What have they done to his coat?????

On Friday I dropped George off at the normal groomers to have his usual cut. He has been there a number of times and has always looked great. Before he went there I went to talk to them about cutting and grooming an OES, and I saw some of the other sheepies they had groomed. The salon was nice the staff were good with the dogs, and it has been a good choice.

When I dropped him off I was very specific on how I wanted him (as I always am).

I had spent most of the previous Sunday line grooming George and throughout the week I had made sure he was brushed throughly. There is long grass where we walk so he gets grass seeds in his coat so I was make sure they are all out as they irritate him. He has got a really soft coat and other than a few matts on his legs his coats stays pretty matt free.

When I picked George up (6 hours after leaving him there) I was shocked at how short he was. The groomer said he was matted so we had to cut him short.
I said I didn't see how he could be as he had been line groomed but she insisted he was. However George is always crazy when I collect him as hes is pleased to see me, and wants to go home so it was difficult to see how he was cut.

When I got home I had a good look at him and I was so shocked at the state of his coat.

His coat is about 1inch all over (he is normally cut to about 3inches)
His head has long bits and short bits and is a funny shape.
His ear has a a square chunk missing out of it (hair not skin)
His chest is uneven, one side is short and one is long and it is stepped
His tummy is shaved to the skin and he had razor rash which I've had to treat with cream over the weekend.
His paws are cut in a funny way that makes them look too small for his legs.

His legs are the right length which looks funny with his small feet and shaved body.

I phoned the groomer to say I was unhappy with the way George had been cut and I said they had ruined his coat. I asked why they cut him the way they had and she insisted that he was matted. I said we both knew that was a lie, and even if he was (which I know he was not) the way he was cut was unacceptable. I asked why they hadn't contacted me prior to shaving him down to which she said we didn't have the time.

She said "we are the professsionals and we make a decision based on what is best for the dog." I said there were no matts you know it and I know it. She didn't say anything.

I ended up crying on the phone saying they had ruined my dogs coat. I think at this stage they thought I was a crazy!

He is a complete mess. They have said I can take him back to be tidied up but all they can do is cut him even shorter which I really don't want.

I have said I want the owner of the groomers to contact me, which she is yet to do.

They have always cut him well in the past so I am dissapointed that they have hacked him up in this way.

I suppose there is nothing to do except wait for it to grow, and find an alternative groomer, or learn to do it myself!

Oh and to top it all someone asked me on Saturday if he was a labradoodle!

how sad this is. They know very well what they did.
I would keep trying to contact the owner.

question" the person who did this to your oes, was she knew?
had she done the dog before.

if new she needs help.
if not new, bad word of mouth is not good for them and
let the owner know it.

see what they say first.
Oh I don't think I have ever taken the dogs to the groomers and been 100% happy with the results, now I do it myself, and am never 100% happy with the results  THe good news is, its hair and it will grow back.
Mr. J and I were just talking about "me" and how I feel after our dogs have been to the groomers, and basically said what kerry did ...that I'm never happy and usually have something I'm upset about.

BUT, I'd be totally pissed if they flat out ignored my wishes when I knew they weren't matted. I don't like my dogs real short, and it takes a lot of time for them to grow their hair out (at least yuki...her hair never grows)!

This followed by Mr. J saying I tend to lose it, but of course I argued that I've been an angel ( ) to people who give me crappy service esp after our last time at the groomers (basically the same thing happened, said our dog was soooooo matted, and I've had her matted before and KNEW she only had a matt on her chest before she came).

No apparently it was the girl who has always done him

I'm not so sure, and I don't know if I will find out.

I will speak to the owner of the salon tomorrow.
If George was badly matted then surely they would have taken him down to the skin?

Even if he was matted? what stops them cutting to the same 3", matts and all?

Sounds like they may have mixed up George with another OES?

And covering up!

You know your dog, and the simple fact he was line groomed prior to the grooming, I think you would have spotted matts the flaming things are hard to miss
Oh NO this is awful, you must feel terrible  :ghug:

I would DEMAND a refund, a truthful explanation and an apology when you speak to the owner on the phone. If they don't agree then I would threaten to go there in person and shout about it in front of all their customers & staff. If things get really bad, mention your uncle works for the local newspaper.
Firstly you need to go round and talk to the owner about this, nthing is going to change the way your dog is looking but they must not be allowed to do this. If i have to clip short then I always question the owner before and get them to sign a disclaimer because I don't want this kind of thing to happen with my clients.

Its a shame your not nearer to me as I owuld have helped. what you should be able to dmeand is that they put your dog right and ensure he's the same length in the right places without them taking the hairany shorter!

They shoud have a policy in place that owners are contacted before hand, why was this not pointed out to you before you left the dog? If he was that badly matted they would have known before you let, I always run my hands over the dogs before the owners leave some times it hard depends on the coat really but you get a really good idea.

Don't be afraid to ask any new groomer how many of your breed she grooms, if need be ask when that dog is coming in so you can have a look at her work before.

I do feel for you, I have had at least 10 clients i the last year come to me in tears where other groomers had not done what has been asked and I then try to get the dog looking like it should.

And most of all this gives groomers a real bad name, but there are a lot out there that can deliver what you want.
The fact that they took him down so short without your consent is poor business. Saying that they didn't have the time to contact you and that they are the professionals and not you, is absolutely inexcusable.

I can appreciate them using the excuse that they were doing what was best for the dog, but if the dog was already matt free, then there is no argument. To me, it seems as though the groomer did not want to take the time necessary to groom an OES. The groomer probably wanted to groom more dogs in the time it takes to properly groom your dog, so that she/he could make more money from more clients.

I had a hack job done on Asterisk before, and I was just mortified. They didn't even her out, they spot shaved her and then had the entire grooming salon say that she looked just adorable. They all had eyes to tell that it wasn't honest.

I would tell you to learn to groom George yourself. That is what I am doing with my two. It's more cost effective and also, you can make sure this doesn't happen again.
:( :( :(
I think the comment they didnt have time probably sums it up! But what they should have said was they didnt have time to do a good job!!!
Have you heard back yet Vicki ?

Sometimes when they say "its best for the dog" I tanslate as, you can't be othered to take the time and effort.

Hope you get a call back with a sincere apology.

If you fancy an 8 hour drive down, my groomer is just lovely xx
I have spoken to the owner this afternoon.

She is not happy that I am unhappy with the state George was left in.

In short she agreed with everything that I said and apologised for what has happened.

She said if I take him back on Saturday she will scissor him to even him up, however I have declined the offer as I don't want to take him back again so soon. (its not his favourite thing to do) and I really don't want to cut any more off him.

She has asked that I take him back for his next groom/cut so that she can put right the mistakes made this time.

Because she has done him in the past and has made a great job I will take him back but I have said I don't want anyone to do him in the future but her.....

heres hoping.
Well at least they have agreed with you - will you stay with George next time, just to keep an eye on him - I would ?
