New dog door

We are remodeling big parts of our house, and the area where the dogs normally play outside and go potty has to be used as an area for big equipment being brought in to do some of the work. We are setting the dogs up with a temporary potty area out the other side of the house.

Normally, we just let the dogs out the front door (into the yard) whenever they ask, since I work at home and am available as a doorman most of the time  . But, with this new arraignment, we are considering installing a dog door through the wall of our laundry room. If it works out, this could be a permanent thing, and would be great for those times when we have to leave the dogs alone in the house, for whatever reason.

This is my question...has anyone here ever had to re-train their (adult) dogs to use a dog door? Is it difficult? :?

No heavy training here. It took one lure through the door for Lucy to learn. Owen's brother comes and visits at the house once every couple of months and he picked it up all on his own just from watching the other dogs. He's never used one other than here. Some dogs really catch on quick.
In a previous house with previous dogs, just lured them through from both directions a couple of times. And voila, they got it!

With a cat it was more difficult and I had to prop open a cat door with a stick for a couple of days but he got it too.

Good luck. :crossed:
The dogs catch on pretty quickly about how the doggy door is used. We are in the process of moving and now have two doggy doors for the girls to get used to their locations. So far so good.

Good luck with your home remodel.
Nope once we pushed the most reluctant ones through a few times they figured it out   At the other extreme we had the dynamic duo who thought nothing of flying thru the door every few minutes as a great game.
The house we just moved into had a dog door already installed (for large dogs, fortunately). Tonks took one look at it and was like "Thats for ME!!!!" and lunged through it. Luna was skeptical, but followed Tonks easily enough.

Its been a few months now, and Tonks' favorite thing is to lie inside the house with her head sticking outside the dog door.

Violet likes to do the same thing...stick her head out the door to see what is going on. She doesn't want to commit herself to going out of the a/c if she doesn't have too. lol
Cool! apparently this is not the problem I worried it would be!

Ive always passed on the dog-door idea in the past due to the extreme cold of our winters. Both because I was worried about heart loss from the house, and fear that the dogs might go out (when we aren't home) and somehow get stuck out there! 8O  But...they make doors rated for very extreme cold these days, and I have friends up here who have assured me that they work just fine.
