cystitis

about 3 weeks ago Summer had a bout of cystitis, cleared up with antibiotics. Not sure what caused it but I think she is heading that way again any ideas on what could cause/prevent it?

Assuming she doesn't have a malformed urethra....somehow intestinal bacteria is more easily getting into the urethra or a bladder pouch (urachal diverticulum).........., she might have itsy bitsy bladder stones/crystals or produce urine that isn't acidic enough to keep the bacteria at bay. Maybe a bladder tumor. Or early symptom of diabetes.

I assume the vet has taken a sterile culture, needle into bladder instead of a natural pee in the cup sample, to determine exactly what the offending bacteria is. Also they can look for minute stones with this sample, red and white blood cells, etc.

If it is too alklaine urine, then special foods or supplements (cranberry powder from Solid Gold or Only Natural pet, among others) may work.

Finally, some girls need to be on anti biotics basically all their lives. Let's hope not. (been there, done that)
It's been a few years now but Panda's ph would rise when she was coming down with a UTI (but she had that bladder defect). Check her urinary ph... might also check for struvite crystals too. Bladder stones can cause recurrent UTIS as Susan mentioned.

Panda's always had a urinary ph imbalance. She's on Betaine Hydrochloride with each meal to keep her urine more acidic. It hasn't upset her stomach like the urinary acidifier Uroeze did and she hasn't had a single accident in the house since starting it and can now eat more veggies. Woohoo! A holistic vet recommended it... as always through, check with the vet to see if it's appropriate and for dosing instructions. The vet might also suggest you encourage her to drink more water too.
thanks today I have been encouraging her to drink more which she has and also gave her a big spoon of natural yoghurt, seems ok for the moment.
well, i dont know how much help this will be BUT..

i have interstitial cystitis. it is a disfunction of the bladder...the two linings seperate, which can cause severe pain....

a bland diet low in protein and other acidic foods do help, however, i have found that a little sprinkle of prelief on food helps too...

here is a clip of it...i dont see why it wouldnt work on dog food too, but i would ask a vet to double check...

How about something nice & warm for her to lay on? Personally I love a hot water bottle during these times, maybe you can wrap one up or use one with a nice thick cover and sit with her while she lays on it so you can make sure it's not too hot & she doesn't try to eat it.
:P I think she would eat the hot water bottle. My theory is she is always cleaning her backside and it is a bit sore and then she cleans her front bottom (as my daughter in law calls it). I have emailed arden grange to see if her food might be too rich and they are sending me samples of their senstive food to see if this makes any difference. Good job she doesnt know we are talking about her.....grin xxx
There are risks to having a urine sample collected with a needle through the bladder wall. In the event that the dog has TCC, bladder cancer, the needle can seed cancer through the body. I have Scotties and they have very high rates of TCC so it is not a urine collection method I would use.

I would have your girl checked for crystals and maybe even checked for stones. I did have a Scottie girl who developed stones when I switched her food. I put her back on her original diet and the stones never recurred. I have had good luck putting dogs on cranberry supplements to help acidify the urine. I have seen human research that vitamin C helps acidify the urine as well but I'd talk to your vet before starting any supplements

I hope your girl feels better soon.
Ellie and Margie have bouts of bladder issues. Vet thinks Ellie picks up bacteria from the ground as she squats very low when urinating. With Margie, seems it's the failure to wipe front to back. She lick's her parts in the wrong order.

When I notice symptoms we immediately start giving 2 cranberry capsules daily for a week. Neither of the girls have required antibiotics to treat the issues since we started with cranberry.
Free catch urine sample is fine if you don't need a sterile sample. Otherwise catheterization or cystocentesis (the needle) is necessary.

Since this girl is licking her privates so much, I would think a sterile sample is necessary to rule out bladder infection. Then if a free fall came back with bacteria it would indicate the bacteria is further along the peepee highway......urethra.

Could the girl be a bit incontinent hence the constant licking? The need to keep herself tidy may lead to a UTI.

Actually one sign of a UTI is licking......or licking by another dog (especially in males).

I had one OES bitch who would not "pee in the cup" so we would have to use the needle method. One day she knew what was coming and expressed her anal glands on the vet. From then on we could never roll that girl onto her back for anything without risking being ....... skunked.
