Getting ready for my 5K

Later this afternoon, I'll be walk/running a 5K. Yes, I'm really too old to do this, but I've made a committment.

Yes I walk on my treadmill 3x a week. 2 miles @ 3.5 - 3.8 mph. But...it's such a controlled walk. The 5K is in a very hilly area. But, I made a committment.

I challenged my members to do this particular walk....never thinking they would take me up on it. Guess what? About 20 of them accepted the challenge! I am incredibly proud of them. Some of them have done 5Ks before, some, have rarely walked a block.

So...poor old me...I have to be stoic. I can't sweat. I have to run a good part of the race and look like I'm not dying...to set a really good example.

I'm really excited, deep down. And I'm really looking forward to it. I'm so proud to be in the company of my members.

And..the best part....the race ends at Mickey Finn's tavern...and we will all use our optional 35 points, and our activity points and celebrate our achievement together!

Wish me luck!!!! :crossed:

OY VEY!!!!!
Not that I would expect all Leaders to do this, BUT, one of the 6 Leaders I have had in my 6 year W.W. journey, actually ran a Marathon. I live on the East coast and my Leader (2004 vintage) flew to San Diego to run a Marathon out there. I keep myself happy walking Bailee Boy 4 to 5 miles a day and I walk once a year to raise $$$$ for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. That one is coming up on Oct. 4th. I'd like to take Bailee along but he may still be a little too friskie and jump up on some of the other Walkers. Maybe next year.
you will feel sooooo great once you finish! good luck!
Very proud of you sis paw!
You are not too old to do anything!
Think of all the great things you are
just now venturing into!!!!
:ghug:
GOOD LUCK!!
Good luck, and a brisk walk instead of running will help you keep a good pace and not wear out too fast! Easier on the joints too....
Are you finished yet?
Are you still out celebrating??
Hope it went well....
It went amazingly well! I couldn't believe how many members showed up!

I walked/sprinted. At the 2 mile mark, I realized, my socks were not my friends, that they were killing my feet! Who knew there is such a thing as proper runner's sock, and that you need to stay away from terry cotton socks.

First of all...WHEN DID LIBERTYVILLE, ILLINOIS GET SO HILLY?

Somewhere along the route, someone had a sprinkler aimed in the street. My initial reaction was...what an idiot! Don't they know there is a race going on? My second reaction (as I ran through the sprinkler) BLESS THEIR HEARTS :hearts: !!!!!!! It was just what I had needed.

I ran around a corner and one of the volunteers yelled....this is the POWER corner...go! go! go! The people cheering us on (the volunteers and the people who lived in the neighborhoods) were fabulous! The whole route was lined with people just screaming their hearts out. And the kids! HOW ADORABLE!!!! So many people were out there offering water and encouragement.

And then it occured to me....I had passed most of my members (with the exception of the ones that ran the whole thing)! Me! 59 1/2 year old me! Left the youngins in the dust!

One more corner....I saw the 3 mile marker! OH NO! That's right! It's not 3 miles, IT'S 3.2 MILES! I'M NOT THERE YET!

Gotta run the rest of the way....run, jane, run. And then I saw it! The FINISH line! RUN, JANE, RUN, SPOT, RUN DICK, RUN, DEBORAH!!!!

And I finished to a bunch of cheering people!!!!! And..I certainly wasn't the last to finish! I ran the 5K in 46.0 minutes (first 5k thank you very much!) And I was 728 out of 1124 runners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Probably very disappointing stats for some, but I was thrilled!

And it was so sweet to be at the finish line to cheer most of my members across. We all smelled like pigs...and we all hugged and celebrated each others victories.

It was a great...no, fabulous experience. And then they informed me, there is another local 5k Oct. 18th.......

Oy............

Gotta go take some advil now!

And such is an obsession born.

Way to go, kiddo! :yay:
