Thieving, stealing or crooked cashiers at the cash register.

Back in the mid 90's, the building where I worked was somewhat isolated -- it was on top of a hill with three other identical office builings on the far side of a reservoir. There was NOTHING within walking distance. Even if you wanted to hije up a big hill, you'd have to walk all the way around the reservoir to get anywhere there were other commercial buildings... the nearest restaurant was a few miles away. Isolated. So it had a small cafeteria for the workers.

After I had been there a few years, the cashier started to steal money. Observing her, I could see she was clearly stealing, clearing totals and making change from an open draw on her own when checking out the some customers, me included (MUCH to my chagrin). I checked my assumption on two occassions by asking for a receipt, and she'd then enter the amount for the lunch into the cash register again and actually ringing up the sale.

She was a single mom working as a cashier.

So now she has put me into an ethical dilemma: Do you tell the cafeteria's boss and she gets fired? Do you turn a blind eye? Is she experiencing severe financial hardship causing her to start doing this? Would telling and getting her fired make things bad/worse for her innocent daughter?

Remember, she was a single mom working as a cashier and she had been working there a long time and I sort of knew her well as I saw her and exchanged pleasantries as I paid for my lunch virtually every day.

What do you do?

I just don't have sympathy for that. I would have said something immediately to her boss. I guess I view it as... well if she really needed the job, she shouldn't have stole money. If she needed the extra money, there are always getting a sugardaddy. ;)
If this was that long ago (in the mid 90s) does she even still work there?
I guess it would depend on how I felt about the cashier...if I really liked her as a person, I might say " Um, hon...what you're doing is very obvious...you might consider stopping before someone tells your boss."

Otherwise...I dont know...Id hate to be a tattle-tale, but one other consideration is her coworkers...Ive been in situations working retail when I was younger where I was in a position to be blamed unfairly for someone else's dishonest behavior :(
Of the several recent big time thefts here, cooking the books, etc.......most of the time it is women.

I'm not buying the excuse, "they are single moms and need the money."

Theft is theft. Turning the blind eye just empowers them to steal more and more. And who has to make up the difference......you and me.
I'm sorry; I would say something. Stealing often hurts someone else, and there are always other ways to make ends meet. Whats to say that the person she was stealing from didn't also have a family to feed? Perhaps her starting to steal from her job, after having worked there for so long, was a sign of something major wrong in her life? Maybe drug use was an issue, and a wake up call could have helped her from getting too far down that path.

You never can know a person's motivations. Sure, you could ask; you could get get involved in their personal life. But I don't know that I would be able to turn a blind eye.
I'd be more likely to want to report the person who should be overseeing the stealing cashier.
Crustybirds, it was indeed a long time ago. I'm just reminiscing.

Well, I wrassled with the problem and agonized over the decision for weeks or months, and to tell you the truth I no longer recall what happened. I know I left after a total of 4 years at that location and I don't think I told anyone.

It wasn't a mom and pop organization she was working for, it was an industrial "mass feeder" (like Sysco or one of its competitors) although certainly other people's jobs and/or careers were being put into some amount of jeopardy by her actions.

What I do know is it made me acutely uncomfortable for a long time.

BTW, this is the complex:

My office was in the second building up. The hill is steep so you can't see the first building from the second. My office essentially looked out to where the camera is, across the reservoir. EVERY DAY I stopped to look out that window and remind myself of what a beautiful office it was and how lucky a person I was.

In addition to the view, the location was outside of Boston proper so I avoided almost all of rush hour traffic almost all the time, and parking was directly behind the building. So a quick walk across the internal road, into the entrance and up one flight up to the fourth(!) floor (it's on a hill -- the cafeteria was down on the first floor, as was daycare (not included as a benefit)).

The entrance on the "backside" of the building:

And OMG! This was the view!

You should see that view in the Autumn.

I left there and went to work in downtown Boston for the next 6 years, the first 5 driving my truck at 5:30 AM to the commuter rail station 8 miles away to catch the 6:05 to South Station and then walking a half mile, rain or snow or shine. Instead of a 35 minute drive I had an hour and a half inbound and an hour 15 outbound every day.

At least I UNDERSTOOD what it was that I was giving up -- besides, the company was starting to teeter -- the handwriting was on the wall -- the sword of Damacles was hanging over my head.
happened at the restaurant that has the rocking chairs in front at Piqua Ohio..
