Help me allay my irrational fear....

that a meth addict is going to knock on my door after I've gone to bed to ask for money.

This happened to a poster on another BB I frequent and now I'm scared that this will happen to me. I live in a quiet neighborhood with no known meth heads/houses. My neighbors are normal and nice.

It's not going to happen but I can't convince myself otherwise. I did stop reading the other BB so I won't hear any more stories. I'm hoping I will soon forget this so I won't be scared any more!!!

Who said you need to answer your door? Your doors and windows are locked. You have a dog that barks (hopefully) and a cell phone or cordless handy to call 911. Maybe you need to install an alarm system.

(I have purposely omitted the reference to a gun....shotgun...but did originally have it here)

is there something else going on in your life that is making you so vulnerable???
Paula, after our breakin last year, I was totally paranoid. Chances of a meth addict knocking on your door is slim, but the fear is real. So, you need to take some precautions to make yourself more comfortable.

Keep your cell phone charged and with you at night. Make sure your doors are doubled locked (door knob and chain lock/or slide lock). If you have a patio door make sure it is double locked as well, and put a piece of broom handle along the track, so it can't be opened.

I don't know the where your car is from your home, but keep your car keys with you. If you ever feel threatened...HIT THE PANIC BUTTON from your home and let the alarm go off. It will scare away any intruder.

Or...you could come live with us
Or get one of those good OES watchdogs.... :D :D :D
Can Bob be trained to whinny on command?

Seriously though, I'm sorry you're so upset by this. :(
Meth addicts are notoriously afraid of lights so you could leave your light on, or get one of those motion detectors.

This true Ron? That brings up many interesting images......strobe lights on the porch.......a revolving disco ball.

The motion detection lights are a good along with increasing the locks on doors and windows.

I keep forgetting about the car horn.....do you have a extra set to keep by the bed?
I leave my porch light on, as well as a nightlight in the kitchen and another light on in the dining room. Deadbolt on the front door, patio door locked with a stick in the track (did you know the official name for that is a Charlie bar? My mom told me so). Windows on the first floor are locked.

I'll keep my keys by my bed, but would the car alarm work from upstairs?

Thanks for the suggestions. You're making me realize I'm doing what I can do to stay safe. While my fear is irrational, it never hurts to be prepared!
I went to a local Home Dept and purchased a "Beware - Security Dogs on Premis" weith a very scary looking dog growling on it. I put one on my driveway gate, my side and back door.

Of course the neighbors thought it was hilarious that I have that sign with my two OES but a stranger or intruder wouldn't know I ahve lick attack dogs

My friend works for the police department and he said usually, unless your house is being "targeted" for some reason, any intruder will go elsewhere is they know a dog is in the premis....
Well, not to play "junior psychologist" or anything  ...but, are you sure there isn't something else in your life that you're feeling anxious about? Maybe this "meth-head" fear is just a handy thing to worry about, that you're subconscious has latched onto? Irrational fears are sometimes like that...Ive had them myself, on and off.

Just a thought :?

Otherwise...I like Sheepie-boss's disco ball idea!
Oh Paula ! don't worry.... We live in a very very small town, I have a good (very good) friend that works for the police and I just found out that our town has a high meth ''situations'' ....I never tought this would happen in our neighbourhood ...my chid just started Highshcool and I grew up in this town! I could not believe what he was telling me!! He knows our children and the way we raised them....anyhow we live in a very quiet community and I tought this would happen only in big cities ! I was wrong !

they won't bug you unless you have something to give them! so just live as you normally do, they won't even know you exist! I won't even worry if I were in your shoes ! Meth addicts do not come knocking on the door !

Sleep well don't worry, I would not answer the door at night even in a quiet town ! meth is everywhere...big cities to swall towns..we just don't know about it!

I'm just happy we are aware about it and can talk about it to our kids !
Thanks Paula without this pole, I never knew about meth in our town !!!!!!!
Ahley is right. They tend to stay away from people with dogs.
I would never answer the door at night unless I knew the person - but even then I would wonder why they would be knocking at that hour?
I would hide by the door with a baseball bat until they went away.
Get the stickers with the alarm companys on them
We have motion detecter lights around our house. The downside is that they go on and off when it's windy or when a coon or something crosses the beam path. Anyone who breaks into my house would be greeted by howling dogs, Paula I can make you tape of it :)
Paula, are you joking? I can't tell.

No, I'm not joking! Every once in a while I read something or see something on tv that really scares me for a few days.

Last night was much better. I kept thinking about the words of wisdom from my friends on this bb and I felt a lot less anxious.

Did you keep your car keys with you? Did you try it to see if work from upstairs?
Forgot my car keys. Did have my cell phone though, and the neighbors had their porch lights on, so that helped ease my irrational anxiety.
Years ago we were burgled as we slept , they came in and took my husbands wallet from the kitchen and left again ...it wasn't the theft that upset me it was the thoughts of what the guy could have done in our home , we went out and bought our first dog straightaway and haven't been without one since , my husband works away a lot so I'm on my own with the kids and can say I've never lost a nights sleep having the dogs listening out for me .....anyone with half a brain cell would go to a house without dogs before going to one that has them to commit a crime , you're safe !! :D

Bob would be a very good watch-horse since he distrusts anyone he hasn't seen 1,000 times who doesn't feed him. He immediately pins his ears and backs up with a glare of death. Plus his size is rather intimidating. Too bad he doesn't live at my home.

I think I will go to the hardware store and buy a "beware of dog" sign. I wonder if there is a gizmo of a barking dog that is motion activated.....

That is funny - as LeAnne and I have that pegged as the PERFECT invention!
We walked a lot in her old neighborhood and loved listening to the different pitched barks as we went by houses.......we alway said we needed to make and market that device! :D
We installed an alarm system 2 years ago after our phone company listed our address & phone # ( we have always paid for an unlisted-protected # ). We both have/had jobs where that info should not be public knowledge. I can say it is the best $40 we spend a month. It not only includes the intruder protection but fire as well.
As far as your panic alarm on your car....it should work from the 2nd story of your house. Give it a try during the day so you can sleep easier.
Oh, and getting an OES with the big dog bark works really well
I have seen a dog barking alarm.
It was online a few years ago, cant remember where but I listened to the online version and it was scary.
I cant remember how it was set up but I think it connected to the door bell so it seemed like the dog was reacting to someone ringing your doorbell. :D

I had an idea for this yesterday--a doorbell that doesn't ring, but barks. Maybe I'll see if I can find one.
I think it would be even smarter to have a recording of another meth head preemptively asking the other meth head for money when he rang the doorbell.

I used to use that tactic with this crazy guy who hung out in the library where I work. He would always ask for money so whenever I saw him, I'd run up to him and say "Hey, man, do you have like $1 I could borrow?" and that got rid of him right away. He stopped asking. Then he went to prison and that helped even more.
The can I borrow money question when its from a stranger is sooo weird.
They're going to give it back to you next time you see them right. 8O
