Feeding Duncan

When I got Duncan in December '04, my brother had been feeding him Alpo canned Prime Cuts, or just whatever happened to be handy I think. He also brought along a bag of some kind of puppy chow, (even though Duncan is 3 years old). Duncan doesn't show much interest in chew bones, only milk bone type treats, and I thought he needed something more crunchy instead of just the soft canned food, so I got some Alpo Prime Cuts dry food, thinking that would be similar to what he was used to. He will not eat just dry food alone. It will sit there for days until he finally is so hungry he will eat it (I guess). I started mixing the dry with half a can, twice a day and that worked okay. Except, he seems to get bored with eating the same thing every day. If I mix the same kind of canned in with the dry for more than a day or so, he doesn't seem to want it. So I ended up getting several varieties of canned and alternating each few days. Are dogs usually this picky? My daughter feeds her doberman dry food, Science Diet I believe, all the time and she just gobbles it up. What' s the deal? lol I think my brother had been feeding him a lot of table food, so maybe that is why he likes "variety".
