is anyone familiar with this shelter:

Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility?

I found a 7mo. male OES and I've contacted them about him. Maybe this could be my new ball of fluff! I wanted a young male for my female shepherd mix.

It's a long ways away, but maybe arrangements could be made for transporation. I was wondering if anyone was familiar with this facility. It sounds like they keep the animal for 5 days before euthanizing. How sad is that! I've asked them to provide me with any info they could. Is there anythiing in particular I should ask?

I think they keep the dogs for 5 days before they allow them to be adopted out, just in case the owner is looking for them.
I guess that's probably why he's not adoptable until Sept. 19th. While I always hope his owners would claim him if he had been lost, I don't want to chance having him be put down either.
So sad for me, but great for him. My wait continues.

The boy is safe... Carolina's OES Rescue is assisting him-

From what Kathy had previously been told and from what the kind
animal control person had shared, he does appear to be deaf.
Good news!
awesome. rescue people are amazing!
I will update on this boy when we pick him up!
He will be available for adoption after we have him vetted
and temperment tested.
Talking to the wonderful folks at the shelter, seems to be
a sweetie.
If interested in this boy please feel free to fill out an adoption
aplication at www.coesr.org

Things to think of if considering a deaf dog..
(other deaf dog owners please feel free to add)

Deaf dogs can NEVER be off lead unless in a secure area.
I have the clingiest boy but, would never take that chance.

Even in a fenced yard you have to go out and use hand signals to
bring them in...

Yes, our beloved sheepies are counter surfers, there is no "ISH"
you have to get up and correct the behaviour.
This is even if they are chewing up a flip flop in the middle of the night

Georgie just reminded me you can't say "ish" to stop barking either

Benefits of a deaf dog??
They do not bark at each noise...
If you are sneaky you can go to potty without them :P
They are very sight oreinted and stick close...
AND thery flat out love ya like any other dog!

I absolutely adore my two deaf sheepies but, it is not for everyone.
Hi Donners Mom! :)

I am the person that started this topic. I saw the OES when looking at PetFinders.com. I had contacted the shelter and they told me that he'd already been adopted. I am still very interested in this young guy. I believe I already filled out your application (unless it's a standard one that looks like another site - because it looks really familiar to me.) If you don't have one, just let me know and I'd be happy to fill it out.

I'm so thrilled to hear that you picked him up AND that he is still available. Please let me know how his vet appt goes.

Thanks!

Jasper is safe!!!!!!!
Marty picked him up about an hour ago!
He is a little stinky but, a happy wiggler! :D

He has, what we hope to be, flea allergies
and fly bites on his ears but, doesn't seem
to care now that he is on the move!!

Updates to follow!
Off to the vet on Monday
Oh.. that is GREAT news.. can't wait to see pictures of him.

Yep, me too. I'm glad he got picked up and is safe now. :D
The boy was picked up and he is a mess...
I started his shave down and his skin is horrific!
He is going to the vet tomorrow for his work up
and skin scrape
Cross paws it is just ick skin! :crossed:
:crossed: That its easy to sort so the poor boy feels better real soon.
Just wondering how the vet visit went. Keep us posted. I hope he's not too bothered by the skin issues! Poor guy.
So...the boy is a doll but, he is a mess.
Big time!

He has a major staph/bacterial skin infection.
Happy it is not mange but, just as nasty if not worse!
(good thing not contagious so, he can play with our dogs)
He will be fine in time...

Sad news as we finished his shave down he has a mass on his hip.
Back to the vet tomorrow!
He is heartworm negative as well..big yippee for that! :D

I would love to thank his special sponsor for helping us get this boy
into rescue!

These dogs could not be saved without support!!!!
