Rough play

Hi Everyone,

My dog is such a rough player. I am afraid that one of these days he will play with a dog that won't be so understanding, and that will cost him an eye. My dog is not one of the laid back sheepdogs that people are talking about. He is very bouncy, and full of energy, and loves to pull other dogs by their tails. Please if you have any suggestions how to stop this behavior I will greatly appreciate any advice.

Best,

Magdalena

You really can't stop them (been there, done that, got trampled  ) You just don't let them play with dogs who can't handle it. Which includes most non-OES or at least any dog smaller than them or with a shred of dignity or a lack of tolerance for boisterous, obnoxious behavior or....

I can't remember the last time a non-OES wanted to play with one of my guys. Do you know if there are other OES in your area? Perhaps you can arrange play dates?

There are laid back sheepdogs? Under the age of 12? 8O :P

If you go to the section called playdates (if you're interested) and declare your location, maybe there's someone on the forum in your area.

Just a thought. Or arrange to meet up with people who have other breeds/dogs you already know will tolerate your rough-houser. There are some. And some times as they mature they mellow some and play less roughly. Though to be honest, that doesn't seem to happen with mine until they're, well, at least ten or so.

I take it your OES is an only dog?

Chewie's favorite "play rough" playmate is a female rottweiler who can block just as hard as he does. They have a blast! :D
Thank goodness Lily and Lola have each other. They are perfectly matched in energy and willingness to roll around. When Lola is sick, poor Lily doesn't know what to do with herself.

Actually he plays like a crazy dog with Marley - for seconds at a time :)

The other day he deigned to play with Beowulf -and played like a crazy sheep dog which put the 160 pound Newf in an instant four feet in the air submissive position.
You could always crazy play with him!

You know, I've tried this and ended up with paw prints on my forehead...And that's when they didn't play human bowling! (been there, done that too)

Hm :lmt:

This is not exactly a dainty breed.

Except for Kerry's Morgan :sidestep:

(Poor Beowulf - he was probably in shock    I've never seen a Newf play possum  )

Thank you everyone, especially Kristie. He has a few playmates that he plays rough with, but the owners of the other dogs are getting a little concern. Soon, no one will like him ; (
I will check out if anyone that owns a sheepdog is in my area, and yes Paxton is my only dog. ..... he eats my walls I am not willing double that. Two sheepdogs would be way too much to handle.

Best,

Magda
Kristine, sorry : ) for miss spelling your name!
I crazy play with Archie - when he gets out of hand I wind him up further  he looks forward to our WWWoof  I do have a few battle scars though :D
