Fur balls between the toes.

I wonder if anyone has any tips on removing a solid ball of hair from Teds front paw, he really hates me touching his feet. I have tried to de sensitize him by handling his paws regularly but he is very tense when I touch them. I have tried soaking them in warm water but it is really solid. Ted isn't bothered by the lump and isn't licking or limping. I am not sure whether to just leave it or not. Any advice would be appreciated.

I remove them with blunt nose scissory so as not to cut the pads. In some dogs I was able to clip them out with a tiny head clipper or even the regular clipper depending on the paw size.

Of course you've got to get your pup used to having the feet and toes handled.......some are really difficult to convince you mean no harm.......and some never learn.
One of mine HATES it and it is work everytime. I try to keep them brushed out so they don't form, which is even more work :(
It probably needs to come out... I'm afraid he'll develop a hot spot under it and then licking and infection will begin. It's going to hold moisture too and irritate the skin.

I would get someone to help you keep him calm and give him treats while you do tend to this. I'd use a small pair of scissors and cut any remaining mat as short as possible being care of the skin. If necessary, cut the remaining hair in sections and begin picking it apart. I'd give him a break if he's not handling it well.

After this, take a couple of minutes each and every night with a card board fingernail file and run it quickly over each toe nail 1-2 times, then stop. Try to make it a time he'll begin to look forward to. Quick, easy, fun... use super good treats he'll only get when you're messing with his feet. Slowly work up to 3-4-more pass with the file.

It's not actually finished but this might help you with the feet if your dog is a pet (not show )- http://www.untilyoufindme.com/Pads.htm
That is a wonderful info site you did. Thank you for all of us who have no idea how to do this :D

I might add to the original poster, I let my Vet shave the hair between the toes and cut his nails. They charge me maybe 15 dollars - sometimes as a courtsey if I am there for regular visit. My dog also HATES his paws touched - even though we started young with the touching and clipping nails.
Thanks for everyones suggestion....we managed to remove the balls with blunt ended scissors and lots of treats :D

That's a great photo essay!!!
Now if I could only stop Tiggy from kicking me while I'm trying I might actually be able to use clippers. The vibration must tickle too much so I have to use the slow less efficient method of scissors. Maybe one day she'll get less sensitive tootsies.
Yes, great photos.....I'll send my pups to your pedicure shop anyday!
Glad to hear you got it taken care of. I usually check their feet weekly. I had 2 that would get mats inbetween the pads very quickly. Other 2 never matted no matter how long the hair got. Also have 3 (plus other show dogs that I do) that will let you do anything to their feet or nails. Another one I had, confomation champ & obedience titled HATED her nails done. She'd let me shave between the pads but not touch her nails. The only people who could do her nails were my vet & my breeder/mentor....and then it was still a case of "she only let them do it because they wouldn't let her win". So go figure.
It's for rescues, etc. to share... to help adopters and first time OES owners care for their dogs if they want to groom their own dog or are unable to use the services of a professional groomer.

When I got my OES-mix about 17 years ago, I knew nothing about how to groom her. http://www.oesusa.com/Nikki/Nikki-8.jpg . This was before the Internet so a lot was trial and error... advice from our vet. I didn't know you were supposed to trim the hair between the pads. I would shave the pad hair level thinking it was enough. She ended up with matted hair between the pads that I had to break up with scissors. :(

My sister recently adopted a kitten... her vet recommended she clip/file one toe nail per day. The idea is to get the pet used to daily foot handling rather than more prolonged handling/restriction every 2-3 weeks.
