Grinding teeth

Bogey, my almost 4 month old, does something strange with his teeth. when he was having his temperature taken (during a time he was sore in the area) he was grinding his teeth. I have heard him do this at times - sometimes when he is playing with his older sister - sometimes when excited to see someone and cannot get to them because of other dogs there first. I hope I am explaining this clearly.

Has anyone had a puppy grind their teeth? could this be part of teething? never heard this before with other pups.

I never thought about dogs doing that. Does your puppy have a normal bite?
I'd question the bite too is it looking normal? Also he will be teething at that age make sure there is plenty of hard things for him to chew on for him to lossen up those baby teeth and for relief crunching. ie a good raw meaty bone or a hard dog bikkie, even a stuffed kong.

Have a look at the gums also to see not overly swollen and sore at the moment and that the baby teeth are coming away OK, grinding I would associate with being very sore in the mouth at the moment.

Any doubts then off to the vets to see.
Heart did the same thing when she came to me, for about the first week when she was sleeping...I thought it was strange at the time too and had to really watch and listen to her to make sure I wasn't imagining it....
Bogey did his grinding of teeth at puppy class last night - once. We checked his gums and teeth - nothing unusual. his bite seems normal now. but he only has the puppy teeth
thanks for all the thoughts. i wonder if this could be a nervous habit
he does not do it often
Is he grinding them, like a human would, or sort of chattering (almost like he's cold?)

I'm guessing you would have said so if that was the case, but I can't envision a dog grinding their teeth, so I'm trying to get a better picture in my mind of what he's doing.

Thanks!
Kristine
Chattering isn't uncommon when they get excited or nervous. Grinding, in a pup with all the changes happening in their bodies especially teeth, jaws, etc.......it might be normal....or his version of chattering what with all the excitement.

I agree, encourage chewing/gnawing to help with the teeth exchange and to relieve normal dog needs to chew. Still, bring it up with the vet at next visit.
