Help...Kody has something wrong with his ears.

Ok, not sure how to describe this but I will try and maybe someone else has seen or heard of this problem. Both of the inside ear flaps have what I will call a "Fluid Bubble" on them...they squish, are not red or discolored and don't seem to hurt him. They kind of remind me of the old TB test bubbles that they would put under our skin to test for TB. Because they just look like fluid is building up in a little pocket...the location is almost exactly the same place on both ears. He has been scratching a lot due to our battle with fleas but not a lot on his ears (thanks to a new next door neighbor who thinks her two dogs don't get fleas  )..Kody is faithfully treated with Frontline plus as well as having our yard sprayed. Any ideas as to what this is? They are not getting larger nor smaller, just kinda weird. My vet gets back in town this Friday and I will be taking him to see her then...but in the meantime if anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would appreciate it.

Sounds like a ear hematoma which will need vet consultation. Having been through a battle with fleas and now bubbles on the ear flaps definately sounds hematoma to me.

A bubbly fluid pocket forms, then if they keep scratching it fills with blood and then can burst. Hard to clear them up if you read the thread below yours on a burst blood vessel it will explain what happens and the procedure that needs to be done to correct the hematomas.

Best of luck and definately a vet trip for Kody. Keep an eye on it, dont allow him to shake his head, rub his ears against things or even attempt to scratch it should be fine till your vet gets back
Violet had a similar problem a few months ago. As Lisa said it was a hematoma (busted blood vessel). Violet's ear was very swollen when I took her into the Vet. My Vet told me there was two ways of handling it:
1. leave it alone and it will go away. The down side is tha ear could "pucker", but the new thought is to leave it alone.

2. Is surgery, which the have to cut the ear and drain. You can imagine all that is involved in that.

I chose to leave her ear alone. I had a few things to cosider:
1. Surgery is serious
2. Surgery in our warm climate here in Florida could lead to an infection of some type.

Violet's hematoma went down with in a couple of days and her ear looks great.
We also had this many years ago with my first OES. We opted for the surgery because it seemed to be painful. They did lance it and drain it and my poor boy came home with his head wrapped up like a World War II veteran. But he was okay after that.

I would go with what the Vet recommends. And if for some reason it bursts between now and the Vet visit, be sure to clean it well so not to get infected. But beware, if it does burst, the open would will probably hurt a bit so clean with something gentle. Good luck.
Been there more times than I care to mention. Paige was the worst. Multiple surgeries and still the ear puckered. I've never heard of leaving the ear alone, but if it doesn't bother the dog to do so, consider strongly. Otherwise you are talking surgery and e-collar time........not something I enjoy (currently living thru that now) .

Caused by head shaking and ears at higher velocity and forcing more blood into tiny ear vessels that rupture. This is the reason why ears can not be allowed to become extra dirty or infected and allergies treated...all to eliminate head throw and resulting "bubbles."
A great alternative to the E collar is the comfy cone collar. We used it recently and it was much nicer for the dog. Plus, it didn;t bang up the walls! I tried the doughnut collar you inflate, but that didn't really work and didn't seem comfortable for the dog. The "comfy cone" was great and you can wash it if need to re use.

They see them at Petco but not the bigger sizes. You can order on line at a site www.smartpakcanine.com.

I think some other on line places sell it as well...Sit/Stay, KV Pet and some other places. Run about 25 or 30 bucks if I remember right.

My Vet had said that leaving Violet's ear alone was a new thought that the Vets have been trying. Violet's ear healed in no time and looks great. At the time of the hematoma the ear flap was swollen from top to bottom. I was very happy to have a progressive Vet...sad when he retired last month.
My first OES had to have surgery on her ear flaps due to hematoma. She seemed to be prone to ear infections and I always had her at the Vet.
Just wondering how Kody's ears are????
Well we got Kody into the vet as soon as she was back in town, she looked at his ears and said they really weren't that bad at all. The left ear was about as big around as a quarter and the one on the right was about the size of a pea. The conclusion was that she wanted me to wait to see what happened with them because she didn't see any blood pooling under the skin. She said if it continued she would first try using a needle to suction it out with out doing surgery. If that didn't work then she would have to lance it and so forth an so on. She just suggested that I keep him from hitting his ears, and shaking his head. I laughed asked her at that point if she had ever owned a sheepie...since Kody is #1 a Klutz and #2 a maniac when he goes outside since he thinks the whole world should see him and know he is there! So anyway I have changed a few things at home...the main one being that when I water the plants he is no longer allowed outside to run in between me and the hose. I hated to do this to him since he loves playing in the water so much but I want to make sure that his ears at least heal first. And with the shaking he does after his run in the water is just not worth it. So now he sits inside the back door cussing me out in doggy language because he's not out there with me as I water. The other thing I did was to remove the coffee table out of the family room so that when he decides it's time to chase the cat he wouldn't bash his head into it. :( Thanks again for all the support, you guys are great

oooh, I've heard those words too, many times    Hope the big boy heals quickly and can return to the hose and water sports.
    Tiggy too!!
She's not allowed out when we hose the back because she attacks the stream of water, gets in the way when we scrub and comes in all wet and filthy.
After just finishing scrubbing the courtyard I'm not ready to wash and blow dry a sheepie in full coat.
She runs up and down the back glass doors barking loudly. I guess she's yelling those cuss words at me.
