It's raining cysts

Remember Glacier had the giant cyst break open on her tail, now Jack's elbow cysts are open. I'm grossed out.

Glacier's tail is just awful. She'll have to see the vet tomorrow. Imagine not one, but two two big holes in the tail, and a partial cyst hanging off the side, a dog who is trying to get to the tail........where's the e-collar!!, more vetwrap and gauze every few hours, gross.

Then this afternoon Jack disturbed my nap with constantly slurp, slurp. When I saw he was working on his front left leg I just knew........yep his elbow pillow cyst is open.......you can look right inside.

Let's hope the vet can see Glacier tomorrow, the wound need attention and I need reassurance this will heal up. As for Jack........he's on his own for awhile. It's not bleeding, just ugly.

I won't sleep well listening for Glacier diving for her tail and wondering what I'll use after the gauze runs out, at least I should have enough vetwrap.

Ugh! The last cyst Morgan had pop (it was small and I wasn't even really aware it was there)- the vet told me to make sure it drained - squeeze it - and apply peroxide a few trimes a day. Yep peroxide I asked twice.

He didn't even want to see him. We ended up int here a week later for another reason and the vet checked it out - it was fine and has healed up nicely.

One thing to think about in the future, Morgan developed two cysts on his back after some nasty big bites and the vet put drains in them. it was sort of gross for a few days, but they healed up and went away nicely.

Good luck
Yep peroxide!!!
One of my cats had a huge cat bite abscess that needed 4 drain tubes. They got all clogged up and when I took her back to the vet he was syringing peroxide directly in to the abscess through the tubes. 8O
The cat wasnt happy.
But I dont think I would have been either, the peroxide went all fizzy when it hit the abscess gunk. Blah :P
pouring peroxide into a cat's cyst.........now that must have been exciting and loud!

I wish I could say we are going forward with Glacier, but can't. I put her in an e collar......but it looks a bit small and since......with wedging and really turning her fat body, she can get to her tail. I'm missing 2 gauze pads I think she ate. There are multiple holes, one major one I could put my finger into..if I was so inclined. All I can do is wash and wrap until Paul takes her in on Monday. Let's hope I have enough vet wrap since it is Sunday and the animal mercantile is closed.

If there's peroxide in her future, I hope they sedate her first. I suspect they'll also shave a wide band around the mess, something I can't bring myself to do.......I've trimmed away hair, but no hair free barrier. I accidently shaved all the hair off her tail end awhile ago...she was not pleased. Who knew her Pyr tail came to a "pencil point".

Yep, a loud wrestle to avoid claws!
I hope the vet wrap supplies last. Good luck with the whole icky mess, hope it clears up fast. :crossed:
Wow, I've been using peroxide on my dogs for years, and haven't had any problems. I use it on myself as well - Always have. If I get a cut, I head straight for the peroxide. I used it last year on hot spot Loki would not leave alone - soaked a gauze pad in peroxide and put it on his leg with vet tape - It was gone in two days. I've never had it sting on me when I use it, so I just naturally use it on the dogs. It really does work.
Well you know cats!!!
It probably didnt sting just felt cold and weird to have anything syringed in under the skin. The abscess hadnt burst it just had 4 drain tubes in it.
I have been told peroxide burns new cells........but if it is for initial cleaning, that's probably OK. But for continual wound cleaning, I dunno....

We'll see what the vet does to Glacier today. DH gets the honors as I must be present for baking today, I'm in charge and the newspaper is coming to do a piece. Of course the yiayias are bailing, "I don't want my picture in the paper...." Gee, I had hoped to stay in the wash area and run the dishwasher ............

"yiayia" is grandmother or just older woman
Hope things get better after the vet visit today. Poor thing.

...and hopefully the baking can take your mind off things ;)

I was told the same thing when Bonkers had an open wound.
OK next time a cyst breaks, no delay.........off to the vet. Even though it looked OK for several days, it wasn't. When I suspected something wrong, we couldn't get an immediate appointment and the 3 days made it worse. Unless we can get the infection under control thru 2x a day flushing with Chexachlora-something and big doses of Cephalaxin, she could be a bobtail Great Pyrenees. At 12 years old, it not something I'd like to see happen to this sweet dog.

Fingers crossed :crossed: :crossed: :crossed:

Cookie baking went very well. Many helpers today. Newspaper came and went, 3,000 hand formed cookies made. I guess I was too concerned about Glacier, I kept glancing at my watch waiting to hear from DH, because doing the pots and pans afterward has done me in for the rest of the day. Nap time
Fingers and paws crossed here for sweet Glacier! :crossed: :plead: Poor baby!
I hope it goes well.

I am a bit crazed about cysts and do make appointments way too often to have them looked at.
especially if it's an internal cyst....if they break internally, that's a real mess.

This was more "surface" and broke -out-not in. Guess when they break, get to vet even if you have much experience handling wounds. Antibiotics immediately would have been a good idea and a good flushing. Actually initially it looked as if it had blown all the goo out....mayb not.
Ewwww... hope everything heals up fast.
Poor thing, I hope it heals quickly.
I think we are going to need some of that sympathy.........flushing a wound, what fun when it's the tail, near the pooper, she sits, she bucks, she expresses her anal glands. When finished the floor......for get the bucket.......is covered with gross stuff. She's probably uncomfortable so scrapes her ecollar up and down the hall walls.......duct tape predominates on the ecollar now from splitting. The boys are upset and not settling, MO and DH sound asleep. I just put her outside and she's into the mindless Pyr barking mode. Gee, just 5 more hours and we get to flush again...........
Hey she is allowed to be cranky cause she cant scratch or lick the oooozie hole near her butt .

Poor possum hope it heals up OK real soon.

Ma brandy helps the stress  :P

I had no luck with Kelsey and her Cyst on the side that exploded, needed surgery in the end after the blasted thing kept drying up, filling up and POP again 3 times. Oooooh gross cant believe how much pussy bloody ooozey goop can come out of those things. 8O

(pssst hope no one is eating at the moment when reading this post 8) )
Bassets are really prone to these cysts as well. Our 1st basset in our married life - Daisey - had one pop. Goopy drainage, ended up infected as well. It was on her shoulder - between the withers and elbow. She rubbed it on stuff and it got infected. Nearly impossible area to bandage and keep clean too. Once the surgery was done, she healed up perfect. And, one never came back either!

best wishes.

Oh if an amputation does happen, she can share company with Hank the basset. He belongs to a friend and he had one that never would heal and he is so much happier now. Dealing with chronic infections were miserable for him. He actually looks a bit like a corgi from the back now!
I hope every thing goes well...kisses and hugs from Heart.....

I had to take Heart to the vet last night.

On Sunday, I was petting her and she had a bump the size of half of a marble!!!! Of course being me...I obsessed about it all Sunday night and finally got an appointment for 4 on Monday. Turns out to be a cysts. The vet said that when they poked it...all kinds of junk came out...((they wouldn't let me go with her))~~ but he said she was very good and they did not have to shave her too much, which is good. Gave me antibiotics for the next week and told me it would probably fil up again and it would have to be removed...   I expect my 13 year old to get bumps and tags and warts...But Heart????.....   I am so glad it was really nothing to worry about... :phew:
I have had a few with Morgan - one (or two removed) two drained (not aspirated they put in drains), one burst (the smallest of all of them).

I recommend having drains put in whenever possible - and a lot of vets don't volunteer that. the two that we had drains put in were the largest two and they never came back.

But I am all about making the vet rich by taking them in as soon as I find a cyst, hey the economy needs the boost

She'll be fine - you might want to have a nice relaxing drink with your feet up.
So why didn't my vet mention we ought to have the giant cyst aspirated? Of course the dog didn't complain, but knowing now what a mess we'd get into, I would have insisted.

Jack and MO have more internal cysts....more skin and ?? fat covering them. You bet I'm going to start measuring those and if they start to grow, they get drained.

Jacks elbow cysts have cleared themselves up. He's no longer whimpering when he climbs onto the furniture or licking himself "pink". the cysts will be back, they always return.

Bad night last night. We irrigated the hole in Glacier's tail, but must have caused an irritation. She huffed and puffed, paced the floor and scraped the walls with her collar. After one outside time where the barked constantly (well, she is a Pyr), I finally said, to hell with it, put her out, moved to sleep on the other side of the house and put 2 pillows over my head  Hour later DH woke me up to say we needed to clean out the tail again before he went to work. Not a job for 3:30 a.m.

Bought more e-collars and will try the soft collar....they didn't have the giant size who I hope this one will fit. Hope it works as my shins and walls need a break.
What a time you're all having of it!!!!!
Hope it gets better soon so you can all go back to getting a good nights sleep and bruiseless shins.
Well, the tail will remain on the dog  At 12 years old I'm not sure she would have survived amputation.

The irrigations continue. The solution got into her panties and she now has a ranging case of dermatitis. So while she is mostly calm with the tail work, the skin goop over the red butt dog is very painful. Pyrs don't really cry out, but in extreme cases they moan.

There is light at the end of this tunnel, but the vet did put the dog into a larger e-collar......I was so looking forward to switching over to the soft e-collar, but it is too small.

In a few days irrigation should stop and natural dry healing should begin, the collar to remain on. I will be happy not to stumble out of bed at 3:30 a.m. for tail duty.

Patience,patience.
You deserve a medal for 3.30am tail duty that saved the tail.
Glad that things are getting better in the tail department and hope the dermatitis gets better quickly. :crossed:
WOW, what an amazing amount of dedication. Glacier is a lucky pup! I feel ya on the 3:30am stuff. Lola needed that for awhile.
Finally, the E-collar came off yesterday. Everyone is pleased. The tail lump grew together in a cleft, but it's pretty much closed...we'll have to clean every once in awhile.......

But no sooner get that end fixed and she develops a red eye. 2 years ago she had several - four long medical terms - red lumps on her lower eyelid. They were not harmful. Well, they may now be on her 3rd eye lid and causing irritation. Hopefully they are the same 4 long medical terms (even this new vet has not heard) and not more common eye tumors.

Good thing she shows no emotion when at the vet as I fear we'll be spending more time there as she is now a very senior dog.
oh no!

Best wishes that this resolves. :ghug:
Darn, hope things can get sorted out easily. :crossed:
It's so tough when they get old, they seem to go from problem to problem :(
