Housetraining a puppy that refuses the outside

I just recently got a new Sheepie puppy and I believe her breeder taught her to go to the bathroom inside and now she refuses to potty anywhere outside!

I have done all the correct things - taking her out after waking, playing, eating, etc. and she will run furiously back to the front door and whimper until let indoors, where she will immediately go potty indoors! I have treated her and "thrown a party" on the few (2-3) occasions where she has pottied outside but her natural tendency is to run for indoors to potty. She loves her crate, but does not mind at all soiling it! She prefers the inside to outside so much I wonder if she has a fear associated with the outdoors now.

Each time she starts to go inside, I do the recommended loud NO! and take her to her spot outdoors, but she only runs back to the door to be let inside to finish.

Does anyone have any tips that can please help me and my family? It's extremely frustrating!

Oops - I just saw the whole forum devoted to house training. Please move this if you need to, mods.

First, do not just let her out alone to potty. You MUST have her on a leash ( even if your yard is fenced ) and accompany outside. yes, even in the rain, snow, early in the morning, etc. I kept a pair of shoes and a coat right by the door to quickly get on. Especially in the morning, get out fast! Ha ha....

She needs to ahve you there to reward her as soon as she goes. Letting her alone outside and wating until she comes in creates several problems. First, she's afraid. Second, if she goes you won't know it. Third, if she gets her treat when she comes in, she doesn't associate it with outside potty. Of course there is also the added trouble of being outside alone can get her into trouble, eating something she shouldn't ,etc. Until housebroken, you MUST be with her outside.

If she is soiling her crate, is the crate too large? When you say the breeder taught her to potty inside, do you mean on paper?

If its on paper, slowly move the paper closer to the door. Maybe even put a piece outside. I'm not all that familiar with paper training as I've never done it.

Also be sure when you clean up the mess, its with something that will kill the odor or she will continue to be attracted to that same spot.

Always remember, the pup is just doing what comes naturally. We as humans are training her to do something we need her to do. So, never, ever, never, ever, hit her, stick her nose in the mess or use any physical force thinking it will help. And never ever scold her AFTER the fact. She will not know why and in the end it will ruin her relationship with you.

Hosebreaking has to be the most frustrating aspect of puppy ownership. Hang in there....
Thank you, Ashley, so much. Just to clarify, we are always with her when she is outside, always. We are standing in the grass as she bolts back to the door whimpering to go back inside to finish her business!

I am not sure if the breeder used paper training or not, but I do like the idea of moving the paper closer and closer to the door. I did put some puppy pads outside in the grass, but that hasn't helped -- yet. I'm not giving up!

Also, we got her a big crate, but sectioned it off so it's basically large enough just for her to turn around and stand up in!

Any more tricks or tips would so be appreciated!
I would go with the paper and move it closer to the door.

Is she afraid outside on walks or is it just that she doesnt want to potty outside? If its just potty, try different surfaces, my Mum's poodle HATES pottying in long grass especially if its wet. She runs around and whimpers and will go back and go in the house. So now she's allowed into a paved courtyard area when the grass is wet and that makes her comfortable and there's no mess in the house.

You could even try putting down a largish area of paper outside and see if that helps or if she likes carpet get a piece of fake turf for outside. In Aus we can buy fake turf squares that are meant to fit on top of a box affair thhat creates an indoor dog toilet. The replacement turf is quite cheap so you try a piece of that. Or else some marine grade carpeting from your hardware store.

I would also add that if your puppy is like mine you need patience lots of patience. Tiggy (my sheepie) was the hardest puppy I've ever potty trained it took much longer than the other breeds I've had and at 18 months old we still have the occasional accident at night. She's not in a crate though and has free run of the kitchen. I dont know if its a sheepie thing or just Tiggy but it seemed to take a long time for her to get good bladder control and she is so distractable that some nights I'd stand outside freezing my but off for 15 minutes while she looked at the stars and the fence tops (might be a cat or a bird there  ) and then 10 minutes after we were back in the house she'd potty. 8O 8O Less interesting distractions.

I bought lots of the cleaner that removes urine smells from flooring and mopped the floors with it often. We did get there in the end it just took a lot longer than I'd expected.

Hang in there and good luck. :crossed:
