Need advice on infection

Hi

maggie was fixed on Wednesday and now has an infection - the vet put her on penecillian - has anyone ever been through this and if so, how long before I should see the infection clearing up once the penecillian has been started??? she started it yesterday and by this morning she had 2 doses but her incision area looks worse today instead of better - any advise or lessons learned would be appreciated.

I would think it may take some time for it to start working, usually anywhere betwen 12 to 36 hours. Just keep an eye on her, and if she is eating and drinking etc ok, then give the meds a little more time to work. If it still does not seem better and you are concerned then maybe ask the vet for a different antibiotic, or perhaps an antiinflammatory. :)
Maggie is eating and drinking now and actually chased the cat this morning for the first time all week - lol so other than the way it looks she seems to be moving a little better (when she wants too that is) I have her in a romper since she managed to get the collar off and I dont have the heart to put it on her again it really scares her and she freaks out. So will keep an eye on it and hopefully within the next few days she will be back to our happy baby.
Does anyone remember where to get the "collar" to use instead of an E-collar? It slipps over the neck and keeps it from bending, thus eliminating the need for that spooky E-collar.

If we can find it, this might be better for your girl.

I find antibiotics take at least 24 hours before I see improvement, often 3 days. As ususal, encourage a little extra liquid in her diet, very dilute broth should do it. but if she's chasing the cat, she feels better already
thanks for the tip I will look around and see if I can find anything like that - the romper seems to be working but is a pain because I have to take it off everytime I take her out to pee - I just checked the incision again and it has been 7 hours since her 3 rd dose and it is looking better than this morning and of course I felt so bad for her I went to the store and bought her every new toy I could find - lol she just had Christmas in February! I think she is finally on the mend.
What a good Mommie you are! MO wants to know why she gets only 1 new toy a year.......does she have to have surgery for more?

You are taking the romper off to pee.......hmmm, isn't there some way to secure it on her so it's just high enough to keep from getting wet? Maybe not. I've done the rompers more with Great Pyrs which have a longer body than our cobbie sheepies.

Glad she's feeling better.
Hi,

Poor Maggie! I was concerned the other day when you mentioned she was vomiting which may have been the case of infection. Although some dogs or people do this often after sedation. Merlin too had an infection as a result of his wound to his side last Sat. Luckily the vet gave me a dose of antibiotics as a precaution as I too noticed some swelling and redness in the area where he was stapled. It decreased in two days.

I hope Maggie is on the mend and will recover fully before the week is out.
Belly rubs from me and sloppy kisses from the boys.

Glad Maggie is better. Sometimes I wonder if sheepies are so smart they act sicker than they feel. What could be wrong with more treats and lots of attention?
Funny that you should say that because my husband is convinced that Maggie is sucking this up for all it is worth! (cant blame her!)
Our first OES was Flash. He got in a fight with a porcipine(SP?) and lost. Needless to say his mouth was full of quills. We happened to be at our cottage so we took him to a local vet who fixed him right up and told us he would be fine when the meds wore off. Well, this boy acted like he had some major surgery done. We had to carry him into the house and for a week he acted like a baby . 8O We hand fed him and had to actually hold his water dish under his mouth so he would drink. We called the vet and he laughed and told us to make him get up and feed himself. As soon as we quit babying him he was fine and even managed to go out without someone to carry him.
