torn pads - again

Miley tore the pads of her feet Friday (I think it happened at dog day care) - I didn't notice right away but Sat. morning she would not go outside or eat and was really licking her feet. She growled when I tried to get a closer look. So off to the emergency vet we went. The vet needed to put her under to clean up the pads on all 4 feet - 3 were very bad and needed to have loose skin removed on the central pad about half way up as the skin tore and created a flap.

The emergency vet warned that this was going to be a painful healing process.

This is the second time Miley has torn her pad to the point of needing vet care. I don't know why it happens. This time the vet thought she was playing on aspalth surface at dog day care - I will check on Tuesday. Friday was a nice day here mid 70's so I would not have thought anything about hot asphalt. I am not sure how to prusue this with the dog day care becuase Jasper was there at the same time and is just fine.

So my question is are some dogs feet more sensitive than others. Miley does not have as much pigment in her feet than Jasper as some toes are more grey than black.

I can tell I am missing something in her foot care - I just don't know what it is. Miley tends to get little nicks and cuts more often as well. I just would like to have a better preventive plan so I can avoid the serious abrasions.

We were sent home with Rimadyl and Tramadol and she has no appetite with them. I can get her to eat with putting some treats in but otherwise she just ignores the food. I am trying to back off on the Tramadol but she is still growling if I get near her feet. I can tell they are still painful.

Thanks for the advice.

That's too bad :(

Maybe Miley is a slider when she stops or pivots. Like a cutting horse does their stops and turns :?:
I hope she heals up quickly.
My only pad experience was when my chocolate lab Macy burnt hers off. We had pulled down our old barn and burned the remains, she decided to go mousing and ran into a hot corner that still had embers a few days later :( :( Thankfully, she was a very stoic, sweet girl and tolerated the cream and wraps well. It still was horrid.
Oooh :( That sounds painful

I hope she heals up well soon and you get to the bottom of the problem
Does Miley lick or chew her feet a lot?
When my Dalmo's allergies flared up and he was always licking his feet he got a blister on one pad that did the same as Mileys and tore. I .wondered if all the licking and moisture made the skin much softer so it blisters easier. Must admit due to personal experience I blistered the entire back of both heels years ago when cross country skiing. My socks got damp and they literally rubbed all the skin of my heels once the skin got wet and soft. And yes as your vet warned it was extremely painful. I had to wear flip flops for weeks in winter. Brrrrr.
I changed his food to Proplan sensitive skin and stomach and started washing his feet in a medicated shampoo called Malaseb. You soap it on, leave it for 10 minutes then rinse it off every 3 days. In between at Lisaoes's recommendation I used baby powder with zinc to try to keep his pads dry.
PM me if you want the ingredients in the shampoo. Obviously you'll have to wait till Miley's feet heal before you start that regime.
Rastus HATES me bathing his feet and DH has to hold him still, but we did lots of treat training while the blister healed just giving him treats if he would let us look at them and then worked up to touching them etc.
He runs to the pantry for his cookie after the shampoo and again after the rinse. Luckily I have cookies that dont make his feet itch.
He is so much better after just a few weeks. No more blisters and he hardly ever licks his feet now.
Good luck with Miley, hope you can figure out how to stop it.
Poor Baby must be so sore.

There is nothing you can do at the moment till the paws heal up but when they do Try something like this http://musherssecretwax.com/images.html
for protection of her pads. It might help her after with just a bit of a barrier between her pads and surfaces like ashphalt especially if the yard they play in, in doggie day care is a surface like that, easily done if she is charging around chasing and playing with other doggies.

Sometimes they dont realise what they can do to their paws when excitement keeps the adrenalin and fun pumping through them.

It wont hurt to try after she has healed up, few paw waxes on the market to help her pads and give maybe a bit of protection to stop it happening again.

If she is not eating due to being so sore then hard to give her medication to her on an empty tum tum. You might just have to wait till you can tempt her to eat something so you can give her, her pain relief.

Thinking of you both.
Poor girl :( I'd definitely try the paw waxes even just for everyday use if she has thin skin on her paw pads. Maybe boots or socks for daycare? Or just tell the day care not to let her do whatever she was doing when the injury happened. It may be better for her to stay home in a gated off room or a crate rather than day care.
I have some paw wax but the directions say to wipe off before letting them in the house. I was sorta worried about that part so I stopped using. But I guess I will start again after she heals up.

Miley does have allergies so I wonder if there is a link there. She has both food and environmental so something could be blooming that is irritating her. I have not noticed her licking her feet alot but maybe I just don't notice.

I checked and no asphalt at the dog daycare just pea gravel. I can't figure out what she did. When I changed the bandages it was not looking very good but that may just be me (I could never be a nurse !).
With the Paw wax a very thin layer and should be OK to use even when walking inside, trick is just a light smear to coat the pads.

Although cant be used till pads are completely healed up.

Some of the paw waxes are made of Botanical soothing stuff in them as well, if you google lots of different brands and some are better then others for Mileys situation.

Gravel can be just as hard on there tootsies too especially if flying around playing and all excited. They dont realise what they are doing in the fun moment of charging around with other doggies.

Mileys pads will take time, always looks worse after, just keep it very paded for comfort for her standing etc and sterile while healing up. You can even put swad pads on the bottom of her paws then cotton socks over just for a change from the bandages. Paded swabs will also cushion her sore pads while the healing process is ongoing and pure cotton socks breath and lets the air in.
