phantom pregnancy

has anyone any experience with their bitch of this? Summer was in season May 19th, about 3 months ago. She is digging as I have said somewhere else on the forum but I am now wondering if she is trying to make a bed. She keeps grizzling to go out garden which she never does. She was also aggressive over a biscuit the other night with Tilly which isnt like her. Thanks

Yeah Marley was in season in the end of May and she has been digging on all the dog beds etc - a very new habit. I believe someone was adopting out a litter of socks from one of her bitches recently. Its a pretty common phenomenon.

And as I recall I offered you pick of the sock litter!!

Like Kerry said, it's not uncommon. A BC breeder once told me that bitches who experience false pregnancies are more prone to pyo (uterine infections) later in life. Not sure if that tends to generally hold true or not.

Mad had two false pregnancies when she was younger, consecutive seasons, and then no more. Of her two daughters that I have - Dawn's daughter, LeAnne, has a third and the fourth is spayed, so no useful data on her - only one of them inherited her mom's tendancy. Sybil, of course. She was in season in early July and no sign of it this time around, so no more socks to place I guess  My girls seem to just grow out of it.

They don't start to resource guard; they just get moody and broody, "deliver" their "litter". and then tend to it for a while till they lose interest. Mad had a small collection of stuffed toys, Sybil had to make do with my rolled up socks since she's a stuffie terminator. Of course, so is her mother, so about 4 days into tending to her litter hormones must have lifted because then she tore the "puppies" AKA stuffies apart. I mentioned to her breeder that perhaps we should reconsider breeding her 8O   But, of course, puppies are not stuffies and she was a good mom.

I.e. it's normal and you should start lining up homes for whatever she decides to call puppies (if she does) right away

Our coonhound Maggie went through a false pregnancy when she had her 1st heat cycle after we got her. She was about 1 1/2 yr old.

She had a collection of stuffed dog toys (her "puppies") and she guarded them with every shred of maternal instinct possible!
It thankfully passed in a couple weeks. We had her spayed after that, as was already planned.

I was watching my friend show her great dane puppy at the show last weekend. After she was done we watched the rest of the dane classes. There was a female who was going through a false pregnancy. She actually had milk come in. On one side only - the show side of course!
I had a great dane who went through a false pregnancy and adopted a litter of kittens. It was the funniest thing to see her carry them around, I would swear she'd swallow one whole with the tail sticking out of her mouth, but she was just bringing it back to it's bed.
After a while the kittens still approched her like she was "mom" but she'd chase them instead and the look of shock for those poor kittens... like WTH?!
Ru says he didn't do it :sidestep:
8O

you learn something new every day! I'd never heard of this; and find it pretty fascinating.

I have also heard that bitches that have a phantom pregnancy are more prone to pyometria.
I havent asked my vet about it though. :lmt:

All the statistic shows that to be true, especially on Maiden bitches who start having the phantoms after a heat and continues that pattern each time they have a heat there after, you will also find the phantoms each time get progressively worse, incidents of Pyometra are higher.
