I think this si common. When dogs are excited or after exercising, they tend to want to drink up alot of water quickly. Makes them vomit. But I should ask...is it vomitting? Is there that horrible renching sound first? Or is it, drink up the water and then sort of spit it out without wrenching? If it is really attempting to vomit,( that horibble wretching noise) I would see the Vet. if its sort of spitting it out, its common.

Its advised to give small amounts of water at a time if dog is excited. If she is coming out of the cage after a few hours without water, drinking it all quickly? Have some water available all day in the crate. Give small amounts when she comes out. Not too cold. Not ice water.

My dogs do this also. Now I make them "rest" a few minutes after exercising before water. Then I put about a glass full in their bowl. wait a few minutes and do the same thing. So its all not drank at one time too quickly while they are still heated.
Heart does this a lot...especially when she drinks and drinks...I can guarentee that some of the water will come back...((along with food bits>>>yuckcckckckck!!)) I have found that if I let her drink...then say...ENOUGH!!! wait a couple of minutes and let her drink again she won't throw it back up....
We also say "That's ENOUGH!" with Ru, because he will keep drinking until he makes himself sick, actually it doesn't take much so we keep a close eye on him drinking. I think it's normal for sheepies, it comes without wretching.
i would soak Harleys kibble in water, prior to feeding. Stella always used to gulp water down and then she had problems, so my vet suggested this. it's a way for them to get more water in their system so they are less likely to get sooooo thirsty that they gulp water all at once.
I think the youngies are more prone to this. After awhile maturity sets in and they can hold it down.....then they start becoming seniors and it returns. You might want to go with smaller water bowls so they can't over do at one gulp.
I alwys worry about bloat. I feed both my dogs twice a day instead of once. The puppy ( 1 year old) gets hers soaked. I soak it in warm water for about 20 minutes. The drain the excess water and feed. She gets only a small amount of water immediately after eating.

The older one ( 2 ) hates soggy food. So I don't soak his. But he also gets fed twice a day and I leave only a small amount of water out. he finishes that, we wait about half and hour and then give a little...then a little more...

The kibble when soaked will double its size. which is what it will do in the tummy. I think if your dog will eat it, no matter what age, its best to soak the kibble before serving. We also "rest" after meals before a walk and definately before any exercise.
This is fairly common and Winnie will vomit if she drinks water too quickly. If I know she is thirsty, I'll give her a little water then wait and give her some more. That seems to avoid the problem. And this is not unique to OES - my English Springers had the same issue.
Okay....i haven't heard of the soaking food but i am definitely going to try that....and smaller amounts of water...Thanks for the tips...and if it continues i will obviously take him to the vet...another thing he is 8 months old right now...when "should" he grow out of this do you think?
Portage does the same thing. He didn't when he was younger, but now he's often water obsessed. He'll drink whatever is left in the bowl so we put out smaller bowls now, and will interrupt him when he's drinking. Even if it's a few minutes between visits to the bowl it seems to help. It's just a little harder with the two dogs because we have to make sure Hudson gets some too.

We also do the food soak. I don't know if it helps with the drinking or not, but it does seem to make swallowing his food easier. With his health issues, I find dry food seems to make him hoark while eating and it's easy enough to soak it. However, if I forget to pop even one bubble on the surface (gross) of the soaked food, it doesn't meet Prince Portage's exacting standards and the royal nose will be turned up at it.

His brother had a similar aversion to soup. We'll drink liquids and eat solids, but put both in the same bowl and heads will roll.

Aren't they all just a little nuts?
ya i tried the soaking and he def didn't like it....but he did throw up today with something interesting in his puke...so maybe it was that? not sure if it happends more i will be taking him to the vet....hoping this is over with though...i have also started only giving him tiny amounts of water...no more filling the bowl...we will see i guess...

thanks everyone
Just an update...I took harley to the vet did some blood work everything is fine so they told us to just elevate his food and water? so we will see what happends now?
Good luck! :crossed:
I forget how old your pup is...We soak our pup's food but not to the point where its mush. Just enough to help digest. Shwe also throws up after drinking water quickly. Its not really throwing up...here is the difference...vomitting comes with a sound that is like wrentching, prior to the actual vomit, it will sound like the dog is wretching, loud sound, a few times in a row, like something is caught..then, vomit.

Regurrgtation is more like, drink the water, walk away and plop, the water comes out. No real wretching, just like a BIG spit up...

Sorry for the graphics but sometimes people confuse vomitting with this regurgitation...hope I make sense!

We use an elevated bowl. Big controversy over levated or not elevated. We use one that is slightly elevated but not too much...

Hope things get better - which I think will as pup gets older.
