Old VHS tapes, what to do?

We have lots of old tapes. I gave many away and tossed our own recorded. We still have many left. I hate to just toss them so if anyone has a idea let me know. We don't even own a VHS recorder/player any longer.

Ask around, somebody may want them if they can be recorded over. My boss only has a VCR, not a DVR so her husband is always looking for tapes.

If nobody wants them, look into recycling them. My county has a recycling program that will accept videotapes.

If all esle fails, throw the darn things out!
Check with your local nursing homes, senior centers, daycare facilities (if child appropriate) and see if any them would like the tapes. I donated ours to a local nursing home and they were ecstatic to get the over 100 movies we donated.

How about your local library? Ours loans out both DVD & VHS tapes free. I always borrow both types as I have a DVD plus a VCR (built in the TV) in my grooming room.
I finally got rid of my old laserdiscs! Ran a giveaway ad in the local advertiser paper, and a guy came and was thrilled to have them.

I probably could have sold them on Craigs...but I just wanted them out, without any hassels.

You can always giveaway stuff. As we say in the car biz...there's an a** for every seat!

Most libraries are phasing out their VHS collections and don't really want them as donations anymore. It's a definite "call first" situation! Maybe small public libraries might still be interested. Otherwise, I like the idea of giving them to nursing homes or places like that.

A funny side story as to the value of VHS anymore: at the university I work at, we employ disabled people from a local organization that helps them get the jobs. Most of the people we get are mentally disabled-- we used to have a couple of schizophrenic guys but one guy we've had forever is Mike. Mike is in his 50s and probably is more like a 9 year old. Somehow, he adopted James and I as his work "parents" and now we're responsible for buying him gifts for his birthday and Christmas and all that. (This is less altruistic than it is just extremely pressured by Mike. He comes and tell us what he MUST get for him, lol) He loves movies but they have to be absolutely crappy movies, Steven Segall-type, straight to video junk. Well, his whole life, Mike has collected VHS but in the last two years even he will only accept a DVD. He's really gotten quite hoighty toighty about it. Someone gave him a VHS and he jammed it back at them and said "I don't want that!" It makes me laugh because combined with his lack of money and love of collecting movies, it would seem Mike would love to get anything he could but even he is shunning VHS. ;)
They had this device on my most favorite website ever, that would take the info from a VHS and convert it to a DVD.

I wish I had bought it when I saw it, I haven't seen it on the site for nearly a year now.
If you're not worried about the content of the tapes, call you town or city and ask them how to dispose of them.
If you're looking to transfer the content of them onto DVDs, a camera shop would probably be able to do that for you.
The library system that I grew up with has an annual sale.
Old books, videos, anything donated. They even get Collector's items. My mother and mother-in-law volunteer at the sorting site. They average over 700,000 items sold every year. I got a great set of McGruffy Readers.
