New puppy throwing up

Hello,

My wife and I just got a 4 month old OES puppy a few days ago. He has been throwing up a bit (4 to 5 times over the past two days) Is this normal for a new puppy? We are thinking it might be due to the stress of moveing. He is drinking lots of water and pooping so food is getting processed. We will be taking him to the vet this comming week and get him checked out but just want to know if it warrents an emergency vet visit.

Thanks in advance!

In my experience throwing up is NOT normal. Runny poop yes, but not throwing up. If he is eating and drinking I would call my vet and see what he/she thinks-maybe they can get you in ASAP. Someone else might have more ideas.
Did you change the puppy's food from what he was eating at the breeders? If he's eating different food it might not agree with him.
Your vet will know all the questions to ask about his energy levels etc. so best to call and be certain.
Good luck and welcome. :D :crossed:
We are using the same food that the breeder was using but she failed to mention that she added hot water to the food to soften it. He seems to be keeping the mosit food down but we will be setting up an apointment with the vet this week just to be sure.

Thanks for the help!

:D
Best thing is to go to the vet just for a check as a precaution.

Also if guzzling water when hyped up or just after a meal guaranteed to throw up.

Rule of thumb, relaxed pupper when having water, also after a feed, give it awhile before water is given. Things like not worked up, over excited and especially after exercise when all huffy puffy to limit the amount of water or even wait till pupper is relaxed and not huffy puffy (Panting). Otherwise Blurp up it comes. 8O :?

Also if he is use to soaked dry then continue that for a little while.

No Temperature? Not lethargic? Still all bouncy? No Runny poops? If not then I just think it might be excitement of settling in to his new domain & guzzling water, so just monitor the water and when he drinks it that he is calm and relxed and also not just finished a large meal. After a drink relax time for a little while. :D
I also soaked my puppy's kibble before feeding. Just be sure to LET COOL. What may not seem too hot to your human touch can be too hot for puppy eating.
I think Lisa has it. Excitement and over indulgence. Slow down (yeah, I know, puppy), quiet time before meals, don't get them overly excited about the prospect. Quiet time afterwards.

Careful with the water. Never ice cold. Better to ration for a bit until you can understand his tummy.

You aren't trying to shove too much down him are you? Better to make it 4 or 5 feedings with smaller amounts than trying to cram too much into 3 meals.

Also is he wolfing down his meal? Eating too fast? You can slow them down by putting in very big object in the bowl so they have to work around the object, slowly.
We were feeding him 3 times a day but will move that to 4 or 5. We don't have a problem with him eating to fast thankfully. He can only concentrate on the food for a min or two before something else catches his attention. He does go back to it after a romp or two. Very hard to keep him calm and quiet!

He is far from lethargic and very bouncy. Poop seems normal and not runny. I'm not sure how to calm him down after water and a meal... he has endless energy and can make a game of almost anything!

Should I take any precautions with the heat? We live in a historic house without AC. We have a window AC in our bedroom and thats where we have put his crate but during the rest of the day he is down stairs in the heat. We have a fan setup which he loves but if heat is a problem I will look into getting another AC and confine him to that room.

Thanks for all the responses!
Theres part of your problem, eating then going for a romp before going back to finish.

Select a quiet area to feed him, pop the bowl down and after 10 minutes take it up if he has not finished it in one go or gets distracted and goes away from the bowl. This way also you are teaching your pup good eating manners. Whats left ditch and nothing till his next scheduled feed. He will then learn that when it is meal time its there to be eaten and not play time and back for more.

No overexcited or just been charging around before a meal. If need be crate him for 10-15 mins beforehand if he has been a hypa baby (which is typical for a baby OES Bouncy and on the go all the time ) before feeding him. After the meal, just limit the amount of water in the bowl for him to drink, especially if he is a guzzler, then offer more later about half an hour after food.

Return to the crate for a quiet time after a feed around 20 minutes before letting him out or even just in a room for relax time. Good practice to get into even when they are adults to lessen the risk of "Bloat" later in life.

Before A/C here I use to use a damp towel in the crate or on a tiled floor, which they laid on with a fan going and they were in full coats, worked well especially in our summer climate which can exceed 40' Celcius.

3 small meals a day is fine still as he is not a glutton woofing down the food too quickly
Or try feeding him in the crate.....let's hope he doesn't play hockey with the bowl afterwards

Yep if you can get him to settle down before, during and after feeding, then 3x is probably fine.

Make sure Jr. is getting enough exercise so he can settle down naturally and not have to self stimulate. I realize a 4 mo old never really settles down

Towel and fan would be loved here, if each dog wasn't already sprawled over a floor vent as it is......evaporative air, either thru the floor or the towel and fan. I'm saving this vent for me
You can also get a cooling mat from www.petedge.com. They come in several sizes, are inexpensive and all you do is soak in cold water for about 30 minutes, wring out and use. They stay cool for 2 days.
Hope your pup is doing better. No a/c...be srue to keep pup well hydrated. Bt not ice cold water and not too much all at once. We fill the bowl a bit with cool water. Once she drinks that up, we wait only a few minutes. Then fill with a bit more. So she always has cool water available, just not all at once. Hope I make sense! :)

Cool towel UNDER the belly will help. A lot of people put a cold towel over the top of the body. But it is under the belly that will cool them down.

We lived as kids with no a/c and survived! Ha ha...just no strenous exercise with the high temps. Hate to say it, but I am actually looking forward to the winter! 95 degrees here today with about 80 percent humidity!
my puppy had this problem when he was a couple months old. he threw up so much he got dehydrated. i took him to the vet and they put a fluid pack in his skin. he was better within a couple days.

hope this helps!
