As far as I know when Iams was purchased by Proctor & Gamble they changed to lesser quality ingredients that can cause food allergies in pets. I've read that since the switch some dogs have experienced intense itching, brittle/poor quality coats, rashes, hot spots, etc.

Here's an interesting article about the switch:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&contentId=A42435-2002Aug20&notFound=true

"By early 2000, Iams reformulated its dog food ingredients "to enhance" the formula -- substituting chicken for "chicken by-products meal" and a "carbohydrate blend" of bran sorghum and barley for rice. It then adjusted its package instructions to reduce per-day servings by 25 percent to reflect scientific evidence, it says, that in-home dogs are 25 percent less active than kennel dogs -- the basis of most dog food formulations."

Here's a link to some very interesting reviews of Iams on RateItAll.com http://www.rateitall.com/i-24982-iams.aspx
Yes. I do agree. We used Iams for our first OES Flash and he thrived on it; however that was many years ago. We now have 2 almost 8 and 2 6 yearolds and we switched them from Iams puppy formula to Nutro when they grew out of puppy food. We have firmer stool and less incidents of vomiting than with Iams. I also noticed that Iams didn't always seem fresh and my dogs ate more with the Nutro. The links provided by RollrGirl are pretty interesting and are worth reading.
Eukanuba Premium is supposed to bethe best of the best especially for females before and during breeding. Look at this site http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/feeding-pregnant-dogs.html.
I have also read that the premium diet is much better for joints and can add up to 2 years on the life of your dog. I can't find that article, i will keep looking but time is a premium today. I am pretty sure Eukanuba is owned by Iams though, if that is a concern. Be careful for the first few days if you switch, with the higher protien they don't need to eat quite as much.

:( :x

Tucumsa will definately not be using ANYTHING from Iams
Try this also from the same site http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/dogfoods.html
This is a very good site http://www.petdiets.com/default.asp?Men ... =/main.asp it has a calculator that measures calories, weight, caloric density of pet food and gives you how many cups per day to feed. take this with a grain of salt, every dog is different.
Thanks so much for the info!

I wouldnt have thought twice about feeding him Iams
if this had not been brought to my attention, and with
your concerns
I have reviewed some of the articles you have posted since I feed Max Iams, but most of these articals are over 3 years old. Is there current facts stating it is poor quality food? My vet told me it was good and I have not had any problems with it or with max.

As far as I know, when they changed formulas back in 2001 or 2002 they kept it that way. I've never heard anything saying that they've decided to improve their ingredients due to all the bad press/complaints.
Does anyone use Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken dog foods?

the clerk at the pet store gave me some samples when
we were discussing Iam's

http://www.solidgoldnorthwest.com/produ ... o_dry.html

although I do like the fact that Nutra includes the Glucosamine
and chondroitin
Hi,

I don't want our forum to get further involved in the discussion about the Iams company.
Links have been provided that will lead to places where you can discuss this issue, which can accomplish nothing but hurt everybody's feelings.

Thanks for understanding!
