Hi! I am Angie.

Hello everyone. I have been stalking this board for several months but never joined because I don't actually have an OES yet and felt silly joining. Well, oh well! I am here now! I am waiting until my family is out of the military and settled before getting my sheepy. I want to make sure I can dedicate myself to his/her training and give them the best home I can. At the moment I have a cat and a lizard. Anyway, I look forward to all the wonderful insight this board will bring in my journey!

4 months until we are DONE with the Army!!!! Which means 4 months until I can get my OES!!!!

Sincerely, Angie! :D

I've been on this board for about 5 years and STILL don't have a sheepie, so don't let that stop you from hanging around here. Welcome!

Its a great idea to find out all you can before you get your sheepie.
Welcome from MD. Do you plan on staying in NC or relocating?
There are several rescue groups and breeders depending on where you plan to call home.
p.s. Thanks for all you and your family have given....Kathy

Welcome!
Welcome! I have 5 boys and could "loan" you one til you get yours :)
Ahh thanks guys. No I don't plan to stay in North Carolina. We are planning to move to Dallas, Texas to be near my mother. I have been stalking an OES breeder site for longer then this board! lol. http://www.cottondogs.net/ I have been watching her puppies for awhile now. I plan to email her soon and establish a relationship because she claims to be pretty picky with who she lets purchase her puppies. I take that as a good sign that she is a good breeder! If anyone knows anything about her I would love the info. I wonder if she is on here?

You'll have a lot of very reputable breeders to choose from if you're looking in Texas. Check out the breed club website as a good place to start:

http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamer ... hwest.html

It doesn't appear that this person is affiliated with the breed club and she says right on the web site that she doesn't show her dogs, which nearly all reputable breeders do to prove the conformation of their breeding dogs-- it's not just about looks of the dog, it's about breeding the correct structure for long term good health, doing genetic testing on the parents to improve the chances of good health in your puppy and breeding for temperament. She also mentions something about a dog having champions in a bloodline which really isn't saying anything. It's one of those things that people to say to make their dogs sound more desirable. Unless the parents and grandparents are champions, anything beyond that doesn't mean much. Essentially, you could have a mixed breed dog with champions in a bloodline!

As you know from reading this forum, an OES is a long term investment and you owe it to yourself to get the best dog possible for your money. It's better to pay a little more up front and avoid a lifetime of health issues than save a few hundred dollars and have to watch your dog suffer through all sort of health issues that could have been avoided.

Please understand that we all just love this breed and we want everyone to get the best dog possible. I swear this isn't supposed to be a finger waggling lecture!

Thank you for the advice. After I posted yesterday I went looking for breeder info on the site and found the list of breeders for Texas! While that one breeder I found doesn't seem to be on the OESCA site I do notice she links the source of her sire and bitches and does appear to do all the "right things" vet wise. I will look into it more. I do want the best little sheepy I can get but when push comes to shove I will follow my heart and instinct in choosing the best for my family! Now off I go to research some more OES breeders!

Oh and PS question. Why do none of these sites (any I find that seem reputable at least) ever list prices! Don't get me wrong, I will spend the extra $$ for my furbaby but it feels so shady to not have a pricing list. Maybe I am a straight forward kind of gal but I always get the feeling that people that don't state there pricing straight up tend to change there pricing and overcharge people they feel they can sucker. I am just so nervous I am going to get shanghai'd!!!!

Ya'll input is invaluable!
You can expect to pay between $1500 and $2000 for a quality puppy.

BYB like to charge less so they can sell more puppies and pump more out.

I have been seeing a lot of sites offering OES for $600-800 and I always wondered if that was correct. I actually have an OES fund piggy bank. lol. I am also in search of a good pet insurance company.
If you go to a show in TX, you'll find a lot of reputable breeders not on that list you found which helps if you're looking for something specific (gender, etc). That's how a received a LOT of hookups. Though I didn't go with any of them, many of the big breeders (tojo, lambluv, etc) had people who were having litters in TX.
Jaci (6Girls) has an excellent post about not only buying from a good breeder but also insurance here. Lots of good info.

Good luck in your search for your new puppy. 4 months is not a lot of time to be looking and getting ready for your new family member. I can't think of a better way to get these last 4 months to pass by!!
