More .... can you believe people..

So here is another crazy incident that happened yesterday afternoon.

I took Harry to a park to walk a path around the perimiter. There were several people walking their dogs. On guy was walking two hounds (maybe Ibizan Hounds?) coming towards me. As we approached him he pulled off to the side and stopped. I took that to mean most likely one of two things: his dogs are scared of other dog(s) or more likely his dog(s) are not trustworthy around other dogs. I kept Harry in heal position, as I always do when walking on these paths, because it is good dog etiquette.

On another one of my loops around I am now approaching this guy from behind. He is stopped in the middle of the path talking to a woman with two kids. I didn't want to interupt their conversation so I walked around him but because of the way he acted before I made sure that I walked as far out as possible and that I put myself between Harry and his dogs. Harry of course is oblivious. As we are passing his one dog lunges at Harry snarling. The guy instantly grabs his dog even as I keep on walking.

Now in hindsight I probably should have made my presence known by saying "excuse me" but I did not want to interupt the conversation. However, as I was walking by I hear the guy mumbling stuff to the lady as if he was surprised by the dog's behavior and "did not know why he is dog did that". I assume the lady was asking him about his dogs and he did not want to admit after the incident that his dog may have issues. About that time the one child says loudly "It has a bunch of hair in it's mouth!". Well of course that would be a mouthful of OES hair. I am used to this as Harry has had hair pulled out before by playmates. But it was the response that came next that irritated the heck out of me. The guy starts laughing.

I am about 10 feet past him by this point and just turn around to see him pulling the hair out of his dog's mouth while he is chuckling. I just stand there staring at him. Finally he makes eye contact with me and then says "Sorry". I just turned and kept walking.

Seriously, I know Harry was not hurt (he would have yelped) and I take my share of the responsibility in the incident for not making our presence better known given my initial suspicions about the dog.

But .... in all the times another dog has ended up with my dog's hair in their mouth the owner is so apologetic even when the dogs were just playing. I never care. But Harry has been "lunged at" only a few times and I have never had someone not bother to ask if he is okay - although I know full well he is.

But I thought laughing was just rude. I don't care how damn cute sheepdog hair is hanging out of another dog's mouth is.

Judi, good for you for holding your tongue! The stare was perfect. My response would have been less lady-like.
Don't you wonder why the people conversing didn't bother to move off the walking path?????? I mean, they were being an obstacle to go around even for people without kids or dogs! I am just used to saying "EXCUSE ME" sorta loud. It's become a habit from over a decade at the dog shows!
Poor Harry......what a brave boy not to yelp or scream!!!!

unfortunately....as my aunt use to tell...you can't fix stupid!!!!!!
Good boy, Harry! Good girl, Judi!!  I, too, would have said something very un-ladylike.
You should send him a stuffed sheepie with something hanging out of its mouth -- a summons.

a friend just sent me a set of 6 videos called "you can't fix stupid" . What timing. I think I will send them to you, Judi......
