Finally A Good Dog & A Happy Ending. There IS Hope!

I haven't been on in awhile due to our crazy pup Fezziwig who if you look up old posts was Very Much a handful. Since we got him he would destroy everything. And if you think I'm kidding think of the worst scene in a movie where the dog destroys a room and thats what we would find. We must have lost 4 pairs of glasses, cellphones, 2 chairs a table everything you could imagine. He would leap, bite, grab, claw, chew. And we tried everything. I am not the kind of person to take a pup into my home and give up on him because he's a terror (which I can say in total honesty) and give him away.

So as stated in the old posts we tried everything, he went to obedience school and passed but that only helped for a few weeks, we tried crating, that didnt help anything for more than a few weeks, we tried training books, collars, leads, anything we'd ever heard of to try to get him to behave and he would not. He got to the point where it was just dangerous, he knew the commands but refused to do them. We had a runaway incident where he went after a deer and we couldnt do anything to stop him he ran to the road etc.

We were at our end and my family after everything with him not being able to be trusted and destroying everything gave me 2 weeks to make him a good dog or he had to go. I couldn't handle that.

Now I have never been one who thought these were ever a good idea and never even liked the thought of them being used but it was my last alternative. (I feel guilty even saying it) I ordered a shock training collar. I put it on him, watched the video and set it to the lowest setting.

We only used it during very bad behaviors and I felt terrible doing it but I swear to you that within 2 weeks with barely any shocks my pup (1yr) became a new dog. He has never had to use it again and is an angel (Knock on wood). He can now be with us all the time. He hasn't done any damage, he comes out with us wherever we go, obeys all his commands and can run around without a leash and return to us immediatly when called. And now since things have been good and he has more freedom and we are happier with him he seems genuinely happy too.

So the moral of my story although i had to use something I would have never wanted to, it worked, and our pup who was deemed uncontrollable by almost all who met him is now a wonderful companion who is no longer a danger to himself or anyone else. So to anyone who has a dog who has tried everything else and is close to giving up I say this...
There is hope! It may be a method you least wanted to use but it worked for us. And if Fezziwig is now a well behaved boy it is possible for anyone!

I'm so proud of you for sticking with your pup. I've heard so many stories of people giving up. Little do they know the rewards in store for those of us who stick with it! Congratulations!
We often do have to go to the last resort in life, and often that is the choice that eventually wins out, as it seems to have with your dog. I'm glad things have worked out and that he can now be a happy, welcome member of your family. :)
I'm glad you stuck it out with him! :) I bet he is too!
What a wonderful story! I was very sad reading it at first, then I got more sad as you came to the breaking point, and then....Happiness! Like a good movie!

Thank you sooo much for coming back and sharing your experience with us. While I don't know if your technique will work for everybody, maybe it will give some another option.

Yay!
It's great story... Your love for your doggie has come a long way, hope you enjoy each other for a long time.

Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad so many people saw the story so far. There were several points where I thought it was hopeless and I hesitated putting the post up due to the method we had to resort to. But if it can be used as a last resort and works for someone and can stop one more dog from being sent to a shelter or worse then I had to post it.

I am very glad that people understood and so many others were willing to stick it out with their dogs when many other people would have given up. We now are one big happy family and he can enjoy being with us as much as we can enjoy having him as part of the family.

Just an example of the good change. Where we are located we have just recieved anywhere from 6-8 inches of snow. Now that he is behaving and can be trusted he spent the majority of the day running crazily through the snow, rolling around and of course gobbling down mouthfuls of it, while we shoveled and cleaned off cars. It's soo nice to be able to have him run free. We have alot of land and now he can enjoy it. I am so greatful things turned out this way.
What a wonderful story! I really like the happy ending. I'm learning with our sheepie that he is just like our kids. Sometimes what you HAVE to do is hard, but in the end it's all worth it!

By the way, where are you in New York state?
lol Everyone seems to come to that same conclusion. Our lil sheepie's are like very furry lil children. Mine would def have been a trouble maker in school up until recently. But happily he would be a good lil boy now

While I am a total believer in positive reinforcement training, when it doesn't work it doesn't work. You have to try everything. Sometimes a bit of stick rather than carrot does work as you discovered. I know it was rough for you but imagine how rough it would have been for poor Fez not to mention you if you had to give him up.

Congratulations on your success with Fez. Don't feel guilty. Thanks for sharing your success with us.
Hi,

I loved hearing a success story and glad you didn't give up on your boy. While it's true,

that preferably other avenues are better to use , sometimes tough love or in this case that collar was a last resort. Don't feel quilty as obviously you love your boy to have exhausted and tried everything else previously. Thanks for your post and you should take pride in that you never gave up.
