am done now)
My cat may have ingested a small amount of d-con. It has been about 30minutes now. I know this is a dog forum, but my husband is at work in the field & can't b reached. I have no car for at least 3 hours. Should I induce vomiting with peroxide or wait for symtoms? Is it safe to do?

I'd call the hotline above.
The number I left was not the aspca and the cost was $39.00 The vets were very knowledgeable. They are located I think in Ohio Nothing but caring and respect 800213 6680. every animal gets a case number. AS the owner yo can call as many times as you want, get a vet that answers the phone, and as they follow up on your pet if hospitalized, they keep all up to the minute info. If you don't understand a treatment the animal hospital is doing with your pet, they will explain in detail the answers. Sorry poisons that dogs take and considered life threatening DO NOT have the same effect on people. 1 Aleve of 225 mg can kill a large dog, obviously not the same with people. I hope this never happens to anyone, but if you have a puppy that goes in pockets, pocketbooks, opens refrigerators etc...poison control is a good # to have handy. The post on home remedies is excellent, but for many drugs is self limiting. For emergency care it's great if the ingestion was recent. If it has already hit the blood stream....better get to an emergency vet and call poison control
I can't believe you guys have to pay to save either your own or your pets life! :twitch: I would have thought that kind of info was free if for no other reason than to save a life. What is your flat broke? I assume you or your pet just kicks it! Is it just me or is that a huge charge?
I think it's ridiculous to even charge for it!! Several years, I called regular poison control in Mpls., because one of my dogs ate a knee high stocking. They told me to get 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide down her throat and get outside immediately. There was no charge. I guess by the time you pull tour credit card and repeat the number 2 times and the tell you to hold, yup, you and or the dog will be dead. I wonder if you called 911, if they would come............... :lmt: :crossed:
