Holy Grooming Blades, Batman!

I finally took the plunge and bought a clipper. It comes with, what I believe is the standard #10 blade.

And, oh, wow! There are just TONS of different sizes of blades!! I saw that the smaller the number, the more hair is left. I also noticed that blades are mighty pricey.

I'm sure that I would never require all the blades that there are for my two sheepies and my long haired cat (I plan on giving him a lions cut next summer).

What size blades do you use? For the sanitary areas, would you suggest the 10?

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

I have a #3 3/4 blade for doing all over cuts and a #7 for some of the more matted areas. I don't care for a bald dog so I never use the #10 all over but if you have a super matted dog it would come in handy. You can use the #10 for the sanitary areas but just be careful. It's an easy area to give razor burn and they'll wind up licking like crazy for days.

Now that I've shaved dogs enough to get the hang of what works, I have two each of the blade so I can swap out while I'm working when one gets hot. It makes things a lot easier.
I use the 10 for sanitary needs as it slips under dingleberries. I also use a 10 on their lower legs and feet, then switch to a 7 or 5. I'm still playing with the 3 3/4 for the body.
Do you find the combs slip or pop off the blades? I can't get the combs to stay on...am I doing something wrong??
I don't use combs as I found them more trouble. Fine for cutting DH's hair but not dogs.....hmmmmm :lmt: I do know you need an extra fine blade under a comb, higher # than a 10 perhaps why I've had trouble. If you want a shaggier dog, best to scissor clip, IMHO. Like a barber, section, cut, comb, section, cut, comb.
Comb work best on animals with less hair than your wonderful OES's. They aren't meant to go through thick hair.

The best blade to use under a comb is a #30.

Andis claims that the best blade to use on an OES is a #4.

When clipping a cat, keep one thing in mind. Clipper blades are meant to cut hair. Cats have fur. Many blades may not work when attempting to clip a cat, due to the fur.

Oh and ouch speaking of blades...
I had 3 wrapped up to clean and I accidentally
tossed them in the trash...
I love my #10, #5, #4 and #40...
#40 should not be used often...it is a surgery cut!
We use the #10 a lot because most dogs we get into rescue are terribly matted. The #10 makes an OES coat feel like a baby seal.

Yesterday an OES was surrendered that was partially clipped by the owner and without many mats. I used a #4 blade on him, which left him looking a bit furry and evened things out nicely.

I have a set of clipper combs that rarely gets used. As Richard said, they don't go through thick hair well and especially not through mats of any kind. There are some combs that stay on the clippers better than others. Most groomers that use them seem to prefer the Wahl stainless steel combs.
I have been using a #3 and a 3F and I just love the results.

Ouch. I've had to dig for mine too when swapping out blades. I don't use the cooling spray anymore... it seems to bog down the blades.

I use the #3, #4, #5, #7 (early summer)... I like the skip tooth best. And the #10 fannies. I use a palm clipper for pads.

If you use the comb attachments, I found the spring loaded ones stay in place best... the snap on ones always seemed to fall off. I also found you need to go against the grain and make sure the dog is completely combed out before you start. Even when the dog is completely brushed out, I have to take off the comb to remove hair that plugs up access to the blade below. I lift the fur I'm clipping and go through it and then go over it again to even it out. It's so much easier clipping without using combs.

My BC-mix has super soft, plush fur... I've never felt such a soft coat on a dog. As mentioned above, it's really hard to clip soft fur like this. I used a #4 on her recently but it took some time. I had to bathe and dry her, then clip her again to make it as even as possible. http://oesusa.com/Maggie-Sept2009.jpg
