Bathing -Ears

When you give your dog a bath, do you put cotton in their ears to keep the water out? Do you use anything special to keep them dry while bathing or do anything after?

I am now bathing my own and really don't know what the groomer did regarding this, if anything. Seems mine tends to shake his head after baths and the wetness in the ears I think is causing infection. Any hints of what to do to keep ears dry? Cupping with my hand doesn't sem to work :?

I clean their ears when they get a bath and use R7 powder in them after, it keeps them dry.
I stick my thumb over Owen's ear hole as I rinse and then I clean them out after the bath to get any water out that got in. I try not to super soak that area.
Not to sound dumb but when you apply the powder in the ear, do you just shake it in and leave it? My vet does all the ear cleaning for me so I don't need to get any hair out or anything. Its just to dry out after a bath.

I also try not to soak that area but somehow the water gets in there :(
I think some do use cotton balls in their ears. I pluck the ear hair as necessary which is different for every dog, and have an ears and toenails day every 2 or 3 weeks. The powder goes in after I soak up as much water from their ears as possible using paper towel or cotton balls, then put the powder in and massage the base of the ear to get it in all the nooks and crannies and just leave it.
Nelson's ears and flaps tend to be really greasy so we use a good degreaser (diluted Dawn soap or "Filty Animal" shampoo) directly into the ear canal. Rinse really well with a slow flow of lukewarm water. After several shakes of the ears to get the bulk of the water out, we put a few drops of ear cleaner or 91% alcohol directly into the ear to dry and prevent infection. Once the ears are clean we pluck excess hair from inside the ear using ear powder to for gripping. Be careful not to leave too much powder in the ear canal.
I just reread the ear cleaning post by Carl. One more question...will alcohol burn if there is any slight infection or redness?

I am so upset with myself. I gave my boy a bath Sunday and last night he started with the shaking of the head, etc. We just got over a serious bout of MRSA in his ears - took almost 6 months to finally clear it. Now I am all upset that I CAUSED the ear infection and am scared to death it may go into MRSA again   We already ahve call into the Vet.

So thank you for this info - which I should have researched before giving him the bath. Bad Mommy
It might not be the bath that caused the infection, he may have been getting another infection anyway.

I put two cotton wool balls in each ear before I bath (head shaking can cause the top one to fall out once its wet) and cup my hand over the ear and keep head washing and rinsing to a minimum.

After the bath I take the wet cotton wool out and put another dry one in to soak up any excess. This cotton wool also helps cut the noise of the dryer and Tiggy is happier as she doesnt like the dryer.

Remember to take them out after you've finished drying though. I leave the ear clean till last so I dont forget.
I don't use cotton balls, but I do the main ear cleaning while grooming using Carl's instructions. This means that bath time (every 8 weeks or so) is just for getting the hair clean, I don't pour water into the ears at all and keep head cleaning to a minimum to avoid too much stuff going into the eyes. I think it depends on the dog. Too much fiddling can irritate, Ru had a little infection once, I found that when I stopped using the drops and fiddling about with his ear, it cleared up -but I don't think it was MRSA!
Well, the results came back and my baby has an ear infection and it is a staph and it is a resistant staph but not MRSA. Which only means there are more meds to pick from to treat him. I feel terrible.

On his next bath, I will use the cottom balls and other suggestikns made. He won't be getting another bath until we clear this...again. He will be okay. Its not as serious as it was the first time. I watch him like a hawk...any time we start to get a head shake, he is right to the vet. We can't afford health wise to wait until tany possible infection leads to a serious infection. mRSA is very difficult to clear.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I wish I had asked before I gave him the darn bath. Stupid Mommy :x
Dont beat yourself up. It might not have been the bath!

My Dalmo gets lots of ear infections and I have NEVER bathed him. His coat is so short I just wipe him over with a wet cloth and he comes up all nice nad clean.
The exact opposite to my sheepie's beauty regime.

And now you know for future baths you wont have to wonder was it the bath or not.
